Arista introduces leaf and spine switches powered by Barefoot silicon

Arista Networks introduced a family of multi-function leaf and spine platforms powered by Barefoot Networks' Tofino series of P4-programmable Ethernet switch chips.

The new Arista 7170 Series switches, which run the Arista EOS (Extensible Operating System) SDK, can boost server performance by offloading Hypervisor vSwitch networking functions such as tunnel termination, security policy enforcement and address translation onto the leaf switch, allowing more work to be accomplished by the compute pool, saving equipment costs and lowering power and cooling.

The 7170 Series is available in two configurations to address both leaf and spine roles:
  • The 2U 7170-64C supports up to 64 ports of 100G or 12.8Tbps, with up to 5Bpps of packet forwarding and a fully shared packet buffer.
  • The 7170-32C is a compact 1U with 32 ports of 100G and the same range of profiles.

The 7170 Series is available now, with a choice of EOS Profiles. Additional profiles will be released over time, with the security and telemetry profiles planned for August 2018. Pricing starts at $1200/100G port for the 64 x 100G system.

Alibaba, AT&T, Baidu, Tencent adopt Barefoot forwarding plane


Barefoot Networks, a provider of advanced, high speed switching technology, announced significant market momentum driven by growing demand for its programmable forwarding plane technology.

Barefoot's 6.5 Tbit/s Tofino switch, which is claimed to be the fastest and P4-programmable switch chip, has been sampling to customers since the fourth quarter of 2016. The company noted that its technology is being adopted by large enterprises and telecommunications providers to increase network performance and efficiency through leveraging programmable forwarding plane technology.

Barefoot stated that it has recently worked with AT&T and SnapRoute to deliver what it believes is the first real-time path and latency visualisation. Utilising Tofino and In-band Network Telemetry (INT), AT&T was able to gain deep insight into the network down to packet-level for the first time to help to address bottlenecks caused by path or latency variation.

Barefoot noted it took 6 weeks to develop the visualisation capability before it was deployed into AT&T's production environment carrying live customer traffic over a Washington DC to San Francisco link.

In addition, major Internet companies Alibaba, Baidu and Tencent have used Tofino and P4 to address challenges in their networks. Barefoot noted that the demands of mega-scale data centres are growing to support new applications and services, while legacy fixed-function switching technology is not sufficiently flexible and so they are using Barefoot to develop custom forwarding planes. The companies are therefore able to adopt load balancing, DDoS protection and INT features without affecting performance.

Barefoot has also expanded its ecosystem via partnerships with equipment manufacturers based in Asia. To date, the company has announced go-to-market partnerships with Edgecore Networks, WNC, H3C, Ruijie and ZTE. These partnerships are designed to enable Barefoot to meet growing demand for programmable networking across a range of network environments.



  • Barefoot Networks, based in Palo Alto, California, exited stealth and unveiled its user-programmable Tofino switch chip in June 2016. Founded in 2013, Barefoot is backed by investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital. The company has raised approximately $155 million in five funding rounds, most recently raising $23 million in November 2016 in a round led by Alibaba and Tencent.

Oracle's Larry Ellison intros cloud migration tool

Larry Ellison, chairman and CTO of Oracle, unveiled an automated enterprise cloud application upgrade product to help Oracle customers reduce the time and cost of cloud migration by up to 30 percent.

Oracle said its "Soar to the Cloud" solution enables customers with applications running on premises to upgrade to Oracle Cloud Applications in as little as 20 weeks.

Oracle Soar includes a discovery assessment, process analyzer, automated data and configuration migration utilities, and rapid integration tools. The automated process is powered by the True Cloud Method, Oracle's proprietary approach to support customers throughout the journey to the cloud. It is guided by a dedicated Oracle concierge service to help ensure a rapid and predictable upgrade that aligns with modern, industry best practices. Customers can keep the upgrade on-track by monitoring the status of their cloud transition via an intuitive mobile application, which features a step-by-step implementation guide indicating exactly what needs to be done each day.

"It's now easier to move from Oracle E-Business Suite to Oracle Fusion ERP in the cloud, than it is to upgrade from one version of E-Business Suite to another," said Ellison. "A lot of tedious transitions that people once did manually are now automated. If you choose Oracle Soar, it will be the last upgrade you'll ever do."


Frontier picks Nokia XGS-PON to deliver 10G business and residential services

Frontier Communications will deploy Nokia's XGS-PON technology to deliver faster broadband speeds to business and residential customers. The phased roll out of the new enhanced services will initially focus on the greater Dallas/Fort Worth areas of Texas before expanding to the rest of the state along with Florida and California. 

Specifically, Frontier is extending its Nokia 7360 deployment with next-generation PON line cards. These allow Frontier to deploy XGS-PON or TWDM-PON on the same card with a pluggable optic swap.

