Vyatta Releases Open Source Routing Solution

Vyatta, a start-up based in San Mateo, California, released its open source routing solution running on a Dell PowerEdge 850. The 1U rack-mounted package serves as a mid-range access router, delivering two gigabits of throughput at a fraction of the cost of typical enterprise routers. For users interested in a software-only solution, a freely downloadable version of the OFR is available from the Vyatta web site, as well as software subscriptions which include maintenance, upgrades, and software support services.

"For too long the networking giants have perpetuated the myth that only expensive, proprietary hardware was sufficient to run networks. As a result, customers have been prevented from leveraging the economic advantages of industry standard hardware," said Kelly Herrell, CEO of Vyatta.

Broadlight Releases GPON PHY Chip for Lower Cost Deployments

BroadLight announced commercial availability of a new GPON PHY (GPHY) ASIC aimed at lower-cost ONTs. The new device (BL2901) integrates the GPON ONT transceiver's functions of PMD, control and diagnostic functions into a single ASIC. Together with BroadLight's BL2000 ONT System on Chip (SoC), makers of GPON ONTs can now eliminate the traditional costly transceiver module and replace it with lower cost Bidirectional (BiDi) or Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) optical devices.

"ONT cost is the number one feature in the PON market and the BL2901 will enable BroadLight's customers to be successful with the major GPON rollouts," said Andrew Vought, CEO of BroadLight.

The BL2901 is an analog front-end for the BL2000 ONT SoC for interfacing with and controlling Bidirectional (BiDi) and Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) optical devices. The BL2901's functions includes a limiting amplifier supporting a choice of PIN or APD diodes and burst-mode laser driver for FP or DFB lasers. The control through BroadLight's GPHY application software enables compensation for aging, temperature and tracking variations during operation. In manufacturing test, the large variance in optical device parameters is compensated automatically tuning the optics for optimum performance thus cutting down the testing time and labor cost.

Juniper Expands UTM Appliance Line

Juniper Networks added three new appliance lines to its Secure Services Gateway (SSG) portfolio.

The new SSG 5, SSG 20 and SSG 140, which collectively bring nine new SSG models, combine firewall/virtual private networking (FW/VPN) and routing with a set of Unified Threat Management (UTM) security features to protect traffic as it flows in and out of the branch office. The SSG 5, and SSG 20 are targeted at small branch offices and telecommuter environments while the SSG 140 is suited for medium-sized branch offices, and stand alone businesses.

The SSG 5 and 20 platforms deliver 160 Mbps of Stateful FW traffic and 40 Mbps of IPSec VPN throughput. The new SSG 140 platforms deliver more than 350 Mbps of FW traffic and 100 Mbps of IPSec VPN.

Integrated UTM security features include Intrusion Prevention, Antivirus (includes Anti-Spyware, Anti-Adware, Anti-Phishing), Anti-Spam, and Web Filtering to protect traffic flowing in and out of the branch office from worms, spyware, trojans, and malware. http://www.juniper.net

Force10 Awarded Two Patents for 100 Gigabit Ethernet-Ready Backplane

Force10 Networks was awarded two patents for its 100 Gigabit Ethernet-ready backplane, which has been tested at up to five Terabits per second, delivering 330 Gbps to each slot.

The company said both patents protect the unique design of its TeraScale E-Series backplane, which employs a low noise power distribution and high speed signal routing in a common backplane.
While today's typical high performance backplanes support traces that can only reach 6.25 Gbps, the Force10 backplane traces can scale up to 25 Gbps across multiple layers. Additionally, thick power distribution layers are embedded within the backplane and shielded from the signaling layers to achieve the high performance and scalability required to support the move from 10 Gigabit to 100 Gigabit Ethernet.

Force10 now holds 15 patents with 45 patents pending.

Nominum Announces Free Diagnostic Tools to Measure DNS Performance

Nominum is offering free diagnostic tools to deliver accurate performance metrics of Domain Name Services (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services. These include:

  • DNSPerf measures Authoritative Domain Name services and is designed to simulate network conditions by "self-pacing" the query load. Caching services performance and workload profile differ significantly from Authoritative Domain services; therefore a different tool is needed.

  • ResPerf is designed specifically to simulate Caching Domain Name services. To test a caching server, ResPerf systematically increases the query rate and monitors the response rate.

  • DHCPerf measures the DHCP lease assignments to client computers by ramping up lease assignment over time to determine the maximum performance profile.

Marvell Trims Q3 Fiscal 2007 Guidance

Marvell Technology Group trimmed its financial guidance, saying that it now anticipates that its net revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2007 will be down approximately 10% from the $574.0 million of net revenue reported for second quarter of fiscal 2007.

The anticipated decline in net revenue is largely due to lower than expected demand from a number of the company's hard disk drive customers. The company cited weaker than normal seasonal shipments in the personal computer market as well as excess inventory held by some of significant storage customers.

Additionally, the Marvell expects a significant increase in its general and administrative expenses in its third quarter of fiscal 2007 due to higher than expected costs related to its ongoing internal review into historical stock option practices and related accounting matters.
