AT&T's Threat Intellect Sifts Billions of Security Events in Minutes

AT&T unveiled a new Threat Intellect service that takes a Big Data + machine learning approach in sifting through billions of security events captured on the AT&T backbone to identify abnormal and malicious activity based on data patterns.

This new approach, which will be the brains behind AT&T security services going forward, provides visibility into the data patterns and threat activity by using multitudes of unique threat signature data streams, analytics and intelligence. Data can come from mobile devices, applications, data centers, or through AT&T security services. The software-defined network can then apply policies to mitigate the threat.

AT&T estimates this automation will improve the speed at which we can deploy security protections by over 95%, greatly improving threat detection and resolution.

“AT&T secures more connections than any communications company in North America,” said Steve McGaw, chief marketing officer, AT&T Business Solutions. “No carrier experiences the depth and scale of security threats we see on a daily basis– more than 30 billion vulnerability scans and 400 million spam messages are detected on our IP network. The power of Threat Intellect gives us the ability to process 5 billion security events, a full day’s worth of activity for all of our security customers combined – in only 10 minutes.”

“In the past, you had to know exactly where a specific file was stored to access it. Now, you only need a key word to find that file,” McGaw said. “AT&T Threat Intellect has a similar capability. It is the power behind every AT&T firewall, network security protection and every other security capability we have integrated in our network and services.”

AT&T said 117 petabytes of traffic are traversing its network every day.

FCC Looks to Open Millimeter Wave Spectrum for 5G

The FCC adopted rules to identify and open up millimeter wave spectrum to support the rapid advancement to 5G networks and technologies in the United States.

Specifically, the new rules open up almost 11 GHz of spectrum for flexible use wireless broadband – 3.85 GHz of licensed spectrum and 7 GHz of unlicensed spectrum.

The FCC said it is committed to moving fast to establish U.S. leadership in 5G, noting that the nation is the first to open millimeter wave spectrum for 5G.

The rules create a new Upper Microwave Flexible Use service in the 28 GHz (27.5-28.35 GHz), 37 GHz (37-38.6 GHz), and 39 GHz (38.6-40 GHz)
bands, and an unlicensed band at 64-71 GHz.

Licensed use in the 28 GHz, 37 GHz and 39 GHz bands: Makes available 3.85 GHz of licensed, flexible use spectrum, which is more than four times the amount of flexible use spectrum the FCC has licensed to date.

  • Provides consistent block sizes (200 MHz), license areas (Partial Economic Areas), technical rules, and operability across the exclusively licensed portion of the 37 GHz band and the 39 GHz band to make 2.4 GHz of spectrum available.
  • Provides two 425 MHz blocks for the 28 GHz band on a county basis and operability across the band.

Unlicensed use in the 64-71 GHz band: Makes available 7 GHz of unlicensed spectrum which, when combined with the existing high-band unlicensed spectrum (57-64 GHz), doubles the amount of high-band unlicensed spectrum to 14 GHz of contiguous unlicensed spectrum (57-71 GHz). These 14 GHz will be 15 times as much as all unlicensed Wi-Fi spectrum in lower bands.

Shared access in the 37-37.6 GHz band: Makes available 600 MHz of spectrum for dynamic shared access between different commercial users, and commercial and federal users

Digital Realty Signs Wind Power Agreements

Digital Realty Trust announced multiple renewable energy agreements for powering its U.S. data centers.

The deals include a long-term agreement with E.ON Climate and Renewables North America to procure approximately 400,000 megawatt-hours of wind power annually, which will offset 100% of Digital Realty's U.S. colocation and interconnection energy usage, reducing the company's carbon footprint by approximately 275,000 metric tons per year.

"Now more than ever, the overwhelming demand for real-time data, enhanced agility and scalability for online applications is increasing demand for power consumption within the data center," said A. William Stein, Digital Realty's Chief Executive Officer.  "Digital Realty recognizes the importance of addressing our customers' growing demand for renewably powered data centers, and this agreement serves as another example of our deep commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible business practices."

Digital Realty also posted its Green Bond Use-of-Proceeds Statement, which details the use of the approximately $493 million of net proceeds raised through the issuance of a Green Bond in June 2015.  Digital Realty has allocated the net proceeds to nine projects:

  • 3825 NW Aloclek Place / Hillsboro, OR / U.S.
  • 43830 Devin Shafron Drive, Building F / Ashburn, VA / U.S.
  • Unit 1, Power Avenue, Manor Royal / Crawley / Surrey / UK
  • 7500 Metro Center Drive / Austin, TX / U.S.
  • 900 Quality Way / Richardson, TX / U.S.
  • 1-11 Templar Road / Sydney / Australia
  • 98 Radnor Drive / Melbourne / Australia
  • Grange Castle, Nangor Road / Dublin / Ireland
  • 43940 Digital Loudoun Plaza, Building G / Ashburn, VA / U.S.

Infinera Joins Telecom Infra Project

Infinera has joined the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) to help accelerate the pace of innovation in telecommunications infrastructure.

TIP was co-founded by Facebook and operators such as Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom an engineering-focused initiative that aims to reimagine the traditional approach to building and deploying telecom network infrastructure.

Infinera said it will contribute its expertise in developing and deploying innovative packet-optical technologies and solutions for all three areas globally.

“We are delighted to join TIP and look forward to collaborating with Facebook and other industry leaders to define the future of telecom networks,” said Ashoka Valia, Senior Vice President, Business Development at Infinera. “With this collaboration, Infinera’s leadership in technology innovation and large-scale photonic integration to play an even greater role in solving the future connectivity requirements of networks across the globe.”

Facebook's Telecom Infra Project Gets Organized

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP), which was kicked off by Facebook earlier this year with a mission to take the principles of the Open Compute Project (OCP) model and apply them to software systems and components involved in access, backhaul, and core networks, has expanded its membership and formed the first set of technical project groups.

New TIP members include Axiata Digital, Indosat, MTN Group, Telefonica, Vodafone, Acacia, ADVA, BlueStream, Broadcom, Coriant, Deloitte, Juniper Networks, and Lumentum. TIP launch partners included Intel, Nokia, Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom.