Nokia's Next generation PON supports both traditional and SDAN (Software Defined Access Network) approach. The temperature-hardened 7360 supports 100G network uplinks/rings in CO and many cabinet based deployment options.

CyrusOne plans massive data center campus in Mesa, Arizona

CyrusOne, which currently operates 45 data center facilities across the United States, Europe and Asia (NASDAQ: CONE), has acquired 68.227 acres in Mesa, Arizona for the development of a new data center cloud campus.

The new campus, located in the Mesa Elliot Technology Park, is planned to have five buildings with up to 198 MW of critical power to power the new era of cloud computing services for Fortune 1000 clients.

Box selected for DARPA contract

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has selected Box’s cloud content management platform to deliver secure collaboration agency-wide and with external research partners.

“DARPA is the most impactful research and development organization in the world, having led the development of technologies such as the Global Positioning System, the Internet and many others,” said Sonny Hashmi, Managing Director of Global Public Sector at Box. “We are thrilled to support DARPA’s mission, helping to transform the way they manage research and development projects by empowering their workforce with more collaboration between internal and external stakeholders, all while ensuring compliance with Department of Defense Cybersecurity guidelines.”

AWS debuts Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the general availability of Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (Amazon EKS), a fully managed service for deploying, managing, and scale containerized applications using Kubernetes on AWS.

AWS said its customers are running hundreds of millions of containers every week, many using Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), which is a container orchestration service that supports Docker containers and is integrated with many familiar AWS features like AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), security groups, and Elastic Load Balancing.

Amazon EKS can now be used for managed cluster operations and administration tasks, ensuring that deployments are properly provisioned, secure, highly available, backed up, and updated. Amazon EKS is certified Kubernetes conformant.

“More customers run containers on AWS and Kubernetes on AWS than anywhere else,” said Deepak Singh, Director of AWS Compute Services. “Prior to Amazon EKS, customers either had to do considerable work to architect a highly fault-tolerant way to run Kubernetes, or just accept a lack of resiliency. With the launch of Amazon EKS, customers no longer have to live with either of those trade-offs, and they get a highly available, fault-tolerant, managed Kubernetes service. Allied Telecom Selects RedShift for UC Threat Detection and Fraud Prevention

Allied Telecom, which serves the mid-Atlantic and northeast regions of the U.S., has selected RedShift Networks' Unified Communications Threat Management (UCTM) platform to deliver an additional layer of proactive, intelligent, real-time threat detection and fraud prevention on its voice network. The UCTM platform also provides Allied with an additional source for key analytics and fraud detection troubleshooting. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Redshift, which is based in San Ramon, California, said Allied Telecom can use its UCTM platform not only to detect fraud events, but more importantly, the precursors to fraud – allowing Allied to proactively adapt its security posture to an ever-evolving threat landscape.

The Economic Times: Google dominates in India

Google is building a substantial lead over rivals in India. A report in The Economic Times states that Google Search has more than 90% share of the Indian market and, likewise, YouTube is regularly watched by 80% of online users, and Google's Android OS powers more than 90% of smartphones in the country. Moreover, a mobile payments service called Google Tez quickly captured 60% of transactions a month after its launch in September 2017.

The Economic Times' article states that Google's ambition is to bring everyone in India online through its "next billion users" plan.

Apstra brings multi-tenant EVPNs to its network automation

Apstra released a new version of its intent-based distributed operating system that can automate multi-tenant EVPN across multiple vendors.

Apstra's AOS 2.2 introduces support for multi-tenancy and enhanced inter-rack L2 connectivity through Ethernet VPN (EVPN). EVPN provides a scalable control plane for VXLAN and enables a multi-tenant deployment via VRFs, creating multiple security zones. Apstra said its software automates all aspects of EVPN configuration and operations, across Cisco and Cumulus implementations, effectively providing an “easy button” for EVPN deployments.

This allows customers to continue to address their existing application connectivity requirements as they transition to modern L3 Leaf-Spine Clos architectures for better agility and scale.

Additional new and enhanced features in AOS 2.2 include:

  • Intent-Based Analytics (IBA) enhancements, extensible telemetry, and blueprint discovery
  • TACACS+ support and customizable RBAC roles – Provides integration with existing authentication systems and allow administrators to customize AOS roles to match organization requirements
  • Audit trail – Allows customers to monitor login access to AOS and audit every single change for troubleshooting and compliance.
  • Increased choice in hardware and software – including Dell EMC and Mellanox devices, OpenSwitch (OPX), the latest version of Cumulus (3.6), Ubuntu 16.04 for servers, including the Free-Range-Routing (FRR) routing stack.
  • IPv6 Phase 1 – leverage IPv6 to conserve IPv4 space on fabric links.
