Telenor Builds Digital Store with Alcatel-Lucent for Personalized Digital Content

Telenor is building its own stores for delivering personalized digital content for its subscribers. The carrier is using Alcatel-Lucent’s Digital Media Store (DMS) for providing cloud-based access to music, applications, games, e-books and video. The first such Telenor service to launch is in Serbia .



Because DMS is cloud-based, Telenor can quickly launch storefronts without deploying local operating platforms, and with minimal adjustments can expand the service to other countries. This enables Telenor to rapidly launch advanced multi-content services in its business units at a lower cost, and provides them with flexibility in content partnerships as it becomes easy to extend content distribution agreements to new markets.

Canada's Xplornet Raises $125 Million for its 4G Network

Xplornet Communications announced $125 million in private financing to accelerate the deployment of its national 4G network.



Xplornet is pursuing a rural broadband strategy using satellites and other means. The company has acquired 100% of the Canadian capacity on two new 4G satellites - ViaSat-1 launched in October and EchoStar XVII (formerly Jupiter) to be launched this summer.



John Maduri, Xplornet's Chief Executive Officer commented that: "Xplornet is solving the broadband access divide in rural Canada, and doing so largely with private capital. This new $125 million in financing, following on the $230 million we raised last year, will help ensure that Xplornet has the resources necessary to continue our aggressive growth, and position us for continued success as one of Canada's leading telecommunications companies."

Tata Comm Tightens Latency Specs on Global Network with PBB

Tata Communications annnounced a low latency network service connecting major financial capitals in Asia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The network delivers a pure multipoint Ethernet platform to the financial services sector and other global industries, accelerating global high frequency trading and other low latency applications.


Whereas low latency networks have traditionally been offered over MPLS or relatively expensive layer 1 technologies, Tata Communications is using multipoint Ethernet backed by 802.1ah, Provider Backbone Bridging (PBB) technology. The carrier said this enables it to offer up to 35 per cent savings on circuit and operations costs.


Service level agreements (SLAs) for the low latency network include near-real-time latency guarantees. Latency is measured every five minutes on a 24/7 basis, up to two decimals after the millisecond range from PoP to PoP. All data is stored for trend analysis.

ADTRAN Intros Bring Your Own Device Network Suite

ADTRAN announced a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Network Suite that addresses four key issues for businesses:


1. Highly scalable wireless LAN (WLAN): BYOD will result in a 2x-3x increase in mobile devices that are competing for scarce wireless bandwidth, resulting in a crippling information bottleneck in the organization. Traditional hardware controller-based WLANs are unable to handle the flood of mobile devices, and are prohibitively expensive to upgrade and maintain. Metaswitch Names Board Chairman John Lazar as CEO

John Lazar will return to his role as CEO of Metaswitch Networks, replacing Kevin DeNuccio who will continue to assess strategic initiatives that can complement Metaswitch's core business plan and product portfolio. Both executives will remain on the Board of Directors.



John Lazar was a key member of the founding team that established the company's carrier division in North America in 2000. Prior to joining Metaswitch, he graduated from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar, with a Master's degree in computer science and a doctorate in history. John was previously CEO of Metaswitch through February 2010, and subsequently Chairman of the Metaswitch Board.

Lantiq and Qualcomm Atheros Enter Home Gateway Collaboration

Lantiq is collaborating with Qualcomm Atheros to produce an advanced broadband home gateway reference design that integrates the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9880 3x3 802.11ac solution and the Lantiq XWAY ARX300 or VRX288 universal gateway chipsets.


The companies are providing a complete software and hardware reference design featuring the newest evolution of 802.11 Wi-Fi and proven DSL broadband gateway functionality. The Lantiq XWAY ARX300 and VRX288 home gateway chipsets support either ADSL or VDSL broadband access.


Qualcomm Atheros’ QCA9880 3-stream 802.11ac chip supports 80 MHz mode and 256 QAM to deliver 1.3 Gbps PHY rates. US Ignite Funds Next Gen Research Networks

The National Science Foundation (NSF) that it will serve as the lead federal agency for a new initiative aimed at sparking a new generation of academic networks and transformative applications.


US Ignite will expand on investments in the NSF-funded Global Environment for Networking Innovation (GENI) project by stitching together high-speed broadband resources to create a testbed across universities and cities throughout the United States. GENI is a fast, programmable "virtual laboratory" that enables university researchers to experiment on so-called future internets.


