Bivio Introduces Data Retention System

Bivio Networks, a leading supplier of deep packet inspection (DPI) network systems, has introduced a high-performance Data Retention System for network operators and government agencies. The Bivio Data Retention System provides tracking of user applications, networks and devices across wireline and mobile network infrastructures.


The Bivio Data Retention System uses proprietary record correlation technology combined with deep packet inspection (DPI) network probing to enable contextualized multi-source data collection and retention. The system links together disparate pieces of data to form a single record that represents the full context of the collected information. This information enables rich data mining for powerful cyber investigative operations.


Bivio said this approach differs from existing data retention solutions, which have traditionally focused on collecting data from a specific source, for example call data records (CDRs), IP data records (IPDRs) or server activity logs.

Ixia Scales IP Testing to Terabit Levels

Ixia introduced its "Xcellon" next-generation architecture for scaling IP traffic generation and testing to the terabit level. This class of testing is aimed at carriers, enterprises and equipment manufacturers who are building networks with complex traffic patterns from millions of mobile and fixed subscribers. Requirements includes stress testing and traffic emulation on the highest performance routers, switches, web application servers, application-aware firewalls, application delivery controllers, and security platforms.



Ixia's Xcellon leverages multi-core CPUs, hardware encryption coprocessors and a unique memory sharing design to deliver up to 12 times the per-port packet testing performance of the nearest competitor, while offering full layer 2-7 core network testing. It simulates 4 times the connections per second rate currently available. A fully loaded system is capable of transmitting over 1.2 Tbps of line-rate data. In addition, Ixia said its new Xcellon uses 30% less power than previous generations of 10 GE test ports.


The product launch includes:


Xcellon-Flex load module -- offering 16 10 GE ports per card with multi-core processors and substantial memory. The module has the unique ability to aggregate the processing power of four ports onto a single port to match the capacity of high-scale networking devices. Aggregation of all 16 ports on a card provides the unprecedented levels of network emulation and traffic generation.


Xcellon-Ultra -- featuring extreme capacity and security acceleration for 10 GE application performance testing. It and can generate up to 80 Gbps of line-rate stateful traffic and 40 Gbps of IPsec encrypted traffic, which is sufficient for emulating up to 24 million concurrent Internet video streams. An Xcellon-Ultra XT80 model provides an unprecedented 3 million connections per second to address the testing requirements of the largest application-aware DPI and network security devices. An Xcellon-Ultra XTS40 model provides 4,000 tunnels per second and 40 Gbps of IPsec encrypted traffic to test the highest performing security gateways.

Autonomy's Private Cloud Grows to 17 Petabytes

Autonomy Corporation, which claims to be the world's largest private cloud, revealed that it now manages over 17 Petabytes of email, documents, and multimedia data on 6,500 servers on 8 data centers around the world. Seventeen Petabytes is equal to more than 11 times the size of the 10 billion photos on Facebook, or 226 years of HD video.


Verticals with rapid growth include hosted marketing applications and cloud-based legal collaboration. For instance, a marketing team can form a virtual chain with its network of design and advertising agencies, to securely collaborate on the development of rich media content. Legal teams can form a virtual private chain with their law firm partners, in order securely collaborate on relevant information for a particular investigation or case.

Alcatel-Lucent Packs 256 10GigE ports in Enterprise Switch

Alcatel-Lucent introduced a new 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GigE) enterprise switch as part of its new "Application Fluent Networks" strategy, which optimizes the enterprise network for real-time applications.


The new OmniSwitch 10K Modular LAN Chassis delivers five terabit per second (5 Tbps) of wire rate switching capacity. This enables a density of up to 256 10GigE ports. However, power consumption is rated at less than 1.5 watts per non-blocking Gigabit per second of bandwidth. Alcatel-Lucent is also introducing unique virtual queuing technology that enables fine-tuned application delivery control that prioritizes traffic.

Alcatel-Lucent opens Delivery Center in Bangalore

Alcatel-Lucent opened a new regional delivery center (RDC) in Bangalore, India. The facility provides services to manage, operate and maintain multi-vendor fixed and mobile telecommunications networks based in India or anywhere around the world. This is the first center of its kind for the company in the Asia Pacific region, and the fourth in the world. Alcatel-Lucent's other RDCs are located in the United States, Poland and Romania.


The Bangalore center is already operational and providing round-the-clock services for more than 10 Alcatel-Lucent customers. The center is comprised of 8,000 square feet and is staffed with more than 100 network operations specialists.


Alcatel-Lucent noted that it currently manages more than 90 networks supporting more than 220 million subscribers worldwide.

Hatteras Networks Builds Carrier Ethernet Momentum

Hatteras Networks reported its fourth sequential quarter of record-breaking revenue growth and profitability.
The privately-held company said its strong growth is sparked by extensive customer expansion, product advancements and an uptake in customers' mobile backhaul as well as wholesale and retail service deployments.

Level 3 Vyvx to Offer Uncompressed HD Video Transport

Level 3 Communications offering uncompressed high-definition (HD) video transport services between Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and New York City. The service will support 1.5 and 3.0 Gbps transport with zero compression, ensuring that the video feed is delivered in its native, pristine form.


