TPACK Combines Packet Mapping and Switching

TPACK introduced its new Carrier Packet Mapper Engine, combining the
functionality of a 10 Gbps Ethernet over NG-SONET/SDH packet mapper and a carrier grade packet processor with traffic management. The device is
designed for cost-optimized MSPP and microMSPP as well as packet optical applications.



TPACK said its new TPWX3192 device takes advantage of the high logic
density and low power consumption of Altera's new line of Stratix III
FPGAs. Based on 65nm manufacturing processes, the Stratix III FPGAs
enable the TPWX3192 to accommodate the feature sets of both the TPACK TPX3100 20Gbps Carrier Packet Engine and the TPACK TPW192-S 10 Gbps NG-SONET/SDH Packet Mapper. This allows the full range of MEF defined Carrier Ethernet Services to be supported in a compact, single device solution.



Separately, TPACK announced a collaboration with Turin Networks on
Carrier Ethernet switching and transport solutions. The joint
development efforts are focused on connection-oriented Carrier Ethernet
as well as 10 Gbps layer 2 packet switching and traffic management. The
result is Turin Networks' recently introduced 10-Gigabit Ethernet
switching and transport modules for its flagship Traverse Multiservice
Transport Switch Product Family. Turin's Traverse scales from 1Mbps to
10Gbps, supporting MEF 9 and MEF 14-certified compliant Carrier Ethernet
services over SONET and SDH.

Huawei and Qualcomm See Big Gains in "VoIP over HSPA"

Huawei Technologies completed commercial technology test of "VoIP over HSPA" in Shanghai in conjunction with QUALCOMM. The companies describe the project as the first ALL IP end-to-end solution that is based on a commercial chipset and IMS-based system platform.



For the project, Huawei put IP voice into an HSPA transfer channel -- a technique it dubs "VoIP over HSPA". The testing uses Huawei's UMTS/HSPA and IMS systems, including all RNC (Radio Network Controller ) base and all IP transmission system and QUALCOMM's MSM7200 chipset solution.



Previously, Huawei has commercial tested "VoIP over CDMA", 'VoIP over WiMAX and 'VoIP over HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access)' and passed interoperability testing with IMS.



Huawei and QUALCOMM said their testing indicates that 'VoIP over HSPA' increases the traffic capability by 50% in comparison with traditional voice communications technologies. If the migration is from 'VoIP over HSPA+' the traffic capability can be increased by 100%. Enhanced features such as uplink interference cancellation will enable further gains, achieving almost three times the capacity compared to current R99 systems.

Ixia Tests 10 Gig Performance of HP ProCurve Switch

In a commissioned test, Ixia verified the performance of HP's ProCurve Networking enterprise core switch. The 8212zl switch was tested for quality and performance on both video and VoIP.

Ixia's Aptixia IxNetwork solution emulated an enterprise topology with the OSPF routing protocol to fully stress the 8212zl's control plane, and at the same time, with its 10 Gigabit Ethernet XM LAN Services Modules, used 14 Ixia ports that generated 10 GbE line-rate traffic to stress the 8212zl's data plane. The Ixia test ports emulated video on demand, VoIP and HTTP as well as FTP applications across 10,000 advertised OSPF routes from 350 OSPF neighbors to measure the end user's experience of overall service quality. This demonstrated a real converged environment running over the switch.

Overture Raises $12.3 Million for Carrier Ethernet Platforms

Overture Networks, a start-up based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, raised $12.3 million in Series C financing for its converged packet access platforms for Carrier Ethernet services.



Overture Networks develops network edge and aggregation systems that allow carriers to deploy uniform managed Carrier Ethernet services to every customer location, whether accessible over direct fiber, optical transport or copper. Overture's ISG platform is designed to deliver any mix of Ethernet and TDM service combinations. Interface options range from NxT1/E1 to Gigabit Ethernet.



