Rethink the IP Core, Part 6 - Cracking the Market

The core routing market is dominated by two incumbent vendors. What will it take for Alcatel-Lucent to crack open this market? Presented by Lindsay Newell, VP of Networks Marketing, Alcatel-Lucenthttp://www.alcatel-lucent.com

Cloud-connected Vending Machines Coming from Everything Everywhere and NSN

Everything Everywhere, the joint venture that operates the networks for T-Mobile (UK) and Orange (UK), is working with Nokia Siemens Networks to provide vending machine owners with remote stock monitoring, increased customer interaction and multiple payment methods. Through the international partnership, vending machines will be linked to Nokia Siemens Networks’ VendMe application and installed with Everything Everywhere SIM cards, connecting them to both the UK’s largest 3G network and France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom’s international footprint.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ VendMe application is a vending management tool hosted in the cloud, and managed and integrated through a coupling of the company’s Machine to Machine (M2M) platform, Cumulocity, and Everything Everywhere’s M2M Management Platform.http://everythingeverywhere.com http://www.nokiasiemensnetworks.com

NSN Sees up to 40% Data Capacity Gain with EV-DO Advanced

Nokia Siemens Networks introduced a set of EV-DO Advanced features for CDMA network operators that enable more efficient use of network resources. The company said new EV-DO Advanced software can increase data capacity by up to 40% in loaded cells thereby helping operators economically manage greater data traffic volumes, without the need for hardware investment.

"We are fully focused on technologies that enable a superior mobile broadband experience, and EV-DO Advanced is one such development. It is a major driver of CDMA evolution and adding this to our portfolio reflects our strong commitment to the technology standard," said Scott Mottonen, head of the CDMA/LTE business line, Nokia Siemens Networks.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ EV-DO Advanced software encompasses a number of features that increase network capacity. Those implemented include:

Network Load Balancing (NLB) reassigns mobile devices from heavily-loaded sectors to lightly-loaded sectors, to increase network capacity, reduce backhaul bottlenecks and improve data rates.

Smart Carrier Management maximizes data throughput and overall network capacity by assigning one or more carriers to a device (within the same cell or from an adjacent cell) if they are less loaded or offer better coverage.

Enhanced Connection Management optimizes device connections to the network depending on the type of application being used to improve signaling capacity and reduce latency. It includes new features that will enhance device performance and data speeds and extend battery life.

Other EV-DO Advanced features include:

Adaptive Frequency Reuse ensures seamless coverage by reducing the interference in a capacity-constrained cell so the primary carrier frequency operates optimally.

Distributed Network Scheduler prioritizes and allocates bandwidth to multiple users at a network level, to maximize overall network efficiency.

With Single Carrier Multilink, two carriers using the same frequency can serve a dual-antenna mobile device from different cells/sectors. The user device can thus achieve the benefits of a multicarrier network, even if the user moves to a single carrier network.

The following EV-DO Advanced features are embedded in the device, not in the infrastructure:

Enhanced Equalizers take advantage of uneven loading traffic to significantly increase cell-edge data throughput.

With Mobile Transmit Diversity (MTD), the mobile device uses an additional antenna to significantly increase reverse link sector capacity and improve user data rates at the cell edge.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ EV-DO Advanced software is commercially available and is currently being rolled out by a leading operator. In addition to the software, Nokia Siemens Networks also offers global expertise and a complete portfolio of services including consultancy, design and planning, systems integration, deployment, optimization, maintenance and managed services for CDMA networks. http://www.nokiasiemensnetworks.com

Infonetics: 450 Million LTE Subscribers by 2016

Mobile subscribers — including GSM, W-CDMA, LTE, TD-CDMA, cdmaOne, CDMA2000 — are forecast to pass the 6-billion mark in 2012, and to approach 7 billion by 2016, according to a new report from Infonetics.

Some highlights of the report:

  • Infonetics expects more than 200 million traditional voice access lines to get dropped over the next the 5 years as people continue to ‘cut the cord’

  • China Mobile, Vodafone, and América Móvil are the world’s top mobile operators by number of subscribers

  • The number of LTE subscribers is forecast by Infonetics to near 450 million by 2016

  • Despite some subscriber migration to TD-LTE, WiMAX subscribers are expected to grow at a 35% compound annual growth rate through 2016, when they will top 132 million

  • DSL continues to grow despite competition from cable, FTTH, and LTE, with DSL subscribers accounting for over 2/3 of all wireline broadband subscriptions in 2011.

"The number of mobile broadband subscribers jumped nearly 50% in 2011 to 846 million and we expect that number to reach 2.6 billion by 2016, driven by Brazil, Russia, India, China and others in the developing world,? notes Stéphane Téral, Infonetics Research’s principal analyst for mobile infrastructure and carrier economics. “We anticipate Asia Pacific to account for over half of the world’s mobile broadband subscribers by 2016, while Latin America will see the fastest growth."
