Cisco to Acquire Jasper for IoT Service Platform - $1.4 Billion

Cisco agreed to acquire Jasper Technologies, which offers a cloud-based IoT service platform, for $1.4 billion in cash and assumed equity awards, plus additional retention based incentives.

Jasper, which is based in Santa Clara, California, enables the connectivity and management of any device -- from cars to jet engines to implanted pacemakers -- over the cellular networks of service providers.  The company said its Software as a Service (SaaS) platform connects devices on behalf of over 3,500 enterprise customers over the networks of 27 leading service providers and in over 100 countries.  Jasper has a predictable, recurring revenue business.

Cisco said the proposed acquisition enables it to offer a complete IoT solution that is interoperable across devices and works with IoT service providers, application developers and an ecosystem of partners. Cisco will continue to build upon the Jasper IoT service platform and add new IoT services such as enterprise Wi-Fi, security for connected devices, and advanced analytics to better manage device usage.

"I am excited about the opportunity for Cisco and Jasper to accelerate how customers recognize the value of the Internet of Things," said Chuck Robbins, Cisco Chief Executive Officer. "Together, we can enable service providers, enterprises and the broader ecosystem to connect, automate, manage, and analyze billions of connected things, across any network, creating new revenue streams and opportunities."

"IoT has become a business imperative across the globe. Enterprises in every industry need integrated solutions that give them complete visibility and control over their connected services, while also being simple to implement, manage and scale," said Jahangir Mohammed, Jasper Chief Executive Officer. "By coming together, Jasper and Cisco will help mobile operators and enterprises accelerate their IoT success."

Jasper CEO Jahangir Mohammed will run the new IoT Software Business Unit under Rowan Trollope, Cisco senior vice president and general manager, IoT and Collaboration Technology Group. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of fiscal year 2016, subject to customary closing conditions.

Deutsche Telekom Tests LTE Licensed-Assisted Access with Qualcomm

Deutsche Telekom (DT), in collaboration with Qualcomm, has conducted tests demonstrating LTE Licensed-Assisted Access' (LAA) ability to extend coverage and increase network capacity. The over-the-air trial was completed on November 20th, 2015, in Nuremberg, Germany after a three-week period of extensive measurement campaigns. The trial used LAA test equipment designed and deployed by Qualcomm Research, the R&D division of Qualcomm Technologies. Deutsche Telekom provided the licensed spectrum for the LTE anchor carrier augmented with 5 GHz unlicensed spectrum and used on a multiple node LAA test network deployed over Qualcomm Technologies' Nuremberg campus.

LAA extends the benefits of 4G LTE Advanced to unlicensed spectrum bands, and is one of the new features of LTE Advanced Pro standards being developed in 3GPP Release 13, which is expected to be ready in the first half of 2016. The aggregation of licensed and unlicensed spectrum is another step in the evolution of 4G LTE towards development of a unified 5G platform, envisioned to offer native support for aggregation of unlicensed spectrum right from the start.

"LAA is one of the key technologies that will help satisfy the increasing demand for data and better mobile connectivity," said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, chief technology officer, Deutsche Telekom. "The trial will help the wireless ecosystem and key stakeholders verify and experience the benefits of LAA first hand."

"This trial is an important milestone demonstrating how global LAA technology will soon provide enhanced consumer benefits to users in Europe," said Matt Grob, executive vice president and chief technology officer, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. "We are pleased to collaborate with Deutsche Telekom on testing and demonstrating technologies that will enhance mobile broadband."

Pluribus Networks Announces VCF Insight Analytics

Pluribus Networks introduced a new flow-based, client-server oriented business intelligence solution that can be deployed on any data center network – regardless of manufacturer – to provide the critical operational view of the data center network for deep insight into applications for performance monitoring, troubleshooting and enhancing the effectiveness of forensic analysis and security.
for the data center.

Pluribus VCF Insight Analytics application is available in two configurations:

  • A stand-alone application that can be deployed upon any server to take advantage of the Pluribus VCF data center network already in place.
  • A packaged offering with the high performance, high-fanout-port-density (up to 64x10GE) Pluribus F64 collector appliance, which can be used to realize flow-level monitoring within existing third-party network infrastructures.

Pluribus said its VCF Insight Analytics works in conjunction with existing VCF API interfaces available within all Pluribus Netvisor powered switches. VCF Insight Analytics uses these APIs to continuously extract the time-series metadata associated with every flow in progress throughout the entire fabric, and stores these in a data repository for future analysis. VCF Insight Analytics includes a real-time analytics engine and easy to use drill-down navigation scheme to allow any particular type of flow or individual event at any point in time to be located and/or studied.

“IT organizations have historically been hobbled by the lack of affordable network insight and associated metrics, and to date, traditional hardware-based monitoring solutions have been difficult to deploy and prohibitively expensive,” said Kumar Srikantan, CEO of Pluribus Networks. “As a result, we wanted to bring deep visibility at the application level to every network and make it available to every network manager. In short, VCF Insight Analytics provides instantaneous, intuitive and uncompromised understanding of the performance of your business as seen from the network layer itself.”

Ericsson Creates Industry Patent Licensing Platform for IoT

Ericsson has established a platform for licensing of standardized IoT technology to device manufacturers, spanning from autonomous cars to irrigation sensors.

The platform, operated by an independent company, will adopt a revenue sharing model for contributing companies and receive a mandate to license on behalf of the joining patent holders, aiming to simplify access to standardized technology.

The new platform will be headed by Kasim Alfalahi, who will leave his current role as Chief Intellectual Property Officer and Head of IPR & Licensing at Ericsson.

"We are initiating this market place following discussions with both wireless industry players and key players in industry verticals. This platform shows Ericsson's and my personal commitment to provide a solution that works to the benefit of all parts of the ecosystem," stated Alfalahi.
