Motorola Unveils DOCSIS 3.0 CPE

Motorola unveiled its line of DOCSIS 3.0-based customer premises equipment (CPE) designed to work with the Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS platform and other DOCSIS 3.0-qualified CMTS industry solutions. Motorola has announced several pre-DOCSIS 3.0 commercial deployments to date.

Motorola said it is supporting all DOCSIS 3.0 features, including channel bonding, IPv6, and advanced encryption services. The modems enable channel bonding of up to four downstream channels and four upstream channels, which allows an operator to offer their customers advanced multimedia services with data throughput approximating 160 Mbps in DOCSIS mode and 195 Mbps in Euro-DOCSIS mode -- all without upgrading the HFC plant.

The new line up includes:

  • Motorola SB6120 SURFboard Cable Modem -- supports data throughput approximating 160 Mbps in DOCSIS mode and 195 Mbps in Euro-DOCSIS mode, without the need for a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) plant upgrade. It supports all DOCSIS 3.0 standards including channel bonding, both IPv4 and IPv6, and advanced encryption services.

  • Motorola SBV6120 SURFboard Digital Voice Modem -- Builds on the SB6120 and offers up to two lines of full-featured digital voice service.

  • Motorola SBV6220 SURFboard Digital Voice Modem -- Builds on the SBV6120 and offers Lithium-ion battery backup, which can provide backup power during a power outage.

Motorola's DOCSIS 3.0 SURFboard CPE can be self-installed through the product's intuitive rear panel icon and color coding connection guide. Troubleshooting is simplified via the product's front-panel operational status LEDs. Operators can also optionally activate dual-colored LEDs for their customer to have visual verification of bonded channels and GigE link use.

Motorola's DOCSIS 3.0 CPE line is also designed for Service Assurance -- Quality of Service (QoS) at the edge of the network -- and is compatible with Motorola's NBBS Device Management Platform and with Motorola's eCare web-enabled interactive support solution.http://business.motorola.com/ultrabroadbandsolutions/home.html

DOCSIS
3.0, Raising the Standard

DOCSIS 3.0 ushers in an era of

ABA Net Employs Global Crossing VoIP Pseudo Carrier Identification Code (CIC) Service

ABA Net, a long-distance telecommunications service provider, is using a new complementary capability to Global Crossing Carrier Outbound VoIP Service to provide voice service for ABA Net's customers in the United States.

This new capability, called Global Crossing VoIP Pseudo Carrier Identification Code (CIC) Service, improves the hand-off of switched access calls that are transported on the Global Crossing network. This is done by using a Session Internet Protocol (SIP)-based interconnection. Once a VoIP Pseudo CIC call is received, customers have the option to use Global Crossing Carrier VoIP Outbound Service to deliver the call to its destination.http://www.globalcrossing.comhttp://www.abanet.us/

Bookham Introduces Ultra Small 40 Gbps Mach Zehnder Modulator Chip

Bookham announced a 40 Gbps Optical Differential Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (ODQPSK) modulator chip implemented through proprietary indium phosphide Mach Zehnder (InP MZ) technology. Bookham plans to combine this functionality with its tunable laser in new products specifically for use in the growing 40 Gbps market.

Bookham said the reduced size InP MZ platform (5mm) will allow it to offer 40 Gbps products in smaller footprints compared to existing 40 Gbps offerings employing larger optics.http://www.bookham.com

Corning and Infinera to Demo Unamplified Reach of 320km

Corning and Infinera will co-host two long-haul network demonstrations at next week's OFC/NFOEC conference in San Diego.

The first demonstration will show how to significantly reduce amplification requirements and the expenses associated with building and maintaining amplifier huts. In the demonstration, Infinera's Digital Optical Networks technology will transmit and receive data over 320 kilometers (km) of Corning SMF-8 ULL fiber to demonstrate extended network reach that can eliminate two or three amplification sites traditionally required in a network with 80 or 100 kilometer spans. The long-reach capability results from the combined benefits of Infinera's Raman amplification and the ultra-low attenuation of SMF-28 ULL fiber.

Corning and Infinera will also demonstrate lower-cost dispersion compensation equipment. The Infinera DTN will transmit over six 100 kilometer spans of Corning LEAF fiber with no in-line dispersion compensation. Link dispersion compensation is achieved through a single dispersion compensation module and advanced electronic dispersion compensation in the receiver terminal on the Infinera line card. Due to the optimized dispersion of LEAF fiber, in-line dispersion compensation is not required.http://www.corning.comhttp://www.infinera.com
