Twitter Reschedules Network Upgrade Due to Events in Iran
San Francisco-based Twitter rescheduled a planned network upgrade on Tuesday night (Pacific time) due to heavy activity from Twitter users in Iran.
In conjunction with NTT America, its network provider, Twitter carried out the planned maintenance on Wednesday afternoon (Pacific time) in order to keep services active during critical hours in Tehran. Twitter confirmed that it consulted with the State Department, but said the State Department does not have access to its decision making process.

Verimatrix Selected to Secure CANTV Pay-TV Service in Venezuela
CANTV, the Venezuelan state-owned operator, has selected the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS) for IPTV. Through a reseller partnership with ZTE, VCAS for IPTV has been integrated with ZTE's ZXBIV IPTV Eyewill solution for the CANTV deployment. In this initial deployment phase, CANTV plans to offer IPTV services with 140 channels to 67,000 subscribers, which is believed to be the largest IPTV project in South America. CANTV is targeting 1.26 million IPTV customers within the next six years.
CANTV's service will feature video-on-demand (VOD), live TV pause, personal video recorder capabilities and time-shifted TV and is expected to launch at the end of 2009. VCAS for IPTV will provide software-based protection for broadcast and VOD content delivered over the operator's managed IP-based network. Through the use of mature, proven two-way Internet security protocols, a Public Key Infrastructure public/private key pair system and X.509 digital certificates, VCAS for IPTV eliminates the vulnerabilities related to smart card-based architectures. A downloadable security system is not only more secure, it enables less expensive set-top box or client device hardware and renewable security software can be updated as required to combat piracy attacks.

Samsung Reveals 32 Gigabyte DDR3 for Servers
Samsung Electronics unveiled the first 32 Gigabyte (GB) DDR3 module -- for use in servers. Based on Samsung's 50 nanometer (nm)-class 4 Gigabit (Gb) DDR3, the 1.35V DDR3 DRAM improves throughput by 20 percent over a 1.5V DDR3.Samsung Electronics said the development of low-power 4Gb DDR3 will be viewed as critical in reducing data center costs, improving server time management and increasing overall operational efficiency at higher densities.

Huawei Shows Android and Windows Mobile Smartphones
At this week's CommunicAsia 2009 in Singapore, Huawei Technologies showcased two new smartphones -- the Android-powered "U8230" and the "C8000" which utilizes the Windows Mobile operating system. Commercial release of both products is slated for the second half of this year. 
The Android-powered U8230 smartphone allows users to switch between full and half QWERTY keyboards and to navigate programs via a 3.5-inch LCD touch screen. Huawei' s U8230 uses the Google Chrome Internet browser which supports a variety of Google applications such as Google Map, Google Search, Google Talk etc.. It is also fitted with a battery which has a capacity of 1500 mAH - the longest battery capacity of any Android-powered handsets currently available.
Huawei also plans to launch a series of touchscreen handsets that support WCDMA, CDMA, and TD-SCDMA standards in the second half of 2009. The company noted that it has now shipped over 50 million CDMA handsets to date.

AT&T Wi-Fi Supports Auto-Authentication on iPhone OS 3.0
AT&T will support auto-authentication for iPhone OS 3.0 user, enabling iPhone users to seamlessly switch from AT&T's 3G network to an AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spot without being prompted. Previously, there was a two-step process. AT&T customers with qualifying iPhone data plans have unlimited access to the more than 20,000 U.S. AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots.
AT&T noted that more than 4 million connections were made at its U.S. Hot Spots with smartphones, including the iPhone 3G, during Q1 2009.

ECI Telecom Announces Wins with Tata Teleservices, Togo
Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) has selected ECI Telecom to deliver India's largest fixed broadband access network supporting speeds of up to 18 Mbps. 
As part of the frame agreement, TTSL will deploy an all-IP next-generation network featuring ECI's Hi FOCuS Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) and SR9000
Carrier Ethernet Switch Router (CESR) platforms. This end-to-end broadband access solution for TTSL's 'Photon Pro' network has already been successfully deployed across eight cities: Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Vizag, Vijayawada, Surat and Baroda. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Israel-based ECI noted that it has been providing the India communication conglomerate with network infrastructure solutions, such as wireless backhaul, WiMax backbone, and broadband access and transport solutions for over five years.
Separately, ECI Telecom announced that Togo Telecom, the incumbent fixed line operator in Togo, has selected its end-to-end turnkey solution for a new high-speed IP network in the country.
This turnkey project will deliver one of the first fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) networks in west Africa, providing residential and business customers with high-speed Internet access and VoIP services. With national fixed-line broadband penetration still in the single digits, the added capacity allows Togo Telecom to alleviate the growing demand for bandwidth-intensive services in the country.
ECI is fully managing and executing the project, including the network audit, planning and design of the FTTC solution, sites survey, installation and commissioning, network integration and solution optimization. The flexible infrastructure platform will allow Togo Telecom to scale up its network to provide higher bandwidth services in the future, including IPTV. ECI is currently implementing the first phase of the three-phase project, deploying its XDM 1000 Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) across the network, and installing its award-winning Hi-FOCuS Multi Service Access Node (MSAN) platforms in over 300 street cabinets nationwide.

