COLT Deploys Infinera for Pan-European Network

COLT, a leading European provider of business communications, has deployed an Infinera Digital Optical Network for its pan-European network. COLT operates a 13-country, 25,000km network that includes metropolitan area networks in 34 major European cities with direct fiber connections into 16,000 buildings and 18 COLT data centres. The first phase of COLT's Infinera network connects major cities in eight countries in the business heart of Europe, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy.

Infinera said the first phase of the COLT network was deployed in just three months, significantly faster than the time required by a traditional DWDM network. Based on Infinera's large-scale photonic integrated circuits, the Infinera DTN optical system uses fewer line cards and fewer cables, simplifying and speeding up the initial deployment process. In addition, Infinera's GMPLS-powered IQ network operating system supports rapid deployment with intelligent features like automatic recognition and inventorying of network assets.

GigOptix Enables Sub 1W for 120 Gbps Parallel Optics Links

GigOptix reported error-free 10 Gbps optical links over 100m of multi-mode fiber (MMF) operating with less than 81mW per channel or 8mW/Gb/s. These links used ‘off the shelf' 850 nm O/E components and GigOptix's HXT/R4 series of multichannel VCSEL driver and receiver arrays with a single power supply.

GigOptix said this technology demonstration represents a major step in parallel optics solutions as it will enable 12 channel links used in SNAP12, CXP, for and 100GBASE-SR10 standards to achieve sub 1W power dissipation.

Commercially available 12 channel parallel optics modules operating at 6.25Gb/s per channel offer an aggregate bandwidth of 75 Gbps with power consumption of 53mW/Gbps or in the range of 300mW per channel. GigOptix 10 Gbps solution offers 120 Gbps and results demonstrate more than 6 x improvement over the previous generations with a single power supply.

Voltaire Releases Massive 40 Gbps InfiniBand Director Switch

Voltaire announced the general availability of its Grid Director 4700, a 40 Gbps InfiniBand director switch featuring a choice of 324 or 648 ports.

Double-density fabric boards are the basis for Voltaire's "HyperScale" architecture. Using Grid Director 4700 switches with HyperScale architecture, a customer can build a 1,296 node supercomputer. The company said its fabric delivers 20% lower latency than alternative solutions while consuming 50% fewer switch ports, 40% fewer cables and 33% less power and rack-space.

The 19U high Grid Director 4700 has less than 300 nanosecond port-to-port latency to accelerate performance of applications running on server and storage scale-out fabrics. The switch runs a smart distributed software architecture that delivers the best signal quality, enhanced performance optimization, and better resiliency, which are all key challenges in large-scale deployments. Moreover, its low 6.5-watts-per-port power consumption makes the switch a greener choice for energy-efficient data centers.

Open Patent Alliance Issues Call for WiMAX Patents

The Open Patent Alliance (OPA), a group dedicated to offering intellectual property rights (IPR) solutions that support the development and widespread adoption of WiMAX, today announced a call for patents, with the intention of creating a patent pool of essential WiMAX patents. The OPA has selected Via Licensing Corporation to facilitate the formation and administration of the pool on behalf of the OPA.

OPA said an independent third-party reviewer or "patent evaluator" will evaluate submitted patents to determine whether or not they are essential. Any entity that believes it has patents or pending patent applications that are essential to WiMAX is invited to contact Via Licensing to receive information about how to submit patents for essentiality review by the independent patent evaluator.

"Today's patent call is a major milestone in our quest to create an innovative and truly open WiMAX ecosystem," said OPA President Yung Hahn. "Through the patent pool approach, not only will the OPA be able to drive down the costs of adopting WiMAX, we will be able to create a more predictable cost structure that can be accessed by infrastructure vendors, device manufacturers and application developers worldwide."

OPA members include Acer, Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, Cisco, Clearwire, Huawei Technologies, Intel Corporation, and Samsung Electronics, as well as newly announced associate members Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Sequans, and UQ Communications, underscoring broad 4G ecosystem support - from semiconductors to consumer devices to service providers.

New National WiMAX Operator in Russia Gets Funding

Icon Private Equity, one of the largest investment funds in Russia, announced plans to invest $200 million into the development of a new national WiMAX operator. New networks will be deployed in the "digital divide" regions, where broadband internet availability is presently insufficient. The fund plans to launch the operator's commercial services by October 2009 and intends to cover a population of 20 million by the end of 2009. The service will be offered to both individual subscribers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The operator company will capitalize on both the growth of internet usage in Russia's regions, and its ability to bring to market easy-to-use WiMAX wireless products - similar in price and quality to fixed-line products.

Icon said this investment is a part of its broader strategy of becoming the major WiMAX operator across the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a strategy that has already seen the group invest $100 million in UHT, a WiMAX operator in Ukraine.

Huawei Technologies Ltd was awarded a contract for supply of the equipment for the new network. Additional funding for network deployment will be provided in a form of loans from China's leading financial institutions.
