Continuous Computing Debuts ATCA Packet Processing Appliance

Continuous Computing has expanded its AdvancedTCA (ATCA) system family with a new ATCA Packet Processing Appliance that delivers up to 20Gbps of deep packet inspection capability in a very compact system.

The ATCA Packet Processing Appliance is targeted for use in lower density edge devices delivering network security, QoS, service level agreement enforcement, traffic engineering, admission and authentication, and session-based billing. The system may also be used for network access control (NAC).

It comes with a suite of Trillium software including control plane, networking and routing protocols -- such as SIP, Diameter, IPv4, IPv6, IPSEC, IGMP, BGP and OSPF -- as well as customized Trillium Professional Services. Each low-profile system contains a FlexPacket ATCA-PP50 deep packet inspection blade and a FlexCompute ATCA-XE30 general processing blade, both housed in either a carrier-grade 2U DC-powered or a 3U AC-powered ATCA chassis.

The FlexPacket ATCA-PP50 packet processing blade incorporates two XLR732 multi-core MIPS devices from Raza Microelectronics. It supports a dual redundant 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) backplane fabric with a range of 10GbE and 1GbE ports to the front and rear. Each XLR732 multi-core MIPS64 processor supports up to 8GB of memory (16GB per blade) and can connect to mezzanine sites for supporting TCAM and dedicated content processors via the on-chip hyper-transport interface.

To complement this new appliance, Continuous Computing also offers a range of ATCA FlexChassis options, including 12U, 5U and now a 2U/3U chassis.

AT&T Launches IMS-based Wireless Video Share Service

In a keynote address at Nxtcomm, AT&T CEO AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson announced the launch of a video share service in the U.S. that allows users to share live video over their wireless devices while participating in a voice call. Video Share enables one-way, live streaming video feeds, which can be seen by both users while they are participating in a two-way voice conversation.

Significantly, Video Share is the first AT&T service to be delivered on the company's new IMS platform. AT&T said the IMS platform will be used to deliver a range of other services and applications over both wireless and wireline network connections.

Video Share is now available in three initial U.S. markets: Atlanta, Dallas and San Antonio. Service availability will then expand in late July throughout the company's 3G wireless network footprint, which covers more than 160 U.S. markets today. The service works exclusively over the AT&T 3G wireless network.

A Video Share-capable handset is required and two Video Share service packages will be available, with prices of $4.99 each month for 25 minutes of Video Share usage, or $9.99 each month for 60 minutes of usage. Users may also choose to pay as they go and pay 35 cents a minute each time they use the service.

"Video Share is groundbreaking today as a wireless-to-wireless service, but the potential for the service will expand even further in the near future," Stephenson said.
