Nokia Siemens Networks and Pirelli Broadband Cooperate on 3G Femtocells

Nokia Siemens Networks and Pirelli Broadband Solutions signed an agreement for cooperation on 3G Femto Home Access solutions. The deal matches Pirelli's femto-enabled CPEs with Nokia Siemens Networks' 3G Femto Home Access network solution. Femtocells are a new way of improving 3G coverage in homes. In this concept, the CPE is installed at the subscriber's home in the same way as xDSL/WiFi modem.


The companies said their combined solution means an opportunity for operators to extend their 3G coverage and introduce new attractive services for subscribers.


The Pirelli Multiplay CPE portfolio will offer 3G femtocell functionality integrated with diverse broadband access technologies (ADSL2+, VDSL2 and FTTH) and with Pirelli's Epicentro CPE middleware and applications platform. Alcatel-Lucent and Quantum SpA, a supplier of mobile multimedia devices and software, agreed to collaborate in the Mobile TV market. The companies will develop terrestrial or hybrid (terrestrial and satellite) mobile broadcast solutions adhering to the new DVB-SH mobile broadcast standard.


DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting -- Satellite services to Handhelds) is an evolution of DVB-H that can be used in any frequency spectrum below 3GHz, including UHF, L band and S band, in terrestrial, satellite or hybrid networks. Thomson Reuters Selects BT for WAN Outsourcing

Thomson Reuters awarded an eight-year outsourcing contract to BT to manage the WAN element of its internal IT infrastructure.

Under the deal, BT will transform Thomson Reuters' existing WAN into a high-speed, IP based global infrastructure that will encompass 323 locations across 100 countries including six applications hosting data centers.


The win follows a 10 year plus deal BT reached with Reuters in 2005 to transform and manage the global network Thomson Reuters uses to deliver services to more than 330,000 financial market professionals across the world.

Wisair's Wireless USB Chip Gains Korean Regulatory Certification

Wisair's Wireless USB solution was approved for distribution in Korea by the Radio Research Laboratory (RRL), the certification body under the Korean Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC). The Wisair solution approved for operation in Korea includes a Wireless USB adapter, and is based on the Wisair WSR601 CMOS single chip. Wisair's WSR601 technology is currently in production with several ODM partners with shipments to end consumers expected towards the end of this quarter.

CableLabs Signs Tru2way Branding License with Samsung

CableLabs and Samsung announced a new "tru2way" license agreement that provides consumer electronics device manufacturers a streamlined license for their retail products to interface to 2-way interactive cable networks. Samsung Electronics is the first consumer electronics manufacturer to sign this new agreement.


The agreement consolidates, clarifies, and provides an alternative to the existing CableCARD-Host Interface License Agreement (CHILA), and the OpenCable Application Platform Implementer Agreement. Intelsat and Panasonic to Offer In-Flight Broadband Service

Intelsat and Panasonic Avionics Corporation (Panasonic) signed a multi-year service agreement targeting in-flight passenger broadband access. Panasonic plans to introduce "eXConnect" a passenger Internet connectivity service that will leverage Intelsat's existing GlobalConnex Network Broadband service which is available on Intelsat's global satellite fleet of 53 in-orbit satellites, and regional teleport facilities. By utilizing Intelsat's existing infrastructure, Panasonic will be able to introduce eXConnect in key regions around the world.

Ericsson to Open R&D Branch in Silicon Valley

Ericsson announced plans to open a research branch in San Jose, California, in August 2008. Jan Uddenfeldt, an Ericsson Senior Vice President and Senior Technology Advisor to the CEO, will move to Silicon Valley to oversee the facility.


In February, Ericsson appointed Bert Nordberg as Chairman of the Board for Ericsson companies Redback Networks and Entrisphere. UTStarcom Exceeds Previous Guidance

UTStarcom announced preliminary results for its fiscal first quarter ended March 31, 2008 which exceed its previously announced guidance. The company now expects Q1revenues to be in the range of $580 million to $590 million, compared with the initial guidance of $500 million to $520 million.


UTStarcom attributed the stronger than expected results to its Personal Communications Division as well as to its core business units. Revenue in the first quarter of 2007 was $475.9 million. Gross margins are now expected to be in the range of 15% to 16% compared to the initial guidance of approximately 13%. The first quarter operating expenses are now expected to be in the range of $120 million to $125 million, compared to the initial guidance of $115 million to $120 million. The higher than expected operating expenses are in part due to unanticipated professional services expenses. Operating expenses in the first quarter of 2007 were $127.5 million.

Planned Europe India Gateway Cable to Scale to 3.84 Tbps

A consortium of 16 companies announced plans to build a next-generation undersea optical cable system connecting Europe, the Middle East and India with up to 3.84 Tbps.


The new system, named the Europe India Gateway (EIG), will connect three continents at a cost of more than US$700 million. The 15,000-kilometer (9,000-mile) cable network system is expected to be completed in 2010. Landings are planned in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Gibraltar, Morocco, Monaco, France, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and India. In addition to complementing existing high bandwidth cable systems in the region, the EIG cable system will provide much needed diversity for broadband traffic currently relying largely on traditional routes from Europe to India.

• In February 2009, consortium of nine leading global telecom carriers met in Rome to sign a formal Construction and Maintenance Agreement for a new high-capacity fiber-optic submarine cable that will stretch from India to France via the Middle East. The cable system, known as I-ME-WE (India, Middle East, Western Europe) is the fifth in the series of similar cable systems which includes the SEA-ME-WE series. Parties to the agreement include Bharti Airtel (India), Etisalat (UAE), France Telecom (France), Ogero (Lebanon), PTCL (Pakistan), STC (Saudi Arabia), TE (Egypt), TIS Sparkle (Italy) and VSNL (India). Sprint released a new version of its application developer toolkit built on Sun Microsystems' Java platform. New developer resources in the Sprint Wireless Toolkit 3.3 include:

• Development tools for the upcoming Samsung Instinct, a touch-screen Java phone, with key features such as over-the-air downloads, GPS support, and full multi-media streaming.



• Features that enable application developers to create more easily through more automated processes and opportunities to "debug" programs earlier.

Cisco Posts Quarterly Revenue of $9.8 billion, up 10% YoY

Cisco reported third quarter net sales of $9.8 billion, net income on a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) basis of $1.8 billion or $0.29 per share, and non-GAAP net income of $2.3 billion or $0.38 per share. GAAP income was $1.8 billion, down 5% YoY.


Some highlights:

• Routing revenue was up 14% YoY. CRS-1 revenue was up 150% YoY. High-end routing revenue overall was up 25% YoY.



• Switch revenue was up 3% YoY. Fixed switching was up 11% YoY.



• Advanced Technology revenue was up 17% YoY. Unified Communications, including WebEx, was up 45%.



• Services Revenue was up in the mid-teens YoY.



• Global Customer Segments: Commercial sales were up 18%, Enterprise was up 9%, Service Provider was up 6%, Consumer/Linksys was up 13% YoY.



• Cash and cash equivalents and investments were $24.4 billion at the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2008, compared with $22.3 billion at the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2007, and compared with $22.7 billion at the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2008.
