ADC to Acquire LGC Wireless for In-Building Wireless Extensions

ADC agreed to acquire LGC Wireless, a provider of specialized in-building wireless coverage and capacity solutions, for $169 million.




LGC Wireless offers platforms for extending in-building wireless voice/data coverage for GSM and CDMA networks. The company has also announced an in-building WiMAX extension solution. LGC Wireless had sales of $83 million in the last 12 months ended September 30, 2007 compared to sales of $43 million in the year ended December 31, 2006. The company has approximately 240 employees and is based in San Jose, California.



ADC described the acquisition as a central part of its All IP Radio Access Network (IP RAN) strategy announced earlier this year. LGC's network systems mobile switching and wireless office solutions will augment ADC's existing outdoor solutions.

Riverbed Enhances WDS for Disaster Recovery Acceleration

Riverbed Technology released version 4.1 of its Riverbed Optimization System (RiOS), adding application-specific optimization for large-scale data transfers. Specifically, Riverbed has enhanced its RiOS software with disaster recovery intelligence and is introducing a new Steelhead appliance model 6120, which is optimized for disaster recovery. In addition, Riverbed has introduced optimizations for Oracle11i applications.



In RiOS 4.1, Riverbed is using behavioral traffic recognition to enable adaptive acceleration based on the size and type of the data to be transferred. The system automatically recognizes disaster recovery operations, such as data replication and backup jobs, to achieve even faster performance for large-scale data transfers.



The new Riverbed Steelhead appliance model 6120, which is optimized for data-center-to-data-center transfers, has a raw capacity of seven terabytes and a data store that is over three terabytes in size, doubling the capacity of Riverbed's currently available largest Steelhead appliance model. The Steelhead appliance model 6120 will be generally available on November 15, 2007. The US list price is $119,995.

Guangdong Telecom Chooses Redback/Ericsson

Guangdong Telecom selected Ericsson to upgrade its broadband network using Redback's SmartEdge router platform for data, voice and video services. Financial terms were not disclosed.



Guangdong Telecom is the largest provincial carrier in China with more than 40 million customers. Under the deal, Redback and Ericsson will help Guangdong Telecom expand its residential and business services for more than 5 million broadband customers.



Redback and Ericsson said they are managing 43 percent of fixed broadband subscribers for telephone carriers in China. Redback has deployed more than 1,000 routing platforms in 22 of 32 provinces with China Telecom and China Netcom, the two largest wire-line carriers in China.

Hong Kong's PCCW Selects Redback

PCCW, the incumbent operator in Hong Kong, has chosen Redback Networks' SmartEdge multi-service edge router platform to help deliver video-on-demand and other broadband services. PCCW currently ranks as the largest IPTV service provider worldwide, serving more than 800,000 subscribers. It is also one of the largest broadband carriers in China with more than 1 million customers. Financial terms were not disclosed.



Redback said the PCCW deal puts it at the center of more than 50 percent of the largest IPTV deployments in the world. Other Redback customers deploying IPTV and broadband video services include AT&T, Belgacom, China Telecom, China Netcom, ChungHwa Telecom, Korea Telecom, KPN, Neuf Cegetel, among others.

Siemens Introduces HiPath Wireless Controller for FMC

Siemens Communications introduced its HiPath Wireless C20 Controller for extending fixed-mobile convergence into small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The C20 offers features that were previously available on the HiPath Wireless C2400 Controller - a large-enterprise, high-volume appliance.


The new C20 controller supports end-to-end QoS, enabling prioritized traffic handling from the Access Point (AP) all the way to the end destination. On the network side, it integrates with the existing wired network.



The C20 also boasts an increase in throughput with its two Gigabit Ethernet ports. Virtual LAN support at the controller is also provided. In addition, Siemens' VNS enables centralized segmentation of the WLAN by user, device or application. Each controller supports up to 32 APs and 512 users. The network can add more C20 controllers as needed.

Time Warner Telecom Appeals FCC Partial Grant of AT&T Forbearance Petition

Time Warner Telecom filed an appeal in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals of the FCC's October 11th partial grant of the AT&T forbearance petition concerning business broadband services. The appeal was filed on the grounds that the FCC Order violated the conditions of previous FCC approvals for the AT&T/BellSouth merger and that the Commission erroneously granted wholesale broadband special access relief based on analysis only of the retail market.



