Singtel Launches 450 Mbps Mobile Data Speeds

Singtel launched 450 Mbps 4G LTE-Advanced service in its home market of Singapore.

The 450Mbps service is available to all Singtel 4G customers at no additional charge. The first device to support the speed are the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.  LG V20 users will also be able to harness the higher speeds with a soon-to-be released software update. More compatible smartphone models are expected to be launched by early 2017.

“Singtel is investing ahead to deliver faster speeds and wider connections with the steady deployment of innovative technologies on our live network. With more customers consuming and sharing mobile videos, 450Mbps speeds will enable them to download movies in a flash and give them a better entertainment experience while on the go,” stated Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, Chief Executive Officer, Consumer Singapore, Singtel.

The boost is made possible by Singtel’s nationwide LTE network upgrade to support 256 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, or 256 QAM, which increases the number of unique radio waveform shapes to carry up to 33.33% higher data and elevates spectral efficiency.

Separately, Singtel and Ericsson have demonstrated download speeds of up to 1Gbps in a live 4G network pilot at two sites in Pasir Ris. This was achieved by deploying 256 QAM downlink, 4x4 Multiple Input Multiple Output (4x4 MIMO) and triple carrier aggregation technologies. 4x4 MIMO doubles the number of data paths between a cellular base station and mobile phones, delivering a speed boost of up to two times normal speeds.

Singtel said it plans to progressively rollout 4x4 MIMO technology on its network starting next year to deliver up to 1Gbps speeds at selected high-traffic locations. Supporting mobile devices are expected to be ready by end 2017.

Aquantia Supplies Silicon for Dell EMC Open Networking Switch

Dell EMC Networking is using Aquantia's multi-Gig AQrate PHY products for its new N-Series family of Open Networking campus switches.

Aquantia said its AQrate silicon delivers up to 5 Gbps throughput over 100m of Cat5e/Cat6 cables. Aquantia and major industry players co-founded the NBASE-T Alliance to further develop and promote the technology. In September 2016, this multi-Gig technology was formally approved as the IEEE 802.3bz standard. Aquantia's AQrate product line - with single, dual and quad-port configurations - is the only PHY technology in mass production today enabling network scaling to both 5 and 2.5GbE on Cat5e and Cat6 cabling infrastructure.

"Digital transformation and the increasing reliance on wireless networks creates a real need for next-generation network infrastructure," said Jeffrey Baher, senior director, Product and Technical Marketing, Dell Networking. "Working with Aquantia, our goal is to help customers future proof investments by implementing higher-speed 2.5 and 5G multi-gig switch solutions with greater capabilities and confidence."

"Aquantia is honored to have the opportunity to work with Dell EMC and its new N-Series family of Open Networking campus switches," said Faraj Aalaei, Chairman and CEO of Aquantia. "By combining our AQrate technology with Dell EMC's Open Networking systems, we can help unlock unmatched choice and capability when it comes to end-user and campus networks. This design win is another example of Aquantia's traction in the rapidly expanding enterprise market, which further solidifies our position as a leading supplier of high-speed Ethernet connectivity solutions."

Panzura Lands $32 Million for Hybrid Cloud Storage

Panzura, a start-up based in Campbell, California, raised $32 million in new venture funding for its hybrid cloud storage solutions.

Panzura said its hybrid cloud storage software seamlessly combines the economics, capacity, and business model of cloud storage with the flexibility, performance and features of enterprise storage. The company is adding multiple petabytes of new enterprise storage per month. Panzura added over 26 new petabytes of enterprise storage in 2016 and its hybrid cloud NAS, archive and collaboration storage products were deployed in over 33 countries across multiple industries and governments.

The new funding round led by Matrix Partners and joined by Meritech Capital Partners, Opus Capital, Chevron and Western Digital as well as an undisclosed strategic investor.

“The on premises storage model is outdated, expensive and collapsing under its own weight,” said Patrick Harr, CEO of Panzura. “With a cloud-first model and Panzura, customers can modernize their storage architectures, significantly reduce their costs and scale on demand without the overhead and capital required before. We are excited about the new round as it enables us to expand our reach to new customers and markets that will benefit from the significant shift from the dying, on premise storage model to hybrid cloud storage.”

Aptilo Powers Wi-Fi in the London Underground

Aptilo Networks confirmed that its Wi-Fi service management solutions are being used by 3UK to serve some 500K subscribers with Wi-Fi in the London Underground.

3UK, which had no Wi-Fi capabilities prior to the launch in 2014, built its Wi-Fi service from the ground-up using the Aptilo Managed Service through an existing Wi-Fi access network deployed across the London Underground by Virgin Media. Mobile users in the Underground stations are able to register for service using a customized web portal integrated with 3UK's my3 customer care portal. Once registered, the Aptilo Wi-Fi service management solution remembers users and provides returning users with a seamless, automatic login.

The operator is using a high-capacity Wi-Fi network to bridge the gap between 3UK's leading 4G network and metro stations where mobile coverage can be difficult to obtain.

"For 3UK this is a clear win-win; they reduce costs by deploying through a third-party network and are able to provide a Wi-Fi service which is fully integrated with existing mobile data services," said Frédéric Servat, Regional Account Director, EMEA, Aptilo Networks.
