Huawei Launches its 100G Router + WDM Solution

Huawei rolled out its 100 Gbps core networking solution. Product offerings include 100GE cards (1x100GE and 10x10GE) for routers and a 100G OTU for its WDM platform. These capabilities are provided via Huawei's in-house developed "Solar 2.0" 100G chipsets.

The T100GE cards (1x100GE and 10x10GE) for routers will increase switching capacity of the Huawei NE5000E router cluster system to 200 Tbps. The 100GE cards for routers will increase switching capacity of the NE5000E router cluster system to 200T, allowing operators to meet network capacity expansion requirements. The new router cards will offer wire-speed forwarding capability and guaranteed services at 100G wire-speed.

A 100GE port-based NE5000E router cluster system can be plugged into Huawei's OSN6800/8800 OTN system, which will now support "40/80 wavelengths at 100 Gbps. This will increase transport capacity over a single optical fiber to 8 Tbps.

The WDM 100G OTU, which is compatible with both advanced coding modulation and coherent detection techniques, leverages Huawei' s 100G optical/electrical module and core chips. It provides hybrid transport speeds of 100G and 10G/40G, enabling 40/80-channel 1500 km transport. In addition, 100G OTU helps the overall evolution of the WDM transport network by utilizing advanced, large-capacity OTN switching and ASON technologies.

Telefónica Commissions Six LTE Trials

Telefónica has selected six vendors for a set of LTE trials in six countries. These suppliers are Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Network and ZTE. The countries selected for testing are Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany and the Czech Republic in Europe, and Brazil and Argentina in Latin America.

Telefónica said the LTE field trials will be coordinated globally and that by testing in various geographies it will be better prepared to evolve its networks, which currently serve 264 million customers worldwide.

"At Telefónica we are working with the conviction that we can only offer our clients the maximum levels of quality and innovation. To do this, we are defining our strategy and the rollout of LTE with the objective of driving mobile broadband and offering the best service from the moment that the equipment and terminals can support the new standards and are available for sale", explained Julio Linares, COO of Telefónica.

In April, Telefónica and Ericsson conducted an LTE demonstration in Madrid. The network delivered downloads in excess of 140 Mbps.

NSN Outlines its "Network of One" Strategic Blueprint

Nokia Siemens Networks officially unveiled its long term vision of how telecom operators can transform their business models, infrastructure and operations. The "Network of One" aims to provide a unified approach to cope with the tidal wave of information being created and shared as billions of people and trillions of ‘things' link up from every corner of the planet.

"The market evolution presents many opportunities for operators, but they are also under pressure like never before. The challenges they face are becoming increasingly complex and up to now the general approach has been to deal with them separately", says Stephan Scholz, chief technology officer, Nokia Siemens Networks, speaking at the Solutions Forum. "For the first time we have outlined a holistic approach that operators can adopt to effectively use their scarce resources and provide the ideal experience for their subscribers. Very simply, that describes our Network of One."

NSN said its "Network of One" will reduce complexity while enabling operators to derive greater value from their existing assets, improve their collaboration with other industry players, and realize operational efficiencies.

The vision calls for a simplified IP based flat architecture both in wireline and wireless networks, an automated management and charging system, a consolidated view of customer data, flexible service enablement, unified control of voice and multimedia calls, and new models for optimized business operations.

The "Network of One" plan identifies six key focus areas for service providers:

One simplified network: Evolve your network architecture will towards a simple flat, converged, IP centric architecture (all-IP) allowing much more efficient handling of traffic.

One convergent service control: Converge fixed and mobile voice on one IMS based service control infrastructure, enabling rich communications for customers.

One view of customer data: consolidate customer data that is today distributed across multiple databases and applications, creating the foundation for developing deep customer insights.

One flexible service enablement: drive flexibility in service enablement to allow fast and easy launch and pull down of own and 3rd party services through open API's.

One unified management & charging: consolidate heterogeneous silo management systems into one highly automated system.

One business-optimized operation: explore collaboration opportunities such as outsourcing and partnering to drive efficiency and differentiation in your business and service offerings.

Hutchison 3G Austria modernizes for HSPA+ and LTE with NSN

Hutchison 3G Austria has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to modernize its radio access network to be ready for HSPA+ and LTE. Nokia Siemens Networks will undertake this upgrade starting in autumn 2009. New base stations will allow the operator to halve the energy consumption of its base stations. The operator's network will be ready for download data rates of 21 Mbps (High-Speed Packet Access, HSPA+) in early 2010. As of 2011 the network can be upgraded to LTE, offering theoretical data rates as high as 100Mbps or more. Financial terms were not disclosed.
