IDC: Worldwide Industry Cloud revenue to reach $6.1 billion in 2018

Five large industry groups, including healthcare, public sector, finance, retail/wholesale, and manufacturing, are expected to spend a total of $37.5 billion on industry cloud solutions in 2018, according to the Worldwide Semiannual Industry Cloud Tracker from International Data Corporation (IDC). The report forecasts the overall market to reach $45.4 billion in 2019.

"IDC's latest forecast shows that industry cloud growth rates will continue to accelerate over the next three years, which is very unusual for multi-billion-dollar markets. This growth is being driven by rapidly-digitizing industries like healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing, where industry clouds are becoming the cornerstones for next-generation growth and innovation strategies," said Frank Gens, senior vice president & chief analyst at IDC.

Some highlights:

  • the U.S. will make up close to three-quarters of the overall market in 2018.
  • Japan and China expected to grow the most year over year at 54% and 47% respectively.
  • Other regions will also outperform their 2018 growth rates.
  • The healthcare provider market in the U.S. is expected to pass the $10 billion mark in 2018 for the first time while the Western Europe market for healthcare industry cloud is also forecast to hit a landmark in 2018 by crossing the $1 billion mark.
  • Relative to all other regions, Japan can be considered a late adopter to industry cloud deploymen but will pass the $1 billion mark by 2022.
  • China will pass the $1 billion mark by 2022.

3GPP delays schedule for 2nd wave of 5G specs by 3 months

3GPP will delay by 3 months the "freeze schedule" for the 2nd wave of 5G specifications.

Following a plenary meeting last week in Sorrento, Balazs Bertenyi, Chairman 3GPP TSG RAN writes that 3GPP RAN has "put extreme focus throughtout the course of 2018 on ensuring the stability and compatibility of these specifications (RAN#82) that are to be used for the first 5G deployments. As a consequence, work on components for the ‘late drop’ that address additional architecture options to aid migration from LTE to 5G have been slightly delayed. Hence the freeze schedule for the Release 15 late drop was shifted by 3 months."

The shift is not expected to impact the first 5G deployments.

Molex advances its 10 Gbps Automotive Ethernet Network Platform

Molex introduced the next evolution of its award-winning 10 Gbps Automotive Ethernet Network Platform designed to support OEMs in the development and design of autonomous vehicles.

The Molex HSAutoGig high-speed Ethernet solution is designed for greater vehicle autonomy, delivering 20 Gbps+ data speeds with a reliable interface necessary to seamlessly connect smart-sensor systems and Ethernet network platforms. The high-speed HFM FAKRA Mini Coaxial Cable Solution is designed to perform up to 20 GHz supporting autonomous and connected vehicle technologies.

Molex said it is investing in the connected mobility ecosystem through internal innovation and ongoing and new collaborations with the automotive industry’s best-in-class technology service and solution providers including Accenture, Allgo, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Aquantia, BlackBerry (QNX and Certicom), Broadcom, Cypress, Excelfore, Laird CVS, Microchip, Texas Instruments, and Rosenberger.

Molex’s multi-layered security approach includes enhanced hypervisor capabilities that allows the platform to run multiple virtual machines and applications simultaneously, giving automakers more flexibility, while also providing powerful encryption and certification technology for a more layered and secure network. Safety enhancements include new multi-zone, fail-functional, and redundancy capabilities.

Molex USB Hubs and Media Modules support wired and wireless device-to-vehicle connectivity needs, including USB Type C. The advanced design considers cascading USB hubs via USB and Ethernet to optimize multiple devices connecting from the front to the back of the car.

“In close collaboration with our OEM customers, we translated the need for a safe, secure, reliable and connected vehicle foundation into a high-performance computing network on wheels. By integrating features such as signal integrity, network traffic prioritization, system scalability and security, we have ensured that our solution addresses the demand for more in-vehicle processing power while helping automakers redefine what’s possible for autonomous vehicle technology,” states Dave Atkinson, director of business development, Molex.

Lightwave Logic's 50 Gbaud polymer modulator spans 10km

Lightwave Logic announced a 50 Gbaud polymer modulator designed for fiber links of 10 km or longer.

The 50 Gbaud device is capable of base data rates of 100 Gbps when used with PAM-4 modulation, and of supporting aggregate data rates of 400 Gbps when implemented in an array.

The company its proprietary electro-optic polymers enable optical components with superior speed, stability, low power and cost-efficiency.

Lightwave Logic CEO Michael Lebby said, "While we explore other multi-billion dollar markets the benchmark market opportunity for fiber optic link distances of 10km and greater is worth over $1B over the next decade. As data rates increase, we see a growing technology gap at these longer reaches that our modulators are ideally suited to fill."
