NSN Supplies Circuit Switched Fallback to KDDI

Nokia Siemens Networks is implementing its Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) technology to enable CDMA and LTE technologies to work together in KDDI’s network in Japan.


Nokia Siemens Networks’ CDMA-LTE CSFB solution is implemented via software on the existing CDMA 1X system, which interfaces with KDDI’s LTE network. Exhaustive trials of end-to-end CSFB have already been successfully conducted and the nationwide deployment will be completed by mid 2012. NSN said this ensures readiness of end-to-end CSFB functionality in anticipation of KDDI’s commercial LTE network launch later in 2012.

Government Agencies Find Harmful Interference from LightSquared

Department of Defense and Department of Transportation have concluded that LightSquared signals cause harmful interference to the majority of tested general purpose GPS receivers. Final analysis of data from last month's test will take several more weeks to complete. Then a report will be filed with the NTIA and FCC.


Separate analysis by the Federal Aviation Administration also found interference with a flight safety system designed to warn pilots of approaching terrain.


LightSquared's CEO, Sanjiv Ahuja, issued the following statement: "We are pleased that the statement issued by the National Space-Based PNT Executive Committee, chaired by the Department of Defense and the Department of Transportation, validates LightSquared's compatibility with the nation's 300 million cellular phones. While we are eager to continue to work with the FAA on addressing the one remaining issue regarding terrain avoidance systems, we profoundly disagree with the conclusions drawn with respect to general navigation devices.

Huawei and Indonesia's Telkomsel Open Innovation Centre

Huawei and ,Telkomsel, the leading operator in Indonesia, opened a new innovation centre and LTE demonstration in Bandung. The R&D facility focuses on high definition video, FTP throughput, live high-speed Internet, and digital shopping mall demonstrations. The LTE demonstration is showing Huawei's SingleRAN LTE solution delivering downlink data rates of up to 71.4 Mbps with 10 MHz bandwidth.

Broadcom Raises its Q4 2011 Guidance

Broadcom raised its Q4 2011 financial guidance, citing strong shipments. The new guidance:

  • Net Revenue: Increased to the high end of the prior range to approximately $1.8 billion.

  • Product Gross Margin (GAAP and Non-GAAP): Increased to the high end of the prior range to roughly flat sequentially.

  • R&D Plus SG&A Expenses (GAAP and Non-GAAP): Estimated to be approximately $5 million favorable on a GAAP basis and at the midpoint of prior guidance on a non-GAAP basis due to slower than anticipated hiring ramps and certain credits in the period.

  • Ending Cash & Marketable Securities: Increase sequentially to approximately $5.1 billion on strong cash flow and a completed debt offering.

Brazil's Sky Deploys TD-LTE with Nokia Siemens Networks

SKY, the largest satellite Pay-TV operator in Brazil, has launched a TD-LTE service in Brasilia. Nokia Siemens Networks is the sole vendor for the launch.


Under a three year contract, Nokia Siemens Networks supplied its Flexi Multiradio Base Station. The company has also provided its FlexiPacket Microwave transport platform and Evolved Packet Core (EPC), along with its NetAct network management system to provide consolidated configuration, monitoring and network optimization. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks has provided its CPEi-lte 7212, a wireless router built for indoor use that provides fixed wireless connectivity to TD-LTE services via WiFi or Ethernet.

Caltech Physicists Transfer Data at 186 Gbps

At last month's SuperComputing 2011 (SC11) conference in Seattle, researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the University of Victoria, the University of Michigan, the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Florida International University and others, transferred data in opposite directions at a combined rate of 186 Gbps.


Using a 100-Gbps circuit set up by Canada's Advanced Research and Innovation Network (CANARIE) and BCNET, a non-profit, shared IT services organization, the team was able to reach transfer rates of 98 Gbps between the University of Victoria Computing Centre located in Victoria, British Columbia, and the Washington State Convention Centre in Seattle. With a simultaneous data rate of 88 Gbps in the opposite direction, the team reached a sustained two-way data rate of 186 Gbps between two data centers, breaking the team's previous peak-rate record of 119 Gbps set in 2009.


The university researchers said these fast rates are crucial for dealing with the tremendous amounts of data coming from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN.

Alvarion Sets 2012 Financial Targets

Alvarion issued revised guidance for Q4 2011 and set new financial targets for 2012 and beyond as it integrates recently acquired Wavion and implements its multi-technology wireless broadband strategy.


Looking ahead, Alvarion said it will focus on business segments which are expected to be less sensitive to global economic conditions, focus on areas in which it can add significant value to customers, reduce or postpone investment in areas that are most likely to be negatively impacted by macro-economic factors, and use resources as efficiently as possible by rationalizing the organization and consolidating Alvarion and Wavion development projects.


Specifically, Alvarion plans to address mobile operators with capacity and coverage solutions such as WiFi offload and distributed antenna systems (DAS) to enhance 3G/4G network performance, private networks in target vertical markets, BWA (broadband wireless access) service providers in certain rural and emerging markets, and WISPS (wireless internet service providers). Alvarion will provide an optimized multi-technology portfolio of solutions using both licensed and unlicensed spectrums. The portfolio will include a flexible software-defined 4G RAN platform and carrier-grade outdoor WiFi solutions.


Alvarion’s Q4 2011 report, which will include Wavion’s results from November 23, 2011, expects revenues in Q4 to be $42 to $44 million. The non-GAAP loss per share is expected to be ($0.03) to ($0.04).