Lehman Brothers Venture Partners, a new investor in Overture Networks, led the round with a total of $7 million. Current investors Morgenthaler Ventures, Intersouth Partners, TDF, Armada Ventures, Gray Ventures and other existing investors provided the remaining amount.

BigBand Trims Financial Guidance for Q3

Citing several technical and sales cycle factors, BigBand Networks revised downward its revenue outlook for the third quarter ending September 30, 2007. The company now expects to report revenue for the third quarter in the range of $35 to $39 million, which is below the company's previous guidance of $54 to $58 million.



Factos cited for the decline include a delay in revenue recognition for some switched digital video deployments due to a need for more software customization and integration than originally expected.



BigBand also experienced slowdown in Telco-TV revenue, as its major customer worked through some previously purchased inventory. Finally, the company experienced continued softness in its data business. As a result of lower revenue expectations, BigBand expects to report an operating loss for the third quarter of fiscal year 2007.



"While we believe the market for our video solutions continues to be strong and are confident in our roadmap for the long term, we are clearly disappointed in our execution this quarter," said Amir Bassan-Eskenazi, BigBand's chief executive officer.

Occam to Acquire Assets of Terawave -- GPON

Occam Networks agreed to acquire certain assets and to assume certain liabilities of Terawave Communications, an early developer of fiber to the business and fiber to the home technology. The transaction is expected to include:

• FSAN ITU G.984 GPON interoperable technology,


• Technology focused on GPON physical interfaces,


• Products and technology directed towards Metro Ethernet, and


• Technology license agreements to two leading silicon manufacturers: Ikanos Communications, Inc. and Mindspeed Technologies

Occam will pay Terawave $3.4 million in cash, forgive bridge financing of up to approximately $1.9 million and assume certain liabilities and purchase commitments.



Following the closing of the acquisition, Occam also intends to make employment offers to certain employees of Terawave , including members of Terawave's team of optical development and systems engineers, who have broad experience in fiber network products and deployments.

Warid Telecom Uganda Selects Motorola for WiMAX

Warid Telecom Uganda selected Motorola to design and deploy an 802.16e WiMAX network in Uganda. Initial deployment is due for completion by the end of 2007, enabling residential and enterprise voice and data connectivity services, including VoIP and VPNs. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Quellan Raises $20 Million for Analog Signal Processing and RF Noise Cancellation

Quellan, a start-up based in Santa Clara, California, closed $20 million in its Series C round of venture financing for its work in analog signal processing and RF noise cancellation.



Quellan recently announced a wide range of new product offerings including it's flagship QNx RF Noise Canceller product line for consumer and mobile product applications, the QHx Harmonic Suppressor for digital harmonic noise suppression, and the QLx product line for enterprise and data center applications.



"The noise cancellation opportunity has expanded to include consumer electronics, enterprise, mobile wireless, computing and automotive," said D. Tony Stelliga, President and CEO of Quellan.



New investors include W.L. Gore & Associates, Harbinger Venture Management, JAFCO, and Glynn Capital Management. These new investors join Menlo Ventures, Yamacraw Capital Seed Fund, Cordova Ventures, Samsung Ventures America, and VentureTech Alliance.



The company also announced that Robert C. Dobkin has made an investment in the company and has joined its Advisory Board. Separately, Quellan announced a strategic alliance with W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore), a global leader in electronic signal transmission. Cisco to Acquire Latigent for Web 2.0-based Contact Center

Cisco agreed to acquire Latigent, a provider of web-based business intelligence and analytics reporting for contact centers, for an undisclosed sum.



Latigent's product line consists of two main products: BlueVue is a Web-based business intelligence and analytics tool, and Archiver is an engine for integrating data from the entire enterprise into a consolidated and normalized repository. The products are designed to leverage Web 2.0 principles.



Cisco said Latigent's products will complement and enhance its Unified Customer Contact solutions.



Latigent was co-founded in 2002 by CEO Chris Crosby and CTO Jason Kolb, who will both join Cisco after the close of the acquisition. The company is based in Chicago.