"The retail and wholesale markets are separate and distinct," explained Paul Jones, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Time Warner Telecom. "Section 10 of the '96 Act requires that the FCC analyze whether the application of dominant carrier regulation to the services specified by AT&T in its petition continues to be necessary to ensure that charges and practices with respect to those services are just and reasonable. At the very least, that analysis requires that the FCC identify the correct product market."http://www.twtelecom.com

• Earlier this month, The FCC granted a forbearance petition from AT&T under which the carrier sought a regulatory relief of its broadband infrastructure and fiber capabilities. This relief provides AT&T with more flexibility with regard to its existing packet-switched broadband telecommunications services and its existing optical transmission services. The regulatory relief is similar to that granted to Verizon in March 2006.
  
  
  
  Under Title II of the Telecom Act, dominant carriers are subject to price cap or rate-of-return regulation, and must file tariffs for many of their interstate telecommunications services – on either seven or fifteen days' notice – and usually with supporting data. In addition, applications to discontinue, reduce, or impair service are subject to a 60-day waiting period for dominant carriers, as opposed to a 31-day period for nondominant carriers. Finally, dominant carriers must follow more stringent procedures under section 214 of the Act for certain types of transfers of control for which nondominant carriers are accorded presumptive streamlined treatment.
  
  
  
  In this ruling, the FCC granted AT&T forbearance from the application of dominant carrier tariff filing, cost support, discontinuance, and domestic transfer of control and certain Computer Inquiry requirements to broadband services with regard to (1) its existing non-TDM-based, packet-switched services capable of transmitting 200 kbps or greater in each direction; and (2) its existing non-TDM-based, optical transmission services. These services include Frame Relay Services, ATM Services, LAN Services, Ethernet-Based Services, Video Transmission Services, Optical Network Services, and Wave-Based Services. This grant is restricted to services that AT&T currently offers and lists in its petitions, and excludes all TDM-based, DS1 and DS3 services.

Multimedia over Coax Alliance Tops 175 Mbps, PQoS

A new version of the Multimedia over Coax (MoCA) in-home networking standard has been ratified adding PQoS (parameterized quality of service) for bandwidth management and prioritization of multiple streams of HD content. MoCA Version 1.1 features packet net throughputs of 175 Mbps over existing coax wires in consumer homes. MoCA 1.1 also includes an increase in network size from the current eight nodes to 16 nodes.



The new net throughput number is a significant increase over MoCA's previously stated performance metric of 100 Mbps.



The MoCA Alliance, which promotes the technology, said numerous applications would benefit from the upgraded standard, including:

• Whole house distribution of HD video, audio, data, gaming, and voice content;
  
  
• Whole home networking of CATV STB, DBS STB, ATSC STB, and FTTP STB functionality as an add-on to existing methods of distribution or as a replacement for existing methods of distribution;
  
  
• Home networking backbone for consumer electronics technologies (wireless, Ethernet/IP, IEEE-1394);
  
  
• Set top boxes that can receive both premium content and personal content;

TANDBERG Television, part of the Ericsson Group, is showcasing its iPlex UltraCompression IPTV video processing platform and debuting new high performance integrated transcoding capabilities. The new iPlex UltraCompression transcoder supports multi-format MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC SD and HD input streams and uses TANDBERG Television's next generation AVC platform to transcode them to either MPEG-4 AVC SD or HD output.



Up to 4 UltraCompression transcoders are supported in the 1RU iPlex video processing platform. TANDBERG Television said its iPlex video processing platform ensures the integrity of metadata in the transport streams (closed captioning, teletext etc.) and maximizes the performance of lip sync issues with subtitles. Additionally, when used in conjunction with bulk descrambling receivers, the iPlex transcoding architecture reduces the cost of the overall head-end design and improves video quality. It converts an incoming HD or SD MPEG-2 transport stream to digital baseband, avoiding the composite video interconnection common in multi-box approaches, performs pre-processing for picture and compression optimization, and then encodes the stream into MPEG-4 AVC on a single submodule. The integrated design allows for increased signal processing control, in turn significantly increasing the compression performance. Also, ancillary data such as Teletext and Closed Captions is left intact, allowing the solution to conform with country-specific requirements.
