Leading Chinese mobile operators join GSMA Open Gateway Initiative

China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom have joined the GSMA Open Gateway Initiative, which helps developers and cloud providers collaborate with mobile operators through a framework of open network Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs),

The Open Gateway APIs aim to provide universal access to operator networks across all continents spanning from North America to Australia, Norway to Argentina.

At a joint signing ceremony ahead of MWC Shanghai, the three operators China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom demonstrated their commitment to collaborate on the open network API framework, meaning the initiative is now supported by 29 mobile network operators, representing around 60% of mobile connections worldwide.

The global initiative, which launched with eight proofs of concept in February, has already grown to 23. The APIs developed through early adopter programmes cover everything from device location and SIM swap to combat online financial crime, through to Quality on Demand to deliver more immersive gaming experiences and enable drones to carry out data intensive missions safely.

Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA, said, “Around the world, we’re gaining critical mass from east to west, north to south. China represents the largest 5G market in the world, so having China’s three largest operators committed to this initiative demonstrates its global significance and the strong business case it offers. In the same way we helped harmonise mobile voice services and enable roaming 35 years ago, I believe GSMA Open Gateway offers the potential to deliver similar levels of significant change for digital services.”

“This is just the beginning, with operators already launching early adopter programmes, we will see more APIs in the coming year, creating new global markets, offering new services and new functionality. This will help unlock further value from 5G connectivity which will flow into the global economy and strengthen future investments, bringing transformational benefits of connectivity to all,” said Granryd.

NTIA announces state allocations for $42.45 billion in BEAD grants

The Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced how it has allocated funding to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five territories to deploy high-speed Internet to all addresses that are currently unserved.

The funding, a component of the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, totals $42.5 billion in eligible grants.

The announcement was made at a White House ceremony attended by the President, Vice President, and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, along with other dignitaries.

"This is a watershed moment for millions of people across America who lack access to a high-speed Internet connection. Access to Internet service is necessary for work, education, healthcare, and more,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communication and Information Alan Davidson. “States can now plan their Internet access grant programs with confidence and engage with communities to ensure this money is spent where it is most needed.”

“Put simply, high-speed Internet is a necessity in today’s society,” said Mitch Landrieu, Senior Advisor to the President and White House Infrastructure Coordinator. “Just like President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Rural Electrification Act made a historic investment in rural areas bringing electricity to nearly every home in America, President Biden and Vice President Harris are committed to leaving no community behind as we connect everyone in America to high-speed Internet.”

OFS optimizes TrueLase fiber for multi-kilowatt fiber lasers

OFS announced an improved performance TrueLase Yb 22/400-915-3kW, Ytterbium Doped Active Fiber developed for high-efficiency, reliable, multi-kilowatt fiber lasers.

The TrueLase fiber family uses TrueClad Low Index Polymer Coating, which has been specially developed for high reliability and performance.

OFS said its production processes at OFS, which are designed for long lengths, guarantee consistently high quality with the lowest tolerances and cost efficiency. Thanks to its compatibility with numerous fibers and components available on the market, the TrueLase Yb 22/400-915-3kW fiber allows laser manufacturers to build their own multi-kW fiber laser cavity's.

Phil Familletti, OFS Fiber Laser Product Manager, stated, "With the new TrueLase Yb 22/400-915-3kW double clad fiber, a user pumping using 915nm will be able to achieve over 3KW in a single fiber laser cavity." Mr. Familletti continued, "This is an exciting development and ideal tool for integrated high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers."
