Cisco and Nokia Siemens Networks Announce OSS Initiative for NGNs

Cisco and Nokia Siemens Networks agreed to develop a standards-based telecommunications network management platform for service providers. The jointly developed Operations Support Systems (OSS) platform aims to help the entire service provider community better align network capabilities and costs with business demands.



The two companies said they are committed to long-term cooperation, bringing together Cisco's IP competence and Nokia Siemens Networks' end-to-end telecommunications capability, as well as extensive research and development (R&D) and economic resources from both companies.



As part of the agreement, Cisco and Nokia Siemens Networks will deliver a solution that will provide a common end-to-end network view of diverse network elements - across IP and mobile technologies - that are automatically discovered and represented as a virtual network model. Likewise, the solution will provide a complete view of network resources regardless of platforms, technologies or vendors. The platform will include basic fault, configuration, performance and security (FCAPS) management functionality as well as a variety of common functions, such as data acquisition and network element mediation, which will be utilized by higher-level OSS applications.



Nokia Siemens Networks brings to the collaboration its out-of-the-box software product, Open EMS Suite by Nokia, which provides capabilities of an element management system (EMS) and can be used to build EMS for various kinds of networks including transport, mobile, and broadband.



Along with its expertise in IP networking, Cisco also brings its Cisco Active Network Abstraction (ANA) management solution to the collaboration. Cisco ANA is already the basis for managing complex multi-vendor networks as well as providing the base platform for new management solutions, such as the Cisco Managed Services Solution. Cisco ANA also provides management support for the Cisco CRS-1 routing platform.

Cisco to Acquire BroadWare for IP Video Surveillance

Cisco Systems agreed to acquire privately-held BroadWare Technologies, a developer of IP-based video surveillance software, for an undisclosed sum.



BroadWare's software enables web-based monitoring, management, recording and storage of audio and video that can be accessed anywhere by authorized users. BroadWare was founded in 1995 and has 38 employees, with offices in Santa Clara, California and McLean, Virginia.



Cisco said the acquisition will enable it to help customers gain access to live and recorded surveillance video for faster investigation response and event resolution.



"Cisco views the video surveillance infrastructure market as an immediate high growth opportunity that requires the ability to support both IP and analog device installations," said Marthin De Beer, Senior Vice President of Cisco's Emerging Market Technologies Group (EMTG). DiVitas Offers MMC for Nokia Eseries Handsets

DiVitas Networks released its mobile-to-mobile convergence (MMC) client software for Nokia Eseries business devices, enabling business calls to be switched off the mobile network and onto a corporate Wi-Fi network. The solution is WLAN, mobile-network-, handset-, operating system-, carrier- and PBX-agnostic.



The DiVitas MMC solution is comprised of a Mobile Convergence Appliance (MCA) deployed inside the enterprise and a Mobile Convergence Client (MCC) running on handsets such as Nokia Eseries business devices based on S60 software on Symbian OS.

Occam Offers 10GbE Aggregation Blade

Occam Networks introduced its new Broadband Loop Carrier (BLC) 6450 10GbE access aggregation blade. It is designed for two applications:

  • Inter-central office or Access aggregation -- integrating IPTV, multi-service (for example POTS, VOIP, Internet, T1) and mobile backhaul networks.


  • Business access and aggregation -- including 10/100/1000 Active Fiber Ethernet, transparent LAN service and EPL or EVPL services as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF).


The BLC 6450 supports 10 Gigabit optical aggregation rings and subtended subscriber access rings as well as business Ethernet services. Occam said that the BLC 6450 can deliver redundancy and reliability comparable to traditional SONET rings with similar bandwidth of an OC-192 at a lower cost when configured in topologies using its patented EPS technology.



The BLC 6450 is currently in field trials and is expected to ship in June 2007.

Juniper and Microsoft Agree on Interoperable Network Access Control

Juniper Networks and Microsoft are working together to provide open standards-based interoperability between Juniper Networks Unified Access Control (UAC) and Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP). The companies are demonstrating NAP/UAC interoperability this week at Interop Las Vegas 2007. The companies said they are committed to support the Trusted Computing Group's (TCG) Trusted Network Connect (TNC) open specifications for network access control. Microsoft has contributed NAP's primary Statement of Health (SOH) client-server protocol to the TCG. The TCG has adopted and published the Microsoft SOH protocol as a new TNC standard (IF-TNCCS-SOH). This will enable interoperability of NAP clients and servers with TNC clients, servers and infrastructure such as the Juniper Networks UAC solution.

XO to Supply 2.5Gbps Wavelengths to China Netcom

XO Communications will provide China Netcom USA with multiple inter-city XO(R) Wavelength Services at 2.5 Gigabits per second speeds across a nationwide footprint connecting China Netcom's points of presence in the United States. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Hexago Introduces IPv6 Home Access Proxy

Hexago, which specializes in IPv6 deployment solutions, introduced its Home Access Proxy 6 (HAP6), which allows the deployment of IPv6-based peer to peer (P2P) services and user generated content (UGC) services over IPv4 networks.



