Verizon Business Extends Cloud Services with VMware

Verizon Business is testing VMware's vSphere virtualization platform to expand its Computing as a Service (CaaS) portfolio.
Specifically, Verizon's CaaS enabled by VMware's vCloud Datacenter solution will allow enterprises to decide which applications to move to the cloud so they can react more quickly to changing business conditions. This would enable companies to pay only for IT resources consumed (server, connectivity, storage) while delivering the levels of security, performance and control available in private cloud environments. Additionally, with Verizon's new compute service, enterprises utilizing the VMware platform can leverage their existing infrastructure, tool and skill sets without changing their underlying IT setup.

Kerry Bailey, Verizon Business senior vice president for enterprise strategy, said, "With this latest addition to our cloud computing portfolio, our enterprise clients can now trial the unmatched flexibility of our new hybrid cloud solution, which builds on our relationship with VMware to deliver a new, innovative service while leading the industry to an 'everything-as-a-service' model."

"The relationship between VMware and Verizon will bring the full benefits of hybrid cloud computing and IT as a service to our customers," said Paul Maritz, president and CEO, VMware. "The new Verizon service based on VMware vCloud™ Datacenter enables enterprises to improve efficiency and agility by leveraging internal and external resources in a fully compatible, compliant and flexible manner, developed and certified together by VMware and Verizon."http://www.verizon.com

Singapore's Next Gen Nationwide Broadband Network Launches

Singapore's Next Gen Nationwide Broadband Network (NGNBN) officially began commercial operations.
Under the NBN structure established by Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) in 2008, the NetCo (OpenNet) is responsible for deploying fiber and maintaining the passive infrastructure while the OpCo (Nucleus Connect) is responsible for the active network and for delivering wholesale services to Retail Service Providers (RSPs). A structural separation is maintained to ensure an open next gen network.

OpenNet, Singapore's Optical Fibre Network Company, which is now offering commercial dark fibre leases, said that to date, the optical fibre cable rollout has already passed through 30% of households and non-residential buildings in Singapore. OpenNet is a joint venture between four partners -- Axia NetMedia (Axia), Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SP Telecommunications (SPT).

Nucleus Connect, which is responsible for designing, building and operating the active portion of Singapore's NGNBN, announced the first five Retail Service Providers (RSPs) who will go live on the network: LGA, M1, Singtel, StarHub and SuperInternet. Nucleus Connect is installing GPON and Optical Ethernet equipment for the last mile connection. The company said businesses and home owners can look forward to pervasive, competitively priced, broadband speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Some of the initial services expected from these RSPs include ultra-speed Internet access, IPTV, HD video surveillance and HD digital signage applications.

"Today marks a historical moment not only for Nucleus Connect but also for Singapore's infocomm future as we transform Singapore into a global city, an intelligent nation," said Mr David Storrie, Chief Executive Officer of Nucleus Connect.

  • In September 2009, Nucleus Connect selected Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei Technologies as its primary vendors.

  • The government of Singapore has previously stated that it expects broadband rates of up to 1 Gbps to be offered to 95% of residences by December 2012

Dell'Oro: Weakness in the Microwave Transmission Market

The point-to-point microwave equipment market experienced a second consecutive quarter of decline in what is typically a seasonally strong quarter, as it dipped to a little over $1 billion during the second quarter of 2010, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. The report indicates that Ericsson continued to hold the largest market share in the quarter, trailed closely by Huawei. Huawei gained 5 percentage points of market share year-over-year, garnering the second highest microwave revenue in the second quarter. Alcatel-Lucent rounded out the top three vendors with steady growth in its packet microwave product.

"We noticed the microwave market slowing down during the first quarter of the year, but believed that it could improve in the second quarter with the help of seasonal spending which is common in the telecom equipment market," said Jimmy Yu, Sr. Director of Microwave Transmission research at Dell'Oro Group. "Instead, we found the second quarter was overcome by factors that weakened it: a volatile euro-to-US dollar exchange rate, decelerating purchases by a WiMAX operator, and deployment delays due to a new government security requirement in India," Yu added."http://www.ericsson.com

Motorola Tunes its Remote Mgt for Multi-Screen Digital Homes

Motorola Mobility is introducing a new "EDGE" Service Assurance Software Suite for activating, provisioning, maintaining and supporting all broadband services in multi-screen digital homes.

Motorola's EDGE Manager remote management software platform (formerly Motorola NBBS) is a multi-protocol management solution that supports Broadband Forum's TR-069, SNMP, OMA-DM,WIB, Telnet and HTTP DL Server protocols.

This provides operators with expanded visibility into a range of consumer equipment (including Motorola and third-party modems, gateways, set-tops and mobile devices) and enables them to manage those devices' usage and performance parameters from a single control point. It also integrates into operator's existing OSS and billing systems.

F5 Integrates with VMware vCloud Director for "Cloudbursting"

F5 Networks introduced a solution developed in conjunction with VMware that enables enterprises to more easily augment the capacity of their data centers with external cloud resources -- a process called "cloudbursting".

The solution ties F5's BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager and its BIG-IP Global Traffic Manager with VMware vCloud Director and the VMware vCloud API to monitor application response times and apply business policies that can augment local resources with on-demand cloud-based resources when predetermined thresholds are met. The solution also relies on GemStone SQLFabric for distributed synchronization of database objects between the sites.

VBrick Wins U.S. Patent for Real-Time Video Compression

VBrick Systems has been awarded U.S. patent No. 7,751,482 for its real-time, encoding algorithms used during the compression of streaming video. VBrick said the issue faced when compressing streaming video is how to best optimize the quality of the final image given its real-time nature. In a typical real-time encoder, there is limited CPU power to efficiently compress incoming video streams. VBrick's patented technology, which specifically addresses the challenge of motion estimation, supports the delivery of high quality video (up to 1080p) while minimizing delay. Motion estimation is the most challenging and compute-intensive aspect of the H.264 algorithm.