Level 3 Vyvx customers in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. can use the services for transmission locally or between any of the three cities. Level 3 plans to expand city availability, based on demand, in the coming months.

Aruba Updates its WLAN OS for Multimedia Apps, Smartphone, Tablets

Aruba Networks released a new version of its WLAN OS with new features for multimedia applications in high-density smartphone and tablet environments.


Key features of ArubaOS 6.0 include:

  • Application fingerprinting technology -- this enables identification of encrypted voice and video protocols and applies quality of service (QoS) over the air.

  • Always-on spectrum analysis -- integrated into all Aruba 802.11n access points, the Aruba Spectrum Analyzer provides visibility into sources of RF interference.

  • Wireless intrusion prevention system -- now incorporating tarpit containment and TotalWatch technologies, this enables faster threat mitigation without affecting wireless client performance.

    Aruba also published new technical guides with best practices for high-density deployments of Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones and tablets.

Calix Picks Up Broadband Stimulus Projects in Minnesota

Federated Telephone Cooperative (Federated) and Farmers Mutual Telephone Company (Farmers) have selected the Calix E7 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) and 700GX/GE families of optical network terminals (ONTs) for Broadband Stimulus projects that will bring new services to "unserved" and "underserved" rural areas of western Minnesota. Calix. The companies have gained over $14 million in grants, loans, and private investment to advance these Fiber Forward" initiatives.

Ciena Reaffirms Financial Guidance

Ciena reaffirmed its financial guidance for the fiscal fourth quarter ending October 31, 2010. The company currently expects a sequential increase in its fourth quarter revenue of up to 5 percent, which, based on third quarter results, reflects a revenue range of approximately $390 million to $409 million. IBM introduced a new Blueworks Live cloud offering that brings together process documentation and social community elements with more than 20,000 members and over 200,000 processes already modeled and documented. The new cloud service also adds a new ability to structure and automate ad hoc processes that businesses currently run over email and attachments. Blueworks Live combines and delivers these in one cloud offering/ Service starts at $10 per user per month.

Sony Unveils its Google Internet TV

Sony introduced its first Google TV sets, saying the combination of its hardware and engineering expertise with Google's understanding of open software will deliver a unique user experience.


Sony Internet TV powered by Google TV leverages the Android platform, runs the Google Chrome browser and uses an Intel Atom processor. It provides the ability to search across Internet and television content for access to entertainment and information. The Sony TV models also feature Dual View, allowing users to watch television while tweeting about what they're watching, checking their fantasy football scores, or finding related content on the web. The models also feature Sony's premium streaming service "Video On Demand powered by Qriocity as well as pre-installed apps including CNBC, Napster, NBA, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter, and YouTube.

Intel Posts Record $11.1 Billion in Revenue

Intel reported record quarterly revenue of $11.1 billion, up 18 percent year-over-year. The company reported operating income of $4.1 billion, net income of $3.0 billion and EPS of 52 cents.


Some Q3 2010 highlights:


  • PC Client Group revenue was up 3 percent sequentially, with record mobile microprocessor revenue.

  • Data Center Group revenue was up 3 percent sequentially, with record server microprocessor revenue.

  • Intel Atom microprocessor and chipset revenue of $396 million, down 4 percent sequentially.

  • The average selling price (ASP) for microprocessors was approximately flat sequentially and up significantly year-over-year.

  • Gross margin was 66 percent, consistent with the company's revised expectation of 65 to 67 percent.

  • R&D plus MG&A spending was $3.2 billion, consistent with the company's expectation.

Sonus Networks Appoints New CEO

Raymond P. Dolan has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Sonus Networks, replacing Richard Nottenburg, who previously announced his plan to step down as President and CEO and a director of Sonus. Most recently, Dolan served as CEO QUALCOMM/Flarion Technologies, a developer of mobile broadband communications technologies, as well as Senior Vice President of QUALCOMM Incorporated. Vancouver-based PEER 1 Hosting has selected Juniper's '3-2-1' architecture for an upgrade of its data centers and core network infrastructure. PEER 1 now operates seventeen data centers worldwide. With a growing reliance on mobile technology, uninterrupted telecommunications service is expected by today's consumers. In addition, it is pivotal to the success of companies whose products or services run on networks. The market demand for service availability, which implies a service is always available, regardless of hardware, software or user fault, has increased steadily.


The Service Availability Forum (SA Forum) is an organization enabling the creation and deployment of highly available, mission-critical services by promoting the development of an ecosystem and publishing a comprehensive set of open specifications.


For nearly a decade, the SA Forum has developed open specifications for service availability middleware, helping ensure that systems achieve five 9's (99.999%) uptime. A broad spectrum of telecom companies are using and implementing products based on SA Forum specifications. And many institutions and companies also take an active role in the definition, development and marketing of these standards.


The SA Forum is currently focusing its efforts on educating a broader audience on the benefits of service availability and on sharing practical information about SA Forum specifications and implementations. This focus reflects the recognition that the Forum's robust set of specifications has moved from development to deployment and that service availability has become increasingly significant in the business world.
