Huawei pitches 5G Deterministic Networking

At a press conference in London, Huawei outlined its vision for 5G Deterministic Networking (5GDN).

The idea is to build manageable, verifiable and deterministic virtual private mobile networks, offering customers a predictable and differentiated service experience.

5GDN runs on a cloud-native platform and supports microservice-based 2G/3G/4G/5G full convergence.

Huawei said it is the first to deliver a deterministic networking oriented 5G core network solution. It supports a super-performance heterogeneous MEC, multi-dimensional dynamic intelligent slicing, and a core network automation engine.

  • Cloud Native: The next-generation telco cloud hardware platform E9000H is equipped with in-house Kunpeng chips and runs on a switching-free architecture. With integrated IP+IT capabilities, it ensures optimal cost per bit. Leveraging the cloud native architecture, the Telco Converged Cloud (TCC) unifies the telco cloud infrastructure and supports both VM and container engines to address different requirements of central and edge networks.
  • One Core: The microservice-based 5G core network is fully integrated with 2G, 3G, 4G networks and inherits all existing services. Its centralized control plane and one-stop user plane deployment improves system performance, simplifies deployment, and ensures smooth software evolution, and migration to 5G without changing cards or numbers.
  • Real-time Operation: The core network automation engine integrates multiple NE functions and takes advantage of programmable workflow, data native, and AI capabilities to ensure intelligent, simplified, and agile operation of the 5G core network. Multi-dimensional dynamic intelligent slicing with minute-level automatic deployment provides differentiated virtual private networks for industries.
  • Edge Computing: Super-performance, heterogeneous MEC ensures deterministic low latency and builds a new edge ecosystem based on enhanced connectivity and computing, cloud-edge collaboration, plug and play, and fast integration of third-party services.

"5G deterministic networking is the key to industry digital transformation. Huawei will work with industry partners to promote industry consensus, accelerate industry development, promote service innovation, build an industry ecosystem, and drive new 5G business opportunities", said Ma Liang, Vice President of Huawei Cloud Core Network Marketing Dept.

Huawei also announced that it has secured over 90 worldwide commercial 5G contracts.

In February 2019, Huawei announced that it had 50 commercial 5G contracts.

Huawei debuts AirEngine WiFi-6

Huawei introduced 10 new Wi-Fi 6 access point (AP) models to help enterprises step into the fully wireless campus era.

The flagship AirEngine 8760 AP delivers an air-interface data rate of up to 10.75 Gbps.

Huawei said its AirEngine Wi-Fi 6 series is positioned for:

  • High-density terminal access scenarios, such as office spaces, conference rooms, stadiums, terminal buildings, and stations
  • High-definition (HD) video application scenarios, such as Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) teaching and 4K/8K video conferencing
  • Campus-wide mobile production scenarios, such as Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) robots
  • IoT and Wi-Fi convergence scenarios, such as shopping malls, supermarkets, and smart campuses
  • Outdoor public network service scenarios, such as plazas and streets

Saudi Arabia plans open-access FTTH network

Saudi Arabia’s telecoms regulator is leading a New Open Access Initiative that will deliver fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband services through any subscriber-selected service provider, independent of fiber infrastructure ownership.

A nation-wide active infrastructure sharing agreement was signed on February 23rd by all six telecom Service Providers in Saudi Arabia, including the CEOs of STC, Mobily, Zain, Etihad Atheeb Telecom (GO), Integrated Telecom Company (ITC) and Integrated Dawiyat. The agreement is notable because it includes both access seekers and access providers.

Dr. Mohammed Al Tamimi, governor of the CITC, commented, “The adoption of an open access model will increase the use of our fiber-optic infrastructure through the development of commercial agreements that make it easier for subscribers to move from one provider to another.” The governor commended the level of cooperation between participating telecoms companies throughout the development of the open access initiative.

CITC noted that the Kingdom’s digital transformation has accelerated significantly since the launch of Vision 2030, with its ICT sector valued at $28.7 billion, the largest in the Arab world. According to the International Telecommunication Union, Saudi Arabia has an internet penetration rate of 93% versus the global average of 53%.

Dell'Oro: Mobile Core Network market approaches $8 billion

The Mobile Core Network (MCN) market expanded for the second consecutive year and approached $8 billion in 2019, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia ranked as the top three vendors.

Some highlights from the Mobile Core Network 4Q 2019 report:

  • The top six MCN vendors for 2019, in alphabetical order, were Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, Mavenir, Nokia, and ZTE. These vendors accounted for over 85 percent of the worldwide MCN market revenue.
  • The regional revenue rankings were: Asia Pacific; Europe, Middle East, and Africa; North America; and Caribbean and Latin America respectively.

“The MCN market is expected to continue to grow in 2020, but at a slower pace,” stated David Bolan, Senior Analyst, Dell’Oro Group. “Some of the contributing factors are an anticipated slow take-up of the 5G Core, slower growth in India due to service providers’ financial stress created by increased tax burdens, and the uncertainty in the European Union resulting from unresolved security concerns. The anticipated growth in 2020 will be to serve the increasing number of 4G and 5G subscribers and associated devices like wearables and tablets, the seemingly unquenchable thirst for data, and the growing use of Internet of Things (IoT) in LTE networks."

WWT and Dell develop/validate telco blueprints

World Wide Technology (WWT) and Dell Technologies are opening a new Center of Excellence to create replicable solution blueprints for the service provider industry.

The solution blueprints will be built on top of an optimized Dell Technologies infrastructure stack and be demonstrated in WWT’s Advanced Technology Center (ATC), a testing and validation facility equipped with roughly $1 billion in hardware and software. The Center of Excellence will tap into WWT’s capabilities as a Dell Technologies’ Titanium Black Partner and launch with a focus on mobile edge computing (MEC), industry-specific IoT, telco cloud, data analytics and network function virtualization (NFV).

“As businesses continue to work at unparalleled speeds, organizations must identify ways to simplify and streamline their existing and new networks,” said Kevin Shatzkamer, vice president, Dell EMC Enterprise and Service Provider Strategy & Solutions. “This center of excellence brings together the best of Dell Technologies and WWT to rapidly deploy solutions at scale and reduce the complexity for service providers, allowing them to focus on their core business.”

“Service providers are focused on creating new revenue streams and decreasing their time to achieve that revenue,” said Joe Wojtal, CTO of WWT’s Global Service Provider organization. “The WWT/Dell COE will enable service providers to more easily consume the underlying infrastructure required to deploy new services allowing them to be more agile in creating those new services.”

Dell'Oro: CBRS RAN investments to surpass $1.5B

The overall CBRS market – LTE plus 5G NR – is expected to grow at a rapid pace between 2019 and 2024 with cumulative RAN investments projected to surpass $1.5 billion, according to the latest Dell’Oro Group CBRS RAN 5-year forecast report.

Other highlights from the CBRS 5-Year Forecast Report:

  • CBRS capex is not projected to have a significant impact on the WLAN capex.
  • CBRS investments are projected to account for a mid-single digit share of the overall North America RAN market.
  • Activity is anticipated to accelerate rapidly during the forecast period. 5G NR is expected to drive the lion share of the service provider CBRS capex in the outer part of the forecast period while LTE will likely dominate the technology mix for FWA, IoT, and Enterprise deployments through the forecast period
