Vitesse Posts Revenue of $44 Million, up 5% Sequentially

Vitesse Semiconductor reported second quarter 2010 (ended 03-Mar-2010)revenues of $43.9 million, compared with $34.6 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2009. Operating income was $3.0 million, compared with an operating loss of $6.4 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2009. There was a net loss of $34.1 million, compared with a net loss of $7.1 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2009, including a $30.4 million non-cash embedded derivative expense.


"We are very pleased that we returned to solid operating profitability on growing revenues and continued tight expense control. Second quarter revenue was up over 5.4% compared to the first quarter, reflecting continued improvement in the global economy and strength in our markets," said Chris Gardner, CEO of Vitesse.

1Goal Launches Biggest Mobile Campaign to Date - 1 Billion Text Messages

1GOAL:Education for All, the FIFA-backed legacy project for the 2010 World Cup, launched what is expected to be the biggest mobile phone campaign to date. Mobile operators from across the globe will send over 1 billion text messages going out to people in the coming weeks on behalf of 1GOAL with the aim of getting millions of people to support the cause of more education funding in both developing and developed countries.


The Telefónica Group -- representing some 25 countries and 274 million people -- has just joined up to support the campaign. Across its territories Telefónica will be promoting the "education for all" message as part of its long-standing objective to make a positive impact on economic, technological and social progress.


People will be able to sign up by responding ‘YES' to a simple free text or by going to 1goal.mobi on their handsets or by sending an e-mail to info@join1goal.org. Signups from the 1GOAL mobile campaign will be presented as a petition to world leaders at an education summit later this year urging both developing and developed countries to provide further funding for education. Handset manufacturers Nokia and Samsung will also be making available a 1GOAL mobile app for their customers.

Qwest Expands Ethernet Portfolio

Qwest Communications launched new 3-, 5- and 7 Mbps Ethernet bandwidth tiers for its business customers. The new tiers provide simplified integration of LANs across multiple locations and access to other networks with minimal investment in new equipment or expertise. Using virtual LANs, Qwest can connect multiple customer sites and maintain complete traffic separation and security for customers. The services also can be used for last-mile connectivity. Qwest said upgrading the new services typically can be done in as few as four business days after order acceptance.

AT&T Creates Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions Group

AT&T has formed a new group within its Business Solutions unit to accelerate the delivery of advanced mobile applications and solutions for traditional and emerging devices for enterprise users.


The group - to be called Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions - will complement AT&T's Emerging Devices Organization which focuses on devices that are wirelessly enabled for consumers. The unit will work with developers and third-party providers to help co-innovate and deliver applications in a network and cloud-based environment that easily allows them to extend new services down to any desired device.


Michael Antieri has been named President of the Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions unit and assumes responsibility for the development, sales and deployment of mobile applications and solutions for enterprises.

Ceragon Supplies Wireless Infrastructure in Queensland, Australia

Ergon Energy Corporation Limited, an electricity distribution company in Queensland, Australia, is deploying Ceragon's FibeAir in a high-capacity microwave/fiber hybrid network spanning large parts of Queensland. Ergon Energy's new telecommunications network is based on a hybrid fiber/microwave architecture and supports a mix of SDH and IP data traffic. Ceragon's platforms, including FibeAir 3200T all-indoor solution, the FibeAir 1500R and FibeAir IP-10, will help Ergon Energy enhance the capacity and functionality of the wireless portion of its network. Equipment orders for the first two phases of the project are valued at more than $1 million in revenue.

AT&T Offer Network-based E-mail Gateway Service

AT&T introduced a network-based Secure E-mail Gateway Service. The new "Security as a Service" (SaaS) solution provides e-mail security and message management by ensuring the integrity of a message before it enters an organization's network and helping to monitor and act on all outbound e-mail containing content that violates data loss prevention policies.

AT&T is using McAfee's global threat intelligence technology for the service. The service is implemented, managed and hosted within the highly secure boundaries of AT&T's Internet Data Centers worldwide. This new service replaces previous AT&T's Secure E-mail Gateway solution, and AT&T will be working with its customers to migrate to this new platforms. Customers manage and administer the service through the AT&T BusinessDirect customer portal.

AT&T's other managed cloud-based security services include virtualized firewall, intrusion detection and prevention, URL filtering, content filtering, and Distributed Denial of Service protection.

Tyco Electronics Acquires Zarlink's Optical Group

Tyco Electronics has acquired the assets of Zarlink Semiconductor's Optical Products for approximately US$15 million in cash.


Tyco Electronics, which is based in Switzerland, had fiscal 2009 sales of US$10.3 billion.
Zarlink said the sales allows it to focused on its key growth initiatives in the network timing, medical wireless and line circuit markets. Network timing products include Timing-over-Packet and Synchronous Ethernet solutions for wireless backhaul and new ClockCenter products for optical transport networks (OTN).

Sonus New Network Border Switch Integrates Transcoding and Media Interworking

Sonus Networks released its new NBS-5200 Network Border Switch -- the first product on its next generation ConnexIP platform. The NBS-5200 switch provides Session Border Control (SBC) functionality with integrated transcoding and media interworking, as well as native support for IPv6 and IPSec encryption. The platform is powered by network processors, multi-core computing devices, solid-state storage, high density media processing cards, and Sonus' middleware and protocol stacks.

"Today marks an important milestone for Sonus as we deliver ConnexIP - a platform for creating new products and solutions that lead the industry in scale, performance and reliability for IP to IP session management," said Rich Nottenburg, president and chief executive officer of Sonus Networks.

Sonus said the key to its new strategy is to combine full SBC functionality including media interworking, advanced routing and policy engine, and multi-access security gateway functionality. The first carrier trials are underway.

Telefónica Brazil Outsources NOC with Ericsson

Telefónica Brazil will outsource its network operations center in São Paulo to Ericsson. This contract extends the managed services cooperation between Ericsson and Telefónica Brazil which was established in 2008, when Ericsson was selected to operate and maintain a new multivendor optical fiber network in São Paulo state. Ericsson will also be responsible for spare parts management. Financial terms were not disclosed.