Hexago's Gateway6 provides interoperability between IPv4 and IPv6. In conjunction with Gateway6, HAP6 provides a peer to peer (P2P) connection between the fixed or mobile host on the Internet and multiple IP devices in the home network. The two peers can be any combination of IPv4 and IPv6, including IPv4 Internet hosts connecting to IPv4 devices on an IPv4 private network. The HAP6 client is required to be present in the private network. The client can be in the form of software on the home computer, embedded software on devices such as a home gateway or the customer- premises equipment (CPE), or a Dongle6 provided by Hexago. No software is required for the host devices accessing the private network.



Fixed or mobile service providers could use the HAP6 to give all of their home/users its own URL, thereby enabling remote control of all IP devices in the home. Examples of HAP6 enabled services include camera, home automation, big big email, remote support, home station, home Web site, file sharing and buddy backup.



Hexago said HAP6 provides plug and play installation without any specific network requirements. That means that there is no need to configure the Network Address Translation (NAT) with port forwarding or any other configuration. As port forwarding isn't used, it is also possible to have any number of services in the home. IPv6 ensures that all the devices are uniquely addressable, which means there is no limit to the number of devices supported in the home network.

Atheros Unveils its Second Generation 802.11n

Atheros Communications launched its second generation XSPAN draft 2.0 802.11n family of chipset solutions, predicting an expansion of the market in the second half of the year. Like Atheros' previous generation XSPAN products, the new AR9001 family is compliant to the latest IEEE draft 2.0 802.11n specification.



Atheros said 802.11n end-products are now poised for broader adoption by consumers who want the higher-performance and future-proofing benefits of 802.11n for home and small office networks. Its new generation of silicon delivers higher levels of integration for lower costs in consumer networking products. Specifically, the new SoCs integrate Atheros' 802.11n MAC/baseband and 400MHz Wireless Network Processor (WNPU) into a single chip.



Two versions of the SoC target the most popular consumer router configurations: the AR9130 with 2x2 MIMO and Fast Ethernet support and the AR9132 with 3x3 MIMO and Gigabit Ethernet support. The SoCs are paired with a newly enhanced AR910x single-chip radio transceiver, featuring single- (2.4 GHz) and dual-band (2.4/5 GHz) options, to form a series of AR9001AP chipsets. Four chipset configurations are being introduced:

  • AR9001AP-2NG: 11n single-band with 2x2 MIMO, Fast Ethernet

  • AR9001AP-2NX: 11n dual-band configurable with 2x2 MIMO, Fast Ethernet

  • AR9001AP-3NG: 11n single-band with 3x3 MIMO, Gigabit Ethernet

  • AR9001AP-3NX: 11n dual-band configurable with 3x3 MIMO, Gigabit Ethernet


Atheros is also introducing a dual-band capable 802.11n USB chipset. Wi-Fi USB adapters provide after-market wireless connectivity to a variety of consumer devices - laptop and desktop PCs, gaming consoles and PVRs/home gateways. Atheros' USB family consists of entry-level and high- performance USB designs:

  • AR9001U-2X: 11n dual-band with 2x2 MIMO

  • AR9001U-2NG: 11n single-band with 2x2 MIMO

  • AR9001U-NG: 11n single-band with 1x2 MIMO


In addition, Atheros is launching a dual-concurrent 802.11n AP/router design supporting simultaneous use of both WLAN frequency bands to deliver up to 600Mbps aggregate physical data rate.

Motorola Invests in VidSys for Security/Surveillance

Motorola has made an equity investment in VidSys, which specializes in Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) solutions for safety, security, commercial, surveillance, military and transportation organizations. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.



PSIM is the marriage of video management for security and surveillance applications with incident and event management.



"There is a need for a stronger convergence of physical and IT security assets in order to provide better response to public safety incidents and threats," said Reese Schroeder, managing director, Motorola Ventures.



The VidSys platform is based on an open, hybrid architecture that integrates data from any video source, as well as any detection, monitoring or control system. The company was founded in 2005 and previously received funding from IDG Ventures.

LSI Unveils PayloadPlus Processors for SMB Gateways

LSI Corporation introduced its Advanced PayloadPlus 2200 processor designed for multi-service business gateways serving the small-and-medium business (SMB) and remote branch office (RBO) markets.



The chip features a dual-CPU processor core for handling voice, security, and other applications. The APP2200 accommodates a user range from 5 to more than 500. The APP2200 portfolio integrates including a dedicated packet processor, integrated classifier, traffic manager, security engine, voice processing, and a high-performance dual-core control and services processor. Availability is set for July 2007.



Nortel is using the Advanced PayloadPlus processor for development of a family of products targeted specifically at the small-to-medium sized business (SMB) segment.

XO to Supply 10Gig Wavelengths to NTT America

XO Communications will provide multiple 10 Gbps wavelength circuits to NTT America connecting regional and coast-to-coast locations across the United States. NTT America will use the XO wavelength services to expand the capacity of its network, connect multiple data centers and points of presence on its backbone and support the delivery of services it currently provides to its customers.