Teknovus Demos DOCSIS Mediation Layer Middleware
Teknovus has demonstrated a DOCSIS Mediation Layer (DML) middleware that enables cable operators to EPON-based fiber networks while leveraging their DOCSIS infrastructure. Specifically, the DML middleware enables preservation of the MSO's system integration model and all back-office systems. New FTTx-based services can be provisioned and managed using the DOCSIS and PacketCable architecture, eliminating the rewriting of subscriber provisioning and management systems and costly retraining. Preservation of existing investment is crucial to Japanese Cable Operators, who are in the early stages of FTTx deployment.

Qwest Communications and IBM announced a 5-year agreement to deliver highly proactive managed services to mid-size businesses. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Qwest and IBM will go to market with network management services that simplify complex technology operations and enable customers to optimize their information technology (IT) networks, while minimizing capital expenditure.

KDDI America Deploys Juniper for Ethernet Services
KDDI America has selected Juniper Networks' Carrier Ethernet solution for entry into the U.S. market. KDDI America will be deploying the MX Series routers in the core of its network and the EX Series Switches for aggregation and customer access. The MX Series is a family of Ethernet Services routers with Layer 2 and Layer 3 features designed for high-performance service providers and enterprises. The EX4200 line of Ethernet switches with Virtual Chassis technology combine the High Availability (HA) and carrier-class reliability of modular systems with the economics and flexibility of stackable platforms by enabling up to 10 interconnected switches to be operated and managed as a single logical device. Dell'Oro: 802.11n Grows As Overall Wireless LAN Market Declines in Q1
During Q1, the worldwide wireless LAN market contracted more than 15 percent over the previous quarter, led by a sharp decline in the enterprise market, according to a recently published report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries. The SOHO wireless LAN market fared better than Enterprise as sales of wireless routers, particularly 802.11n, buoyed the market in the first quarter.
"While 802.11n revenues increased in both the SOHO and enterprise wireless LAN segments in the first quarter, the sequential gain was more pronounced in the SOHO wireless router category," said Ben Kwan, Analyst of Wireless LAN research at Dell'Oro Group. "During the first quarter, users opted to pay higher prices for the higher performance of 802.11n wireless routers, propelling 802.11n sales to become the majority of the market. Strong retail brands, D-Link and NETGEAR, benefited the most from this increased demand," added Kwan.
The report also indicates that the Asia Pacific region outperformed the total market as a result of the growth in the region.

The Ericsson Capsule Site is an "all-in-one" solution encapsulating all necessary equipment. The integrated approach could reduce installation time by up to 50 percent, and reduce costs by up to 30 percent. It is delivered in an innovative 'flat-pack' form, making transport significantly easier and can be assembled in less than one day. The site cover, made of composite, weighs 800 kg.

IBM to Invest $100 Million in Mobile Research
IBM plans to shift $100 million investment over the next five years into a major research effort which aims to advance mobile services and capabilities for businesses and consumers worldwide.
In particular, IBM said it is aiming to drive new intelligence into the underpinnings of the mobile web. The three focus areas for IBM's research investment are: mobile enterprise enablement, emerging market mobility and enterprise end-user mobile experiences. Analytics, security, privacy and user interface, and navigation will be concentrated on across the Research effort.
"Mobile devices are gradually becoming ubiquitous and helping us transcend many boundaries -- geographical, economic, and social, among others," says Dr. Guruduth Banavar, global leader of the mobile communications focus for IBM Research and director of IBM Research - India. "With high penetration, simple user interface, and significant cost advantage for end users, mobile telephony holds the future of communication and exchange of information for the enterprise."
As an example of its work, IBM cited its first-of-a-kind (FOAK) program, which used a technology named "BlueStar" to develop automated mobile devices and application management services for insurance claims processing. The pilot enabled an insurance company to significantly reduce the amount of time required to process claims. The right agents were identified through a combination of GPS location technology, presence awareness capabilities and an analysis of all candidate agents' calendar availability. Once agents were selected, the state of their mobile phone's configuration and security status was acquired by BlueStar, and updated, if necessary. BlueStar then assisted with preparing and formatting necessary claims case information for the specific mobile device configuration, and securely transmitted all data to the device.

Ericsson to Acquire Elcoteq's Manufacturing in Estonia
Ericsson signed an agreement with Elcoteq, a supplier to Ericsson, for part of its manufacturing operations in Estonia. The purchase price is EUR 30 million, relating to inventory and some minor assets. The agreement also includes transfer of about 1,200 employees.
Elcoteq supplies radio access products for Ericsson's 2G and 3G base-stations, along with optical- and transmission equipment.
Ericsson outsourced its volume production more than ten years ago. The company said its manufacturing strategy remains the same.
