Acacia unveils 1.2T Single-Chip, Single-Channel Module

Acacia Communications introduced a single-chip coherent module delivering 1.2 Terabit (1.2T) on a single-channel.

Acacia's AC1200-SC2 (SC ‘squared’) coherent module, which is powered by the company's 1.2T Pico DSP chip, supports 100GbE clients, as well as emerging 400GbE clients, across DCI edge, metro, long-haul and submarine distances. Specifically, the single-chip, single-channel AC1200-SC2 supports 3 x 400G transmission using 64QAM modulation for DCI edge applications, as well as 1 x 400G transmission using QPSK modulation for long-haul and submarine applications.

The AC1200-SC2 module leverages Acacia’s 3D shaping technology, which is designed to optimize fiber capacity and reach by filling gaps in margin and spectrum. The module is capable of adapting to any channel spacing up to 150 GHz.


Acacia said that the AC1200-SC2 this fine-tuned adjustment of the modulation order and baud rate provides network operators with the ability to adapt the transmission characteristics to meet the requirements of both greenfield and brownfield deployments. It also provides network operators with a straightforward channel plan roadmap.

Acacia plans to demonstrate its AC1200-SC2 module at the upcoming European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) taking place September 22 - 26, 2019 in Dublin, Ireland.

Cisco to acquire Acacia for Coherent Optics

Cisco agreed to acquire Acacia Communications for $70.00 per share in cash, or for approximately $2.6 billion on a fully diluted basis, net of cash and marketable securities. The deal is expected to close during the second half of Cisco's FY2020. Acacia employees will join Cisco's Optical Systems and Optics business within the networking and security business under David Goeckeler.

Acacia, which is headquartered in Maynard, Massachusetts and is publicly traded ((NASDAQ: ACIA), develops, manufactures and sells high-speed coherent optical interconnect products, including digital signal processing / photonic integrated circuit modules, and transceivers.

In May, Acacia posted Q1 2019 revenue of $105.2 million, up 44% year-over-year. GAAP gross margin was 47.4%. GAAP net income was $7.0 million and non-GAAP net income was $15.4 million.

Cisco said Acacia's technology will enrich its optical systems portfolio, allowing customers to transition from chassis-based systems to pluggable technology to simplify operations and reduce network complexities.

On a conference call, Cisco said it is also committed to supporting Acacia's current business including existing and future customers.

Ren tells media that Huawei is willing to negotiate, license 5G patents

Huawei's chairman Ren Zhengfei said the company is willing to license its 5G technology to a Western company in order to create a new competitor in the market, according to an interview published by the Economist. The perpetual license could include Huawei's 5G patents, licences, code, technical blueprints and production know-how.

Separately, in an interview with New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, Ren Zhengfei said Huawei is now willing to negotiate with the U.S. Department of Justice with no pre-conditions.  The article quotes Ren as follows: “If the U.S. reaches out to us in good faith and promises to change their irrational approach to Huawei, then we are open to a dialogue. The U.S. shouldn’t try to destroy Huawei over something trivial. If the U.S. feels we have done something wrong, then we can discuss it in good faith and find a reasonable solution. I think we can accept that approach."

Motorola debuts CBRS push-to-talk radio

Motorola Solutions has introduced the first  push-to-talk radio that lets commercial customers use Citizens’ Broadband Radio Service (CBRS).

The company also confirmed that its CBRS-based private broadband solution, MOTOTRBO Nitro, will participate in the FCC's initial commercial deployment (ICD) phase. This will follow the FCC’s public notice of approval for the ICD phase of CBRS, which is expected in September.

India's Sify selects ADVA for managed Ethernet services

Sify Technologies, the largest ICT service provider in India with more than 10,000 enterprise customers, is deploying the ADVA FSP 150 as the foundation of its new managed Ethernet service.

Deployed at the customer premises, the ADVA FSP 150 demarcation solution delivers MEF-certified CE 2.0 services.

ADVA said its intelligent, multi-layer demarcation and aggregation technology will enable Sify to deliver secure, highly reliable end-to-end Ethernet services, leveraging its nationwide MPLS core network. Cloudflare prices IPO at $15 per share.

San Francisco-based Cloudflare announced the pricing of its initial public offering of its Class A common stock at a price to the public of $15 per share.

Cloudflare is offering 35,000,000 shares of its Class A common stock, plus up to an additional 5,250,000 shares that the underwriters have the option to purchase at the initial public offering price less underwriting discounts. The shares are expected to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange on September 13, 2019 under the ticker symbol “NET”.

The sale is expected to raise $525 million for the company.

Trifacta Raises $100m for "data wrangling" cloud preparation software

Trifacta, a start-up based in San Francisco, announced $100 million in funding for its "data wrangling" solutions.

Trifacta’s data wrangling platform provides a self-service approach to cleaning and preparing data.

Trifacta claims more than 10,000 organizations using its platform, including IQVIA, Visa, Autodesk, Kaiser Permanente, BNSF, PepsiCo, Stanley Black & Decker, Franklin Templeton, Sumitomo Banking Corporation, New York Life and The Commonwealth Bank of Australia, rely on Trifacta to democratize data wrangling.

New investors in this round included Telstra Ventures, Energy Impact Partners, NTT DOCOMO Ventures, BMW iVentures and ABN AMRO Digital Impact Fund. It also includes additional investment from existing investors including Accel Partners, Cathay Innovation, Google, Greylock Partners, Ignition Partners, and Infosys.

UNH-IOL offers cable testing for automotive Ethernet

The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) introduced OPEN Alliance TC9 Cable Testing to their Automotive Ethernet Test Group.

The UNH-IOL is now an approved test lab for 1000BASE-T1 cable testing to OPEN Alliance TC9, which allows for cable manufacturers to have unshielded and shielded twisted-pair cables tested for conformance for Automotive Ethernet applications.

As part of UNH-IOL’s Automotive Ethernet Test Services, the new TC9 Cable Testing service allows customers to verify their automotive cable assemblies and harnesses meet the OPEN Alliance requirements supported by Automotive OEMs, providing customers with confidence that the results are accurate and certified. This new service is now apart of the suite of OPEN Alliance testing the lab offers including TC1, TC10, and TC12 test specifications for PHY Conformance.

“Until now, the UNH-IOL’s Automotive Ethernet testing services focused on silicon validation testing for Automotive PHYs,” said Curtis Donahue, senior manager, Ethernet Technologies UNH-IOL. “By including OPEN Alliance TC9 testing, we’re expanding our Ethernet physical layer expertise to the cable and wire community; hoping to better support the Single Pair Ethernet industries.”