Fabrik Raises $25 Million for Personal Content Services

Fabrik, a start-up based in San Mateo and Santa Ana, California, raised
$24.9 million in series D funding to support its consumer-oriented storage and content management services. The company's flagship product is www.myfabrik.com, which is marketed directly to consumers and through partnerships with global market leaders. In addition, Fabrik offers a line of SimpleTech-branded products including external, portable and network storage solutions as well as flash memory cards, USB flash drives and memory upgrades.



The funding was led by 3i and included investment from continued partner ComVentures.

NETGEAR and Avaya Partner on VoIP for SMBs

NETGEAR and Avaya are partnering to deliver an IP telephony solution for small businesses of 20 users or less. The solution will feature the Avaya Quick Edition peer-to-peer technology, which eliminates the need for a central phone server or PBX. In addition to call hold, transfer, paging and other basic functions, the phones provide advanced features such as auto attendant, conferencing, a single inbox for voice and e-mail messages, and the ability to have office calls ring on a mobile phone. NETGEAR will provide the network infrastructure for the solution, including Smart Switches with power over Ethernet (PoE) capability that can remotely power Avaya phones. When supported by an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), these switches can continue to power Avaya Quick Edition during a power outage. A NETGEAR VPN firewall provides a secure and seamless connection for teleworkers who need to link back to the main office.

Broadcom OctalPHY Extends Ethernet to 500 Meters on Cat5

Broadcom introduced an eight-port octal physical layer (PHY) device that extends the reach of Ethernet over twisted pair cables. The new 65 nanometer CMOS octal PHY enables 10/100 Ethernet to operate over extended distances (up to 500 meters) on one, two or four wire pairs of Category 5 (CAT 5) or telephony grade cabling. The technology supports traditional Ethernet services over a single twisted wire pair.



Broadcom said in contrast to previous technologies that extended the range of Ethernet over twisted pair, its BroadR-Reach approach enables every BroadR-Reach port to also support IEEE 802.3-compliant technologies such as 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T. As a result, BroadR-Reach provides interoperability and connectivity to standard 10/100/1000BASE-T devices over distances up to 100 meters while extending 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps operations to 500 meters. Additionally, BroadR-Reach technology works with Power over Ethernet (PoE) to support applications such as security camera surveillance.



The Broadcom BCM54880 octal Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) PHY is the first member of Broadcom's GbE BroadR-Reach family of copper PHY products and includes eight 10/100/1000BASE-T and BroadR- Reach transceivers integrated on a single 65nm CMOS chip. The BCM54880 includes eight SGMII serial media access controller interfaces and eight copper ports, whereby each copper port supports one, two or four twisted pair line connections. Sampling is underway.

Ditech Appoints Former CEO of Jasomi as VP of Marketing

Ditech Networks named Todd Simpson as Vice President of Marketing. Simpson came to the company through Ditech's acquisition of Jasomi Networks, a developer of VoIP session border controllers, in June of 2005. Since then, he has served Ditech in a number of senior management roles. He previously served as President and CEO of Jasomi.

On2 Technologies to Acquires Finland's Hantro for Mobile Video Compression

On2 Technologies, which develops video compression technology, agreed to acquire Finland-based Hantro Products Oy, a provider of video technology for mobile devices.



Hantro provides optimized video compression implementations for mobile, digital consumer-electronics and IPTV devices. The company's customers include Nokia, Freescale, LSI, Vimicro, Sanyo and over 20 other leading global device and semiconductor manufacturers. The companies said Hantro's technology has been implemented on more than 200 million devices to date and in mobile phones produced by 5 of the top 6 handset manufacturers.



On2 said the acquisition is intended to accelerate the deployment of On2's technology on semiconductor chipsets that power mobile and embedded devices. This will further On2's strategy for establishing a leadership position in the distribution and consumption of video on all three major device platforms used by consumers: PCs, mobile/portable devices and television.



"We have long set the standard for excellence in video with our codec technology. By gaining access to Hantro's technology and expertise in chip implementation, we expect to be able to extend our reach on devices," said Bill Joll, president and CEO of On2. Huawei and Symantec to Form JV Targeting Security, Storage

Symantec and Huawei Technologies are forming a joint venture company to develop and distribute security and storage appliances to global telecommunications carriers and enterprises. The new company will be headquartered in Chengdu, China, with Huawei owning 51 percent of the joint venture and Symantec owning 49 percent.

Huawei will contribute its telecommunications storage and security businesses including its integrated supply chain and integrated product development management practices. Additionally, the new company will have access to Huawei's intellectual property (IP) licenses, research and development capabilities, manufacturing expertise and engineering talent, which includes more than 750 employees.

Symantec will contribute some of its leading enterprise storage and security software licenses, working capital, and its management expertise into the new company. Symantec will also contribute $150 million toward the joint venture's growth and expansion.

The companies expect their joint venture to close late in the calendar year, pending required regulatory and governmental approvals.
