  • On 27-May-2003, Sprint officially launched its migration from a circuit-switched telephone network to a packet network with the replacement of its entire local switching infrastructure in Gardner, Kansas. The process of migrating the entire Sprint network will take place over several years. Sprint will be capable of combining three separate "overlay" networks into a single ATM network for voice, data and private-line services. Class 5 circuit switches will be replaced using Nortel Networks' Succession Communication Server 2000 superclass softswitches, Succession Multiservice Gateway 4000, Succession Media Gateway 9000, and Nortel Networks Passport 15000 Multiservice Switches. Nortel Networks will be responsible for all delivery, installation and testing of the new packet equipment. Financial terms were not disclosed. In addition to Gardner, Kansas, the locations that are scheduled for conversion to packet switching in 2003 include five towns in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Florida and Ohio. Sprint estimates a 75% consolidation of host central offices.

  • In November 2001, Sprint first announced that Nortel Networks would provide products and services for the conversion of Sprint's Local Telecommunications Division network from digital circuit-switched to next generation packet-switching. At the time, the companies valued the project at US$1.1 billion over a projected four year period.

Nortel Networks Introduces New VPN Framework

Nortel Networks introduced a new Virtual Private Network (VPN) framework offering service providers additional tools for delivering managed VPNs that can be tailored to meet specific, per-site requirements. The framework adds four new VPN access capabilities:

  • Network-based IP VPN with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) remote access -- adding Nortel Networks Alteon SSL remote access capability to a Nortel Networks Shasta network-based IP VPN will allow end-users to remotely access the VPN using either a standard browser equipped with SSL (any browser-equipped device on the Internet) or their current Nortel Networks Contivity VPN client.

  • Ethernet extentions for IP VPNs -- Nortel Networks Passport Multiservice WANs (ATM and Frame Relay) will be interworked with Optical Ethernet networks.

  • IPSec encryption of Network-based IP VPN -- Introduction of Frame Relay interfaces on Contivity allows new VPN deployment options that will enable service providers to encrypt the last mile of a Passport multiservice network-based IP VPN or Frame Relay service. This will give enterprises end-to-end encryption and strong QoS). Enterprises will also be able to expand the reach of their service by securely connecting branch offices across the Internet via Contivity tunneling.

  • Passport IP VPN upgrade -- A new software release for Nortel Networks' Passport Multiservice Switches will increase the scale, scope, performance and reliability of the Passport IP VPN solution. The release is planned for Q3.

Nortel Networks' IP VPN portfolio encompasses the Alteon SSL VPN Switch, Contivity Secure IP Services Gateway, its Optical Ethernet solutions, Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node, and its Passport Multiservice Switches.

MCI Launches Network-Based IP VPN Remote Service

MCI introduced a new IP VPN Remote network-based service designed to securely and seamlessly connect remote and traveling workers to their existing corporate networks via the Internet. MCI said its Secure Interworking Gateway (SIG) provides enterprises with access to their existing frame relay, ATM, Private IP and IP VPN networks via the Internet. The gateway automatically authenticates the connection, requesting user name and password confirmation from the edge server. Once a user is granted access, communications are routed to a customers' data network via a Permanent Virtual Circuit or an IPSec tunnel. As a managed offering MCI owns, manages, monitors and updates the secure gateway deployed within its network. Until now, MCI's CPE-based remote access VPN offering required equipment residing at the customer's location.

  • In September 2001, AT&T announced an IP VPN portfolio that included global remote dial access, Ethernet access and integration with its Internet data centers. The rollout included the ability to uses Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) to leverage existing Frame Relay networks. AT&T later added support for narrowband and broadband IP Security (IPSec) encrypted tunnels for remote access.

DMTF and TM Forum Seek Common Model for Enterprise/Telecom Management

The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), and TeleManagement Forum (TM Forum) will combine their information and modeling approaches to help support telecommunications/enterprise management convergence. The DMTF has developed an enterprise Common Information Model (CIM) for the exchange of management information in a platform-independent and technology-neutral way. The TM Forum's New Generation Operations Systems and Software (NGOSS) is a framework for procuring and deploying operational and business support systems and software in the telecommunications environment. The two groups are now collectively working on the potential for integration of these shared information models to also support telecommunications / enterprise convergence.