"We've laid the groundwork for this national testbed by enabling foundational research by more than 300 researchers and 60 universities across the country to develop and prototype GENI," said Farnam Jahanian, assistant director of NSF's Directorate for Computer Information Science and Engineering. "Now, NSF will encourage the next steps for research on GENI. Experiments at-scale will transform cybersecurity, network performance, and cloud computing research, and will jumpstart applications, which have the potential for profound societal and economic impacts."


NSF is funding four new projects:


The University of Massachusetts Amherst is connecting radars to ultra-high-speed networks to improve weather prediction--an application to help mitigate the impacts of natural disasters.


The University of Missouri Columbia is exploring the potential for early detection of health changes with research on unobtrusive monitoring of individuals with in-home sensors--possibly extending independent living for seniors.


Case Western Reserve University is developing high-definition, multipoint videoconferencing and realizing its potential to improve healthcare delivery--enabling, for instance, seniors to consult clinicians for diagnosis and treatment, without leaving their homes.


The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga is working on a disaster response system that provides emergency staff with training and planning, as well as real-time guidance on effective strategies to protect first responders and the general public--greatly improving public safety.


The NSF is soliciting further proposals for the development of novel applications that take advantage of advanced networks developed through GENI and have societal impact.


The NSF is also sponsoring the Mozilla Foundation to host an open innovation challenge, called Mozilla Ignite. This challenge will invite designers, developers, university researchers, entrepreneurs and other visionaries across America to brainstorm and build next-generation applications in areas of national priority that take advantage of advanced networks.

Cisco Open Network Environment Promises Deep Programmability

Cisco outlined its vision for the Open Network Environment (ONE), promising multilayered "full-duplex" programmability across network hardware platforms and its operating systems based on application dynamics. The goal is to enable flexible, application-driven customization of network infrastructures through a rich set of platform APIs, agents and controllers, and overlay network technologies.



"The Cisco Open Network Environment is key to our vision of an intelligent network that is more open, programmable, and application-aware— a vision in which the network is transformed into a more effective business enabler," said Padmasree Warrior, Cisco chief technical officer, senior vice president of Engineering, and general manager of Enterprise Business. "With Cisco's Open Network Environment, customers get a comprehensive and robust set of capabilities to address emerging enterprise and service provider requirements to harness network intelligence and provide value for new business platforms in an evolutionary manner."



The ONE framework consists of three fundamental technology components: Platform Interfaces, Agents and Controllers , and Virtual Overlays. Initial deliverables of the Cisco Open Network Environment include:

  • a developer kit with platform APIs across Cisco IOS, IOS-XR, and NX-OS Software


  • Proof-of-concept controllers and SDN/OpenFlow agents allowing academic research partners to universities to partition or "slice" their campus network to enable academic research on SDN with consistent policy management.


  • Overlay network solutions that include the Cisco Nexus 1000V for scalable, multitenant cloud deployments.


Cisco said its open programmability architecture complements current approaches to software-defined networking while encompassing the entire solution stack from transport to management and orchestration. The new virtual overlay networks capability for multi-tenant cloud deployments with the Cisco Nexus 1000V virtual switch will feature OpenStack support, programmability, multi-hypervisor capability, and VXLAN gateway functionality. The company will also provide proof-of-concept OpenFlow v1.0 agents on the Cisco Catalyst 3750-X and 3560-X Series Switches.

Brazil Auctions 450 MHz and 2.5 GHz Spectrum

Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) attracted first round auction bids valued at US$2.72 billion from six groups for 2.5 GHz frequency bands (intended for 4G) and 450 MHz (dedicated to improving coverage in rural areas).



Auction participants include Light / Americel, Tim / Intelig Hi, Live, Sunrise and Sky presented the proposed price and identity documents and licenses.

Sprint Deploys Ciena 6500 for Network Vision

Sprint is upgrading its optical backbone network with Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, which converges Ethernet, TDM, and WDM capabilities. Financial terms were not disclosed.



The updated network, powered exclusively by Ciena, will enable Sprint to enhance transport network scalability, cost and performance. It will support core network speeds of 40G and 100G today with the ability to scale to 400G and beyond in the future. Ciena sais the 6500 Packet Optical Platform with its WaveLogic coherent technology provides the ability to add 100G wavelengths, 400G wavelengths and beyond – without the need for a major network redesign. Additionally, the 6500 supports multiple chassis sizes.



Sprint and Ciena are planning a 400G field trial for early 2013.



Ciena has been a strategic supplier to Sprint since 1998. This upgrade builds on Sprint’s existing deployments of Ciena’s CoreStream Agility Optical Transport Systems. Sprint is also using Ciena’s OneControl Unified Management System for centralized network management, and Ciena Specialist Services to help minimize implementation costs and ensure that the network is turned up efficiently and effectively.
