Vertical Systems Group: 1 Million Carrier Ethernet Ports in U.S. by '18

Customer installations of Carrier Ethernet services in the U.S. will reach one million ports in 2018, according to new @Ethernet research from Vertical Systems Group. The projected figure includes all retail Ethernet services at speeds ranging from sub-10 Mbps to more than 10 Gbps.

“U.S. market demand for business-class Carrier Ethernet services is solid. Enterprises and SMBs will make purchase decisions to deploy hundreds of thousands of new Ethernet ports throughout the next several years, facilitated by a range of service options and competitive price points that have never been better,” said Rosemary Cochran, principal at Vertical Systems Group. “Following a 26% increase in U.S. customer port installations last year, growth projections are on track to hit the one million mark by 2018.”

Vertical Systems Group’s latest U.S. Ethernet research quantifies how market growth is being impacted by rising customer demand for bandwidth, coupled with falling service prices. Detailed analysis for six Ethernet service segments shows significant variations in port and revenue projections by access speed. Revenue opportunities by service, as well as the challenges of competitive pricing pressures are also quantified.

Interoute Strikes "Patch Tax" Fees, Opens Canary Wharf Data Centre

Interoute opened the doors of its new London data centre and announced that any customers using its data centres and colocation facilities across Europe will not be subjected to the standard industry practice of recurring colocation patch costs.

Interoute describes these recurring costs for static cables as a "Patch Tax". The company estimates that currently business in the UK spend between £70 and £100 million a year on recurring patch charges.

Interoute's London City data centre forms part of the company's distributed cloud services platform, which encompasses over 60,000 km of lit fibre, 11 data centres, 8 Virtual Data Centres and 31 collocation centres, with connections to 140 additional third-party data centres across Europe.

Colt Activates Dublin-to-London Fiber Route

Colt announced activation of a new, fully operational network route from Dublin to London via Manchester. This is the second high bandwidth route on the Colt network linking Dublin to London.

The Dublin to London route via Manchester follows the launch of Colt’s low latency route from Dublin to London via Birmingham. This latest expansion completes a network ring that links the two capital cities and connects hundreds of Ireland-based companies in the financial services, media and retail sectors to over 195 European cities. It connects Colt’s customers to all major business parks in Dublin, 20 data centres in and around the city, and provides fibre access to over 250 buildings.

“With half of the world’s top banks in Ireland, we’re seeing an increasing demand for high bandwidth connectivity, driven by the move to cloud services and the mission critical nature of data in the digital economy,” said François Eloy, Executive Vice President, Network Services, at Colt. “Our aim is to be the first choice for businesses in Europe. Our continued pan-European network investments provide our customers with unparalleled reach and world class infrastructure, thereby meeting their needs today and in the future.”

Colt said its network is ready to support new technical solutions including IPv6 and 1000Gbps Ethernet. The carrier's infrastructure consists of 47,000km European network connecting 42 metropolitan area networks, 195 European cities and 20 Colt data centres, as well as 37,500km of transatlantic routes and US presence.

NTT Electronics Ships 20 nm 100G Coherent PHY

NTT Electronics began shipping a new 20nm 100G coherent digital signal processor (DSP) for long-haul and metro transport systems.

Broadcom confirmed the device is using its high performance 20 nanometer (nm) signal processing enhanced mixed signal technologies.

Designed in collaboration with NTT Electronics (NEL), the low-power 100G coherent PHY allows the use of a DSP within lower power and smaller second generation coherent 100G modules, including C form factor pluggable (CFP) and compact CFP2 analog coherent optical (ACO) modules.

The Broadcom-enabled coherent physical layer transceiver (PHY) consumes less than half the power of existing long-haul coherent ICs and expands the use of coherent technology to metro and shorter reach links.

"Our collaboration with NTT Electronics has resulted in a game-changing product optimized to deliver the economies of scale and flexibility needed for wide-scale adoption and rapid deployment of 100G over fiber optic networks," said Lorenzo Longo, Broadcom Vice President and General Manager, Physical Layer Products. "Our industry leading 20-nm signal processing enhanced mixed-signal technologies and A0 silicon execution has allowed NEL to substantially reduce power consumption while meeting stringent time to market requirements."

"We are strongly committed to pioneering innovation in the coherent DSP market through our robust partnership with Broadcom," said Haruhiko Ichino, NEL Executive Vice President and General Manager of Broadband System & Device Business Group. "Our novel LP-DSP has already been shipped to more than ten customers, who are designing their product families. We look forward to deployment of our product in early 2015 thereby providing value to the end customers by maximizing the number of 100G ports per system."

Telstra Expands Presence in Equinix Data Centers

Telstra will expand its data center connectivity with Equinix with two new Australia data center deployments in SY3, the most densely connected data center in Australia, and Melbourne’s ME1, Equinix’s first International Business Exchange (IBX) data center at the heart of Australia’s second largest city.

Telstra is also deployed with Equinix in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and Sydney.

Through our global and domestic deployments in Equinix data centers, we have a strong and existing relationship with Equinix. We are in close proximity to hundreds of networks and through these networks, are closer to our customers. The increased network bandwidth enables Telstra to manage more international customers coming to the Australian market. Through our expanded capability in SY3 and ME1, Telstra will have enhanced access to service our customers who choose Equinix as their provider of choice," stated David Piltz, director, Telstra Fixed and Data Access Engineering.
