Enhanced Wireless Consortium Agrees on 802.11n

A new Enhanced Wireless Consortium has been established to accelerate the IEEE 802.11n standard development process and promote a technology specification for next-generation WLANs.

The Enhanced Wireless Consortium, which is backed by 27 Wi-Fi industry leaders, has developed a specification that supports speeds of up to 600 Mbps. The group is considering the inclusion of other advanced technologies -- including Space Time Block Coding (STBC) and beamforming -- that will enable systems to deliver greater range for wireless products across multiple market segments and support advanced multimedia applications.

The EWC specification comprises a number of technical elements, including:

  • Mixed-mode interoperability with 802.11a/b/g networks -- provides enhanced performance while maintaining communication with legacy devices;

  • PHY transmission rates up to 600Mbps -- supports applications requiring high data rates (such as transmitting multiple HDTV streams), and reduces battery drain by minimizing the time required to send and receive data streams;

  • Enhanced efficiency MAC with frame aggregation -- brings actual throughput closer to the raw PHY rate, providing end users with at least 100 Mbps application level bandwidth;

  • Use of 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz unlicensed bands -- matches the frequency plan of existing 802.11 devices;

  • 20MHz and/or 40MHz channel support -- uses more of the wireless spectrum when available to enhance performance;

  • Spatial multiplexing modes for simultaneous transmission using 1 to 4 antennas -- increases robustness of wireless connections to support very high data rates;

  • Enhanced range via multiple antennas and advanced coding -- provides for a wider coverage area with consistent wireless speeds.

The EWC plans to make its draft product specification available for public download and will provide implementation rights to all silicon suppliers and system vendors who join the organization. If the EWC specification is ratified by the IEEE, EWC members have agreed to make their intellectual property (IP) necessary to the specification available to all parties on reasonable and non-discriminatory (RAND) terms.

Among the current EWC members are Airoha, Apple, Atheros, Azimuth, Broadcom, Buffalo, Cisco Systems, Conexant, D-Link, Gateway, Intel Corporation, Lenovo, Linksys, LitePoint, Marvell, Metalink, NETGEAR, Ralink, Realtek, SANYO, Sony, Symbol Technologies, Toshiba, USRobotics, WildPackets, Winbond and ZyDAS.

Sprint Workers Go on Strike in Four States

Sprint workers represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) went on strike at local Sprint telephone operations in Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina and Indiana. The strike involves about 300 members represented by Local 3871 in Bluff City, Tenn. (Tri-Cities area); about 100 represented by Local 3672 in Hickory, N.C.; 40 represented by Local 4700 in Evansville, Ind., and about 500 represented by Local 3176 in Ocala, Florida.

The CWA issued a statement citing management plans to eliminate the cap on employee contributions to health premiums as the major strike issue.

The union said it was also concerned about company plans to get rid of current limits on transferring work and jobs to outside contractors, eliminate its contributions to the employees' 401(k) savings plan, slash both short-term and long-term disability benefits, eliminate overtime pay for Sunday work, cut back on paid leave for vacations, holidays and sick leave, and weaken workers' seniority rights.

Qwest Offers New Billing Option for IP Voice Termination

Qwest Communications' IP voice terminating service will begin offering providing operating company number-based (OCN) billing to wholesale facilities-based carrier customers. The new billing option provides pricing at the individual OCN/LATA level, giving customers the ability to reconcile their billing, and manage costs more effectively.

Qwest said many wholesale VoIP customers have paid for services using blended or averaged rates. However, with the OCN billing option for IP voice terminating services, wholesale customers will receive pricing that includes over 25,000 OCN-based rates -- allowing customers to better manage their network routing costs.

Global Crossing Deploys IPv6 in Global Network

Global Crossing has deployed IPv6 natively across it's global IP network. IPv6 is now a standard service component in Global Crossing's global Internet Access Services. The company also confirmed that its global MPLS-based IP VPN infrastructure will be fully IPv6-enabled by the end of 2005.

"IPv6 adds tremendous intelligence, flexibility and scalability to ubiquitous communications," said Anthony Christie, Global Crossing's chief marketing officer. "Governments, research and education networks, transportation companies and wireless carriers will benefit from its built-in security and self-authentication features, delivered over our global, MPLS- based backbone."

The U.S. government has mandated that its agencies adopt IPv6 in their core networks by 2008. Global Crossing serves federal enterprises with a suite of interoperable IP solutions running over its global network, and its capabilities enable the deployment of net-centric operations, as advocated by the Department of Defense (DoD).

Global Crossing is a member of the AT&T Government Solutions Enterprise Networx bid and has also partnered with Northrop Grumman to expand the U.S. Air Force's Distributed Mission Operations Network globally. The company also serves the UK government and has other significant contracts including the British Foreign Commonwealth Office, the British Council, and the UK Rail community.

Global Crossing also noted that Ireland's national research network HEAnet leverages Global Crossing's IPv6-enabled global backbone to empower more than 150,000 students, academics and researchers with high-speed Internet access.