For 2012, Alvarion is now targeting a non-GAAP operating profit margin of 5% for 2012. After capital expenditures and debt service, the 2012 cash balance at yearend is expected to be about $65 million, similar to the level expected at year-end 2011. The overall non-GAAP gross margin target for 2012 is 45% and the target for operating expenses is below 40% of revenue. Taking into account the macro-economic outlook, management is basing the plan on an assumed revenue level of $185 million to $195 million for 2012, which includes approximately $25 million of revenue from Wavion products. http://www.alvarion.com

  • In November, Alvarion acquired privately-held Wavion, an Israel-based developer of carrier-grade WiFi solutions, for approximately $30 million in cash, including an assumed earn-out. Wavion supplies WBS omni-direction and sector base stations, which operate at 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 700 MHz. Wavion leverages two-way spatially adaptive beamforming and Multiple Input Multiple Output ( MIMO) technologies. The company's revenues for the last twelve months were approximately $16 million.

Orckit-Corrigent Supplies Packet Transport Network in Honduras

Cable Color, a leading telecommunication service provider in Honduras, has selected Orckit-Corrigent’s IP/MPLS and MPLS-TP based CM-4000 PTN switches and the accompanying CM-View network management system to introduce a networking environment for broadband and enterprise VPN services.

OFS Laboratories Develops Optical Resonator

Researchers from OFS Laboratories have developed a way to manufacture long chains of microresonators by making nanoscale changes to the diameter of normal optical fiber. The breakthrough may pave the way for storing light as memory. The work is described in the Optical Society’s (OSA) journal Optics Letters.


"Optical computers, which use light particles—photons—in place of electrons to process and store information, have the potential to be much faster than today’s electronic computers," said Misha Sumetsky, a researcher at OFS Laboratories and lead author on the study. "Unfortunately, manufacturing microresonators that meet the demands of optical computing has been a long and, until now, unsuccessful pursuit."


Sumetsky and his colleagues at OFS Laboratories, formerly part of the famous Bell Labs, used the silica strand of optical fiber to create the microresonator instead of conventional lithography on silicon wafers. The technique varies the optical fiber diameter by several nanometers, forcing light traveling along the surface of the fiber to turn around and head back the way it came. If it were traveling between two narrowed portions of fiber, the light would continue to resonate back and forth with very little loss of signal. This is, in fact, the microresonator. Fujitsu Releases 100G Packet ONP

Fujitsu introduced a packet optical networking platform (Packet ONP) that employs the latest digital coherent technology with DP-QPSK optical modulation to enable ultrafast optical transmission speeds of 100Gbps x 80W over long distances. The Packet ONP platform employs a modular architecture that enables flexible assembly of WDM and packet transmission. It also features high-speed switchover to back-up lines in under 50ms in the event of network failure. A mesh network also makes trouble isolation possible with Colorless/Directionless/Contentionless (CDC) functionality, which allows for discretionary selection to channel through up to eight circuit routes. Fujitsu is supporting MPLS-TP with this platform.


Fujitsu has previously conducted 100G field trials at transmission speed of 100Gbps in North America. The company said these technologies will strengthen its FLASHWAVE 9500 multiplexed optical transport platform which is widely deployed in the global market. Moving forward, Fujitsu will make available its Packet ONP, integrated with WDM technology for optical transmission, to the domestic Japan and overseas markets.

Huawei Claims TDD DSL Achieves Symmetric 1 Gbps over Twisted Pair at 100m

Huawei announced a prototype Giga DSL system that employs time division duplex (TDD) to achieve a total upstream and downstream rate of 1,000 Mbps over a single twisted pair. The company said that by using low-power spectral density in-signal transmission, its Giga DSL prototype reduces radiation interference and power consumption, and provides a total upstream and downstream rate of one Gbps within 100 meters, and 500 Mbps-plus within 200 meters.


Huawei noted that the ITU-T set up a G.fast project team earlier this year to develop new standards for ultra-speed access at short distances. The project's aim is to achieve 500 Mbps access rate per twisted pair within 100 meters. Huawei has actively participated in the work of the team and has become a major technical contributor, having recently worked to incorporate TDD-OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) as a G.fast modulation mode.


Dr. Long Guozhu, Huawei’s Principal Expert of DSL technology, said, “Huawei has taken the lead in developing a Giga DSL prototype because of our rich capabilities and industry-leading technical strength in access networks. It was inevitable that spectrum expansion would help us improve the rate of a twisted pair at a short distance, but after the spectrum is expanded, a technical issue appears: how to design the high-speed physical layer and high-frequency analog front end (AFE). To tackle this issue, Huawei’s FBB Innovation Lab used the core solution TDD-OFDM, which simplifies the physical-layer architecture and the AFE design, while at the same time makes it possible to be downward compatible with traditional ADSL/VDSL2 technologies.�?


Huawei also recently announced the successful development of the world’s first node level vectoring (NLV) prototype. Huawei’s vectoring product provides 100 Mbps access over a single twisted pair in FTTC/FTTB, and has been tested and commercially trialed with many leading telecom operators. This, along with the company’s latest prototype, Giga DSL, signifies that DSL technology still has great potential to meet the requirements of broadband users for ultra-high-speed access in the future.

Alcatel-Lucent Introduces 40GigE module for the OmniSwitch 6900

Alcatel-Lucent introduced a 40 GigE switching module for its OmniSwitch 6900 enterprise network switch. The new module enables multiple switches to be linked together to create a "40 GigE Pod", which will help enterprises prepare their data center networks for the emerging "carrier cloud" category of services. The 40GigE Pod is a highly dense, any-to-any interconnection of OmniSwitch Top-of-Rack switches.
