TE Subcom Demos 100G Coherent over trans-Atlantic Distance

TE Subcom demonstrated 100G coherent transmission over trans-Atlantic distances, achieving 10 Tbps total capacity on a single fiber. The test was completed using a prototype of the company’s new, first generation smarTEr C100 transceiver on a straight line coherent optimized test bed that simulates undersea systems, including amplifiers and fiber, transmitted 100x100Gb/s (10Tb/s) error-free capacity over 6,400km with significant system performance margin. The hardware tested included proprietary soft decision error correction algorithms.

“This significant customer demonstration builds on a 60-year track record of commitment to specialized, long-haul undersea transmission research and development and success in delivering capacity-record-setting undersea cable systems," said David Coughlan, CEO, TE SubCom. “Further, it is a notable step toward the delivery of the first generation of new, 100Gb/s subsea cable systems and marks the beginning of ultra-high, double-digit terabit per fiber pair deployments."

Sisvel Acquires Over 450 Nokia Patents

Sisvel International, which already manage patent pools for the UHF-RFID, CDMA 2000, DVB-T, and DVB-T2 standards, announced that it has acquired 47 patent families comprised of more than 450 patents and applications originally filed by Nokia. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Sisvel noted that thirty-three of the patent families, consisting of more than 350 patents and applications, have been declared essential by Nokia to second, third and fourth-generation communications standards, including GSM, UMTS/WCDMA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service / Wide-Band Code Division Multiple Access) and LTE. The balance of the portfolio consists of implementation patents including video encoding optimization technologies. The acquired patents remain subject to certain prior agreements and Nokia is licensed under the portfolio as part of the acquisition.

"Sisvel has been extremely active in recent years working with the wireless industry to provide simplified access to essential wireless patents on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory, or FRAND, conditions," said Giustino de Sanctis, CEO of Sisvel International. Mr. de Sanctis also explained that "Acquiring the many essential patents in this key portfolio is a very significant step for Sisvel and a testament to Sisvel's commitment and determination to succeed in this space. We look forward to offering these essential patents on FRAND terms and to continuing our work within the wireless industry."

Preparation Work Proceeds on Hibernia Atlantic's Next Cable

Huawei Marine Networks Co., has received a construction contract for Hibernia Atlantic’s Global Financial Network (GFN) Project Express.

The first phase of the project’s marine survey work is complete and Huawei Marine is now commencing the manufacturing of the necessary cables and wet plant for the project. The companies anticipate the Project Express segment of the GFN will be ready for service during the summer of 2013. The system will involve a minimum of a 4-fibre pair repeatered submarine cable, providing connectivity between New York and London, initially using 40G technology with upgrades to 100G planned in the future.

The first phase of the system begins with laying a 4600KM cable from Brean in Somerset, United Kingdom to Halifax, Canada. This cable will then connect to Hibernia Atlantic’s current low latency cable, which runs from Halifax to the United States, passing from Lynn, near Boston, and onwards to New York. The new system will also include five branching units for future connectivity enhancements to the United States, Continental Europe, and Ireland.

Calient Upgrades its Photonic Switch

CALIENT Technologies has upgraded its FiberConnect 320X (FC320X) photonic switch with new software that improves security in multi-tenant applications and adds new configuration flexibility. The new release e can be used to create port groups of any number of ports and assign a specific user to manage and view traffic from that port group.

For government applications that involve multiple security clearance levels, the port group management feature supports seven user classification levels, which allows port group management to be segregated by security clearance level.

Southern Cross Cable Deploys Calient's Photonic Switch

Southern Cross Cable Networks has deployed CALIENT Technologies' FiberConnect 320X photonic switch on its trans-Pacific network. The switch makes it possible to remotely reconfigure the fiber network in seconds, adding further protection in the event of fiber breaks or repeater/transponder failures.

The Southern Cross Cable Network is a fully protected fiber-optic cable network linking Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii directly to the U.S. west coast. The network has 28,900 km of submarine and 1,600 km of terrestrial fiber optic cables, operated in a figure eight configuration. The network has a total of 11 landing points, including sites in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji; as well as Hawaii, California, and Oregon in the U.S.

“Even though 90% of capacity on the Southern Cross Cable Network is configured for automatic protection on self-healing rings, there is always a small chance of multiple failures that require redirection of traffic to maintain service,"? said Fiona Beck, Southern Cross CEO. “Until now this has been a manual intervention that would take time to implement. Because service availability is our top priority, we wanted to take advantage of photonic switching technology to eliminate delays when restoring traffic."

CALIENT’s FiberConnect 320X is based on the company’s patented 3D MEMS technology and uses a three-dimensional array of silicon micro mirrors to switch light paths. It offers 640 total fiber terminations consisting of 320 transmit ports and 320 receive ports. The FiberConnect 320X is built with high reliability and redundancy for mission-critical carrier applications. The power supplies and all key electronics cards are hot swappable to eliminate a single point of failure.
