Qatar National Broadband Network Selects Ericsson

Qatar National Broadband Network Company (Qnbn) has selected Ericsson to deploy a broadband network infrastructure using optical fiber (FTTx) in Qatar. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The network, which is set to begin rolling out immediately, will use Ericsson’s Fiber Optic Solution, Fiber Cables and Central offices. Qnbn will deploy a passive network infrastructure, providing equal and open access to operators to offer choice for the end-user and efficiently leveraging existing and new infrastructure in Qatar.

“Qnbn represents a bold step forward in Qatar’s drive to be a leading knowledge based economy and continuous access to a high-speed network is essential for economic development and innovation,” said Mohamad Al-Mannai, Qnbn’s Chief Executive Officer. “Together with Ericsson we hope to be able to enrich connectivity in Qatar and continue to provide an ideal environment for business development and economic growth.”

• Earlier this year, Qatar National Broadband Network Company (Q.NBN) received a 25 year license to provide fiber optic broadband throughout the Gulf country.  The license will see Q.NBN offering wholesale broadband fiber optics infrastructure services to licensed network service providers and operators. As such, Q,NBN serve as the fiber optic broadband infrastructure provider.

Global Broadband Surpasses 624 Million Lines, FTTx Grows Fastest

Global broadband subscriptions have surpassed 624 million, according to the latest figures released by the Broadband Forum and prepared by broadband industry analysts Point Topic.

Point Topic reports strong 12-month growth rates for FTTx (27%) and FTTH (23.4%) and for the first time the market share for DSL fell below 60%.

Some other highlights:

• IPTV services have brought more than 69 million new set-top boxes into Connected Homes.
• IPTV added 15.9 million subscribers over the past year, including 3.57 million over the last quarter.
• China, France and the U.S. continue to lead in terms of IPTV adoption.  Russia is also seeing faster IPTV adoption.

Infonetics: Mobile momentum drives DPI market to 34% CAGR through 2016

Driven by the increased use of DPI in wireless networks, the service provider deep packet inspection (DPI) market will grow at a 34% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2011 to 2016, according to a new report from Infonetics.

Traffic management is still the primary use case for DPI technology, but we’re seeing a growing interest in folding DPI into larger solutions, such as video optimization, content caching, and usage-based billing,” notes Shira Levine, directing analyst for service enablement and subscriber intelligence at Infonetics Research. “This ‘DPI inside’ approach provides operators with the visibility into network traffic needed to enable new service models and pricing plans and to support new architectures like software-defined networks (SDNs).”

Some other key points:

• DPI product revenue is on track to pass the $600-million mark this year
  
• Mobile operators are deploying DPI hand-in-hand with LTE for more granular traffic management and to enable value-added services, tiered services, and sophisticated pricing models
  
• Infonetics expects operators to push DPI deeper into the access network and eventually to the device level via enforcement agents that enable greater network and service control on smartphones, tablets, and set-top boxes

Broadband Forum and UNH-IOL Launch TR-069 Certification

The Broadband Forum has launched its BBF.069 CPE Certification Program and announced the first certified devices. The certification program verifies if devices are TR-069 compliant.

TR-069, also known as CPE WAN Management Protocol, is the remote management standard used around the world to provision and manage the Connected Home.  The standard is widely used for remote management of broadband customer premise equipment (CPE).

The University of New Hampshire-InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) is the official testing lab for the program.

The first BBF.069 certifications,have been issued to Broadcom, Cisco, D-Link, Huawei and Lantiq.

"This is a real celebration as the BBF.069 CPE Certification Program launches, signifying another step forward in supporting innovation within the broadband ecosystem," said Robin Mersh , CEO of the Broadband Forum. "Device conformance is critical in enabling interoperability and provides the key to expediting the exciting growth and potential of connected home services around the world."

Marvell Cuts Q3 Guidance, CFO Steps Down

Marvell cut its financial outlook for the third quarter of fiscal 2013, ending October 27, 2012, saying it now expects net revenue to be in the range of $765 million to $785 million, compared with prior outlook of between $800 million to $850 million.

“The continued slowdown in the global economy during the third quarter is resulting in a weaker PC market than previously anticipated and thus lower demand from our storage HDD customers. Our SSD, networking, and mobile product revenues are tracking to be in line with prior expectations,” said Dr. Sehat Sutardja, Marvell’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “In addition to the continued weak PC demand patterns, visibility in our other end markets remains low as we head into a seasonally softer fourth quarter.”

Marvell also announced the resignation of its chief financial officer (CFO), Clyde Hosein, who is leaving after four years in the job.  Brad Feller, vice president and corporate controller, will serve as interim chief financial officer during a search for Mr. Hosein’s replacement.

Brocade Appoints David Meyer as Chief Scientist

Brocade has appointed David Meyer to the position of Service Provider business chief technology officer and chief scientist.

Meyer is known for his work on software-defined networking (SDN), Internet routing and OpenFlow technologies. Most recently, Meyer  was a Distinguished Engineer at Cisco focused on examining the growing role of OpenFlow and SDN within the enterprise and service provider markets.

In his new role, Meyer will play an integral role in the shaping of Brocade's cloud networking, advanced routing and application delivery strategy.  He will report to Ken Cheng, vice president and general manager of the Routing, Application Delivery and Software Networking Group.

"The networking industry is undergoing an evolutionary period unlike any we've recently seen. The companies that are going to emerge victorious are those with the right combination of networking expertise, technology vision and business smarts," said David Meyer, Service Provider business CTO and chief scientist at Brocade.
