ICC Enters Market for SMB Networking

International Communications Corporation (ICC), a start-up based in Riverside, California, made its launch into the market for networking equipment in small and medium-sized businesses with up to 500 employees. The company has set its sights on "how packets are processed in the network" and not merely connectivity.

ICC's icXchange family of connectivity solutions includes WLAN mobility, Ethernet switches, Unified Communication, business gateways, and technology partnerships for video assurance technology. The company said it is pursuing technologically-differentiated solutions aimed at optimizing content delivery. Its initial Mobility Wireless Controller, for instance, leverages advanced QoS remarking between IEEE802.11e and both IEEE802.1p and DiffServ to allow end-to-end quality-of-service connectivity path for any network traffic. ICC will also use integrated bandwidth shaping, content tagging and special policing in its WLAN solution to offer high performance in its line of 802.11n access points. The initial Ethernet switches include 26- and 50-port Layer-2 Gigabit products, some with PoE capabilities.

“Our focus is to transform connectivity networks into intelligent environments that more aggressively direct communication traffic and create efficiency and sustainability in SMB and small enterprise networks up to 500 users,? stated Keith Alexis, chief executive officer at ICC.

ICC is pursuing a reseller distribution strategy in the U.S. and Canada. ICC will also launch in EMEA and Asia in early 2012.

FCC Tests Telcordia's Television White Space Database

Telcordia announced the its Television White Space Database solution will be tested by the FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) in a 45 day public trial beginning this week. The Telcordia White Space Database allows provides a list of available channels that TV Bands White Space devices can use based on their location.

Telcordia said its White Space Database will also be able to register other FCC-protected sites, such as MVPD receive sites, broadcast auxiliary temporary receive sites, or wireless microphones. http://www.telcordia.com

  • In September 2011, the FCC conducted a public test of Spectrum Bridge's TV band database system.

  • In September 2010, The FCC issued an order that opens up vacant airwaves between TV channels for new unlicensed applications such as "super Wi-Fi." Specifically, a Second Memorandum Opinion and Order (Second MO&O) resolves numerous legal and technical issues regarding unlicensed spectrum usage. Notably, the Order eliminates the requirement that TV bands devices that incorporate geo-location and database access must also include sensing technology to detect the signals of TV stations and low-power auxiliary service stations (wireless microphones). It also requires wireless microphone users who seek to register in the TV bands databases to certify that they will use all available channels from 7 through 51 prior to requesting registration. Requests to register in the database will be public, thus allowing interested parties to weigh in on any given request.

  • In June 2011, Ericsson agreed to acquire Telcordia for US$1.15 billion in cash.

IEEE Investigates EPON over Coax

The IEEE has launched a study group to investigate a new PHY (Physical Layer) standard for operating the Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) protocol transparently over coaxial distribution networks. The goal would be to use IEEE 802.3 Ethernet specifications to significantly boost and broaden the capabilities of Ethernet in existing access networks.

IEEE 802.3 EPON specifications include symmetric data rates of 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps, as well as asymmetric data rates of 10 Gbps downstream and 1 Gbps upstream.

“Operating EPON transparently over coax is a significant step forward. It will help to transform the industry by greatly simplifying operator networks while simultaneously offering subscribers easy and efficient access to dramatically increased bandwidth,? said Howard Frazier, chair, IEEE 802.3 EPoC Study Group and senior technical director, Broadcom Corporation. “The ability to leverage existing Ethernet infrastructures and cable plant investments while offering a ten-fold increase in data speeds is revolutionary.?

Vitesse Debuts "Serval" Switch Engine for Mobile Backhaul

Vitesse Semiconductor unveiled its "Serval" Carrier Ethernet switching silicon optimized for power and cost-sensitive applications at the network edge. The new line of devices adds to Vitesse's portfolio of previously announced Jaguar, LynX and Caracal solutions for Carrier access, aggregation, and mobile applications.

The first of the new Serval chips offers nine 10/100/1000 Mbps SGMII/SerDes ports and two 2.5G SGMII/SerDes ports. It supports MPLS/MPLS-TP LER and LSR and IEEE 1588v2, making it suitable for mobile backhaul including LTE-Advanced applications. An embedded 416 MHz MIPS processor supports timing over packet and injection of advanced data flows for service activation measurement (SAM) testing. Serval also provides Ethernet Operations, Administration & Maintenance (OAM) and performance monitoring (IEEE 802.1ag, ITU-T Y.1731, ITU-T Y.1564). It includes hierarchical QoS, i.e. multi-stage scheduling, policing, and traffic shaping. It also provides the ability to separate subscriber types with per subscriber queuing.

Unlike competing products which are downsized versions of larger Ethernet switches, the eleven port size of the Vitesse Serval offers 3 watt typical power dissipation, enabling it to be used in a variety of energy efficient fiber, microwave and millimeter-wave backhaul equipment, as well as wireline network edge devices.

For microwave backhaul, Serval delivers a Vitesse patented feature set for Transparent Clock support.

Samples of the Serval VSC7418 are available this month.

"Power is one of the highest OPEX considerations in many emerging regional networks, such as China and India. Compared to competitive ASSP and NPU-based solutions which range from 6-15W, Serval delivers the industry's richest Carrier feature set for access-edge applications at less than 3W," said Uday Mudoi, director of product marketing at Vitesse. "With Carriers trending towards small micro and pico cells to add network capacity, Serval is ideal for this burgeoning application. Additionally, with its industrial temperature range support, Serval enables a variety of outdoor and fanless designs, such as microwave backhaul enclosures and 1U Ethernet access device systems." http://www.vitesse.com http://www.vitesse.com/products/product.php?number=VSC7418

Symantec Launches Mobile Security Assessment Service

Symantec introduced a suite of Mobile Security Assessment services to help enterprises evaluate their mobile security postures and develop defenses against mobile threats and vulnerabilities.

The Symantec Mobile Security Assessment Suite provides a vendor neutral evaluation of current mobile usage and threats by enterprises as their employees increasing access network resources via mobile devices and over third party links. It consists of two modules; one for holistic assessment of enterprise mobile security, and one specifically focused on mobile application security.

“When it comes to implementing mobile technology, enterprises are being thrown into the fire,? said Clint Sand, senior director of the Security Business Practice at Symantec. “Enterprises know that security is the main impediment for broader adoption of mobility, but with all the changes in operating systems and applications, IT managers are unclear on how to comprehensively address the security challenges. We want to help these organizations with an assessment of their security posture and make recommendations on the best ways to embrace BYOD.?http://www.symantec.com

Qualcomm Life Tackles Wireless Medical Device Connectivity

Qualcomm has formed an independent subsidiary to pursue the opportunity for medical device connectivity.

Qualcomm Life is developing the technology-agnostic, "2net" platform for linking medical devices with cloud-based data centers. The idea is to capture biometric data, encrypt it and then transmit it via a smartphone or 2net home gateway device to customer-designated healthcare providers. Qualcomm Life said it plans to work with multiple carriers to transmit data according to HIPAA regulations. The company said it already has 40 customers and collaborators either integrating with or considering the 2net ecosystem.

In addition, a $100 million Qualcomm Life Fund has been established to support the ecosystem. The fund will be managed by Qualcomm Ventures, its investment arm. http://www.qualcommlife.com/
