Aspen Rolls Out Wholesale WiMax Network in Dallas

Aspen Communications is rolling out WiMAX infrastructure in the Dallas and Fort Worth regions to support wireless broadband service providers beginning in mid-March.

Aspen has created an initial network of 12 buildings and towers (all having higher elevations and/or roof-tops to provide for a more expansive coverage area) and connected these sights with over 380 miles of fiber across Dallas and Fort Worth. The initial network rollout will use the Gigabit Ethernet protocol to provide up to 1000 Mbps speeds. They hope to have twice that many buildings online by fourth quarter 2006.

Aspen will offer a turn-key solution that includes back-haul, Internet access, network services, co-location, and WiMAX tower sites.

"In a few months, we will be able to deliver a 10 Mbps connection on a 300 foot tower in McKinney for under $1500 per month which is unheard of today," said Aspen's Sales & Marketing Director Rocky Ahmann.

Serbia Broadband Launches DTH Service with Scientific-Atlanta

Serbia Broadband - Srpske Kablovske Mreze (SBB), the country's largest cable operator, has chosen additional Scientific-Atlanta products and systems to create its DVB-S DTH (direct-to-home) headend and uplink. The carrier has already deployed hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) cable network using gear from Scientific-Atlanta.

will use Scientific-Atlanta encoders at several local Serbian broadcasters to create video streams for transport over an IP network to its new Scientific-Atlanta digital headend. There, the local content will be combined with popular programming channels for the new DTH service.

Scientific-Atlanta equipment will also provide multiplexing and transrating services to allow SBB to use transponder capacity efficiently. Scientific-Atlanta's iLynx platform will be used to connect the headend with the remote uplink site.

At the uplink site, Scientific-Atlanta is providing antennas, upconverters and amplifiers to deliver signals to the satellite. Wiring, installation and configuration for the entire transport, headend and uplink capabilities are being conducted by Scientific-Atlanta's systems integrator, professional services and consulting arm, SciCare EMEA Professional Services. Additionally, a ROSA network and management and control system in place to monitor the complete HFC network will be expanded to monitor the DTH operation.

Deutsche Telekom Readies VDSL/Fiber Rollout

Deutsche Telekom will launch its new fixed-line, broadband access network in ten German cities by the middle of the year - provided regulatory decisions are favorable -- said company CEO Kai-Uwe Ricke at a press event in Berlin.

The network architecture will use new fiber into neighborhoods and VDSL for the last link into customer homes.

Although the regulatory assurances are "still lacking," DT is planning to invest around EUR 3 billion to set up the broadband network in 50 German cities by the end of 2007. The company will invest around EUR 500 million up front for part of the rollout, until the regulatory situation is clarified. Under this first phase, T-Com will lay around 4,000 km of new fiber in ten cities and deploy 17,000 cable distributors. Altogether, T-Com needs to lay around 18,000 km of new fiber and install 74,000 cable distributors to cover the whole country.

Ricke said the network will deliver 50 Mbps services and lead to fundamental changes in areas such as e-health, e-learning and e-work. It will support T-Online's IPTV services. Initial field trials have been completed. The initial service aims to deliver around 100 free and pay-TV channels, along with on-demand video.

The company is also preparing to launch its "T-Mobile@Home" fixed-mobile-convergence service. The Dual Phone lets users make calls over the fixed-network while at home, over the mobile network while on the go, and via WLAN HotSpot whenever possible.

At the upcoming CeBIT, T-Mobile plans to introduce its UMTS service with DSL-like speeds (1.8 Mbps).

DT plans to launch "t-info" -- a nationwide, local search engine.

DT will provide state-of-the-art communications for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
