Sprint Nextel Reaches 54 Million Mobile Users

Sprint Nextel added 400,000 mobile users in Q2, giving it a total of 54 million, up 5% from a year ago. Consolidated net operating revenues of $10.2 billion in the second quarter were 2% above the year-ago period and increased 1% sequentially. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations was 1 cent, compared to 10 cents in the second quarter of 2006, and a loss of 7 cents per share in the first quarter of 2007.

Some highlights:

  • Post-paid subscribers increased by 16,000, reflecting a gain in CDMA subscribers, offset by a decline in iDEN subscribers.

  • At the end of the quarter, the company served 41.6 million post-paid subscribers, including 25.3 million on CDMA, 15.5 million on iDEN and 850,000 PowerSource users who access both platforms.

NEC Launches UC for Businesses

NEC Unified Solutions, launched a "UC for Business" (UCB) solution that merges contact center functionality with unified messaging, mobility and desktop telephony applications. The solution combines NEC's call center features with unified messaging, mobility and desktop telephony applications. NEC said its UCB provides rich presence, mobility and real-time communication management via the following:

  • Mobility: enables users to remain connected to vital resources while working remotely. A single repository for address book information and messages can be accessed through phone, Outlook Web Access or Lotus iNotes.

  • Rich Presence: provides the ability to view detailed status information, and can distribute notifications when a specific user is available. With the optional integrated Outlook feature, calendar appointments and scheduling information can be viewed with access to global, personal and Outlook contacts through one-touch dialing. Presence profiles based on appointments can be scheduled through the Outlook calendar.

  • Contact Center Management: UC for Business supports multimedia queuing of phone, fax, email, Short Message Service (SMS), chat and Web contacts. Incoming volume is managed through integrated inbound and outbound queuing and UCB ensures any overflow is prioritized and sent directly to an agent. Administrators can view the status of queues in real-time or with customizable reporting.

The solution is currently available through NEC's dealer network, including NEC's UNIVERGE Solutions Partner Program of more than 150 global partners.

Vodafone Iceland Deploys Allot's NetEnforcer

Vodafone Iceland has deployed Allot Communications' service optimization solution to ensure Quality of Experience (QoE) both residential and corporate subscribers. Allot's NetEnforcer devices providing DPI-based real-time monitoring are installed on their peering links. The carrier has observed that traffic surges were being caused by a relatively small number of heavy users, consuming vast quantities of bandwidth for recreational use. Reports generated by the Allot NetXplorer Reporter confirmed P2P applications were responsible for 60% of inbound traffic, and 80% of outbound traffic. Vodafone's operations were able to deploy policies to alleviate the congestion and guarantee the maximum QoE to all subscribers on the network at all times. http://www.allot.com/

Nokia Adopts New Silicon Strategy

Nokia will expand its use of commercially available chipsets,
adopt a multisourcing model, and discontinue some of its in-house silicon development efforts. Nokia said this new silicon strategy enables it to focus on its core competence in modem technology and invest in R&D areas besides radio technology, such as in software to power internet services.

Nokia will continue to develop its modem technology, which includes protocol software and related digital design for WCDMA/GSM and its evolution. Nokia will then license this modem technology to its chipset manufacturers, who will use it in the chipsets they develop and produce for Nokia and - if they so decide - in the chipsets they produce for the open market.

Nokia is now working with four chipset suppliers. Texas Instruments continues to be a broad scope supplier across all protocols, Broadcom has been chosen as a supplier in EDGE, Infineon Technologies as a supplier in GSM, and STMicroelectronics as a supplier in 3G.

Nokia and STMicroelectronics are negotiating a plan relating to transferring a part of Nokia's Integrated Circuit (IC) operations to STMicroelectronics. The transfer is anticipated to concern approximately 200 Nokia employees in Finland and the UK, and it is estimated to take place during the fourth quarter 2007. Nokia has also awarded ST a design win of an advanced 3G HSPA chipset supporting high data rates, which would be the first contribution of the acquired IC design operations. This design win represents ST's first win of a complete 3G chipset.

Nokia has selected Broadcom's advanced single-chip cellular baseband processor and its companion power management unit (PMU) for selected future EDGE mobile phones. Broadcom's "Venus" single-chip EDGE multimedia processor uses 65 nanometer CMOS process technology and integrates an EDGE RF transceiver. http://www.nokia.com

Nokia Siemens Networks Supports 700 MHz Spectrum

Nokia Siemens Networks announced its support for the 700 MHz spectrum band that will be auctioned by the FCC in early 2008, describing it as a unique opportunity for mobile broadband.

Nokia Siemens Networks is positioned to support the 700 MHz band with its flagship Flexi platform for radio access networks. The Flexi is a base station platform featuring a modular design capable of supporting various wireless technologies at new radio frequencies. This includes GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA, and WiMAX and in the future will support Long-term Evolution (LTE).

In addition to WCDMA/HSPA, Nokia Siemens Networks is developing Internet-HSPA, a pre-LTE flat network architecture based on the 3GPP Release 7 flat network architecture option that is compatible with HSPA devices and provides an optimized transition to LTE. Internet-HSPA is an option for broadband wireless high speed data delivery with a flat all-IP architecture.
