Nortel Teams with GENBAND on VoIP Migration

Nortel will partner with GENBAND, a supplier of IP media gateway and infrastructure products, to offer new solutions that allow regional North American voice carriers to migrate to VoIP. The solutions enable seamless transition to VoIP for regional carriers while extending Nortel's migration capabilities to DCO and EWSD switches.

GENBAND's media gateways, when paired with the Nortel Communication Server (CS) 1500 and CS 2000, enable users of these legacy TDM voice switches -- serving millions of lines in North America -- to migrate to Nortel VoIP at a significantly lower cost by reusing rather than replacing existing line equipment.

Nortel will resell, distribute and support both GENBAND's G6 Universal Media Gateway and G2 Compact Media Gateway. These media gateways complement the existing capabilities of Nortel's CS 1500 and CS 2000, which already migrate existing line equipment from both the Nortel DMS-100 and DMS-10.

TerreStar and Alcatel-Lucent Develop "IMS-over-Satellite"

TerreStar Networks selected Alcatel-Lucent to supply a next-generation solution for a significant test as TerreStar prepares to build an integrated mobile satellite and land-based communications network in North America, believed to be the first of its kind using the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) to deliver universal access and personalized services over standard wireless devices, such as mobile phones and PDAs.

TerreStar, which is a majority owned subsidiary of Motient Corporation, is planning to build a 4G integrated mobile satellite and terrestrial communications network that will provide universal access and tailored applications throughout North America over conventional wireless devices. TerreStar, which has begun deploying its network for commercial launch in 2008 expects to operate as a carrier's carrier, providing integrated next generation terrestrial and satellite mobility services to communications services providers -- such as wireless carriers, satellite vendors, wireless operators, and electric and telephony cooperatives -- and also providing services directly to companies and government entities.

For the lab trial, Alcatel-Lucent will provide an IMS service delivery architecture that can enable TerreStar's service provider customers to develop and integrate communications applications into the next generation network. TerreStar and its channel partners will test the ability of this new platform to help provide some of the fastest service provider response in the industry to new commercial market opportunities through rapid provisioning and deployment of new applications.

Alcatel-Lucent's solution for TerreStar will include key elements of its IMS portfolio including IMS session controller, consolidated subscriber management system, IMS media server, presence server and IMS application server.
