Cyan Launches CyAlliance Program for Wireless Backhaul

Cyan, a start-up offering multi-layer transport platforms, has launched a multi-vendor partnership program to help service providers maximize wireless backhaul opportunities.

Cyan's recently launched multi-layer transport platforms modularly combine packet, TDM and optical add / drop multiplexer, cross-connect and transport functionality in highly integrated platforms supporting over 100 Gbps per slot. The systems can be configured as basic 10G Ethernet, SONET or SDH edge aggregation and add/drop multiplexer systems or modularly scaled when and where needed to enable DWDM with highly advanced multi-layer packet, TDM and optical switching, aggregation and multiplexing both within and between technologies and network layers for application across the network.

The company's new CyAlliance includes ANDA Networks, Dragonwave, Hatteras Networks and Overture Networks. The alliance provides interoperability assurance through verification testing, rapid problem resolution through pre-defined escalation processes, and collaboration on advanced architectural considerations such as end to end packet synchronization in multi-vendor environments.

Cyan said that while CyAlliance's initial focus is aligned toward wireless backhaul, the program and its partners will expand to focus on a much broader range of evolving services and technologies.

KDDI Selects 3G Femtocell Solution from Hitachi and Airvana

KDDI, Japan's second largest mobile operator, has selected Airvana's 3G CDMA femtocells and Femtocell Service Manager, as part of a comprehensive solution being delivered by Hitachi. Financial terms were not disclosed. The femtocells are home-based cellular access points that use a subscriber's existing broadband connection to provide enhanced voice coverage and data performance for mobile phones indoors.

KDDI, Japan's second largest mobile operator, is known for its dedication to communications innovation and customer satisfaction.

In 2008, Airvana and Hitachi announced a femtocell partnership for the Japanese market.

Airvana's contribution to the joint solution includes its HubBub CDMA femtocell which is unique in the industry for its simultaneous support of both 1x-RTT and 3G EV-DO services; the Femtocell Service Manager (FSM) for massive-scale device management and automated network planning; and the FNG femtocell network gateway. Hitachi will provide core network equipment to connect the HubBub femtocell system into KDDI's core network. Airvana's femtocell and Hitachi's call processing server both use SIP control signaling to transparently support existing CDMA 1x calling functions in the network. Hitachi will also act as the overall system integrator to ensure interoperability between the femtocell network, the macro EV-DO radio access network and the core network infrastructure.

IP Infusion Adds GMPLS, Data Center Bridging, MEF Support

IP Infusion announced a major update to its ZebOS software for network equipment suppliers. Available in April 2010, ZebOS® 7.8 adds support for Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS), Data Center Bridging, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) resiliency for wireless backhaul and Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) implementations required for Carrier Ethernet deployments.

GMPLS support delivers seamless control plane and network management capabilities for next generation packet-based optical networks. This enables automated interface-independent provisioning, simplified network administration and IP/MPLS end-to-end networks. GMPLS. ZebOS 7.8 embraces GMPLS support features and subsequent releases of the ZebOS Network Platform will continue to enhance this support.

Data Center Bridging is a unifying Ethernet-based technology for switch fabrics in the data center. Converged single technology switch fabrics in the data center can optimize traffic for cloud computing while reducing costs, power and space requirements.

The new wireless access/backhaul capabilities of ZebOS 7.8 leverage MPLS reliability features, such as Virtual Circuit Connectivity Verification (VCCV), Bi-Directional Forwarding Detection (BFD) for MPLS LSPs, and BFD for VCCV. In addition to maintaining the features of ZebOS 7.7, ZebOS 7.8 also includes:

  • MEF specifications (MEF-2,9,11,16,13,17,19,20)

  • BGP Multipath Routing

  • Policy Based Routing

Marvell Introduces EPON, 10G EPON and GPON Chips

Marvell introduced new silicon for Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON), Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) and 10Gigabit EPON. The first members of the AVANTA family are single-chip for Single-Family-Unit (SFU) devices designed for a radically reduced energy footprint.

The AVANTA 88F6510 features a high level of integration, including a Gigahertz class CPU, dual-mode PON MAC, Line-rate IPv6-capable programmable packet processor, Voice-over-IP, Ethernet Switch and Ethernet PHYs. Marvell said its AVANTA series uses exceptionally low power and significantly reduces the bill-of-material for PON SFU devices to enable wide deployment.

The AVANTA series is the first to introduce multiple low-power techniques in the PON space - ranging from dynamic CPU speed throttling, sleep mode, low-power DDR3-SDRAM and IEEE Energy-Efficient-Ethernet (EEE) draft-compliance.

The Marvell platform supports tens of 3D HD interactive video streams and a line-rate packet processor with hardware multicasting. It is also the first to support the IEEE Audio-Video-Bridging (AVB) draft specifications. The integrated programmable packet processor not only supports IPv6 but also future-proofs the platform for emerging protocols like DOCSIS over PON.

The AVANTA family will sample to customers at the end of March.

Wireless Skin Patch Combines MEMS Sensors with RFID

Gentag Inc. and The Center for Orthopedic Research and Education are developing a disposable wireless skin patch to allow patients to use their mobile phones to self-monitor wounds after orthopedic surgery.

The idea is to combine advanced MEMS sensors in a skin patch with a disposable wireless chip capable of communicating with cell phones that integrate standard NFC-ISO 15693 RFID reader. Such cell phones include the iPhone via a soon-to-be released RFID retrofit.

The companies said their idea will help reduce post-orthopedic surgical-related medical costs by reducing the time spent in hospitals and detecting possible problems much earlier with less pain and risk.

Director of National Intelligence Cites Persistent Cyber Attacks

Malicious cyber activity is occurring on an unprecedented scale with extraordinary sophistication and the existing balance in network technology currently favors malicious actors, stated Dennis C. Blair, Director of National Intelligence, in prepared testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. He cited persistent, unauthorized, and at times, unattributable presences on exploited government and private networks. Blair also emphasized that network convergence, as well as Web 2.0 business processes, amplifies the opportunity for disruptive cyber attacks.

Fraunhofer IIS Debuts Audio Communication Engine for LTE

Fraunhofer IIS is introducing its new Audio Communication Engine for LTE-A cellular networks, claiming CD-quality audio over mobile. The company said its codec makes voices sound "as clear and natural as if talking to someone in the same room." In addition, rich media content such as music and sounds will be reproduced at their original quality as well.

The Fraunhofer Audio Communication Engine combines several elements that may be incorporated in future 4G handsets to ensure highest possible communication quality. First, the specifically designed MPEG audio communications codec "AAC Enhanced Low Delay" ensures CD quality audio at very low coding delays and bit rates. Second, robust, multi-channel echo control software reliably removes echoes, providing hands-free convenience and complete freedom to move around in a room. Finally, a specially matched IP streaming stack and error concealment tools allow for high-quality audio even under adverse network conditions.

Fraunhofer will demonstrate the technology at this month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. An office setting will be connected to a car mock-up using, using an LTE-A demonstration network provided by Fraunhofer HHI, and the Fraunhofer Audio Communication Engine.
