Marconi Debuts Service Router

Marconi introduced a new routing platform designed to help service providers deliver high value, low touch IP services such as virtual private networks (VPNs) based on network virtualization capabilities.

Marconi said the service provider market is being driven by the same virtualization trends seen in data centers, where storage and other resources are virtualized. Carrier networks need to evolve into commodity cores with differentiated edges.

The new Marconi Service Router, which is available as a 16-slot mid-plane chassis, uses Dynamic Services Blades to provide its virtual router capabilities. The platform supports up to 8,000 virtual router instances and up to 5,000,000 BGP routes, with all CPU, packet processing, and memory resources managed dynamically in software. Each virtual router has a unique processing context and distinct memory allocation. Virtual router route tables can be set for maximum routes. No sharing of routes or topology is possible, and BGP or MPLS is not required. Each virtual router can be remotely enabled and disabled. Each virtual router can be rate limited and CPU constrained, and one VPN cannot interfere with another VPN.

Significantly, the platform uses Linux and open APIs that allow new application development by Marconi, ISVs and/or end customers. Key hardware features of the platform include:

  • a 80 Gbps switch fabric, which will be upgradeable to 320 Gbps

  • 60 Gbps I/O bandwidth

  • Front-loaded route control processing and packet service engines

  • Up to three chassis per 7-ft rack

  • NEBS Level 3 ready, CE Mark

  • Common Criteria Level 3

  • Hot-swap capability

  • Redundant A and B power feeds

  • AC Chassis

The platform is currently being deployed by Dalton Utilities, which provides a wide range of fiber-based telecommunications services to business and residential customers in and around Dalton, Georgia.

Deployments for the Marconi Service Router are also expected to include the federal market, where the company supplies its other high-end routing platforms.

Marconi said the new platform would complement the routing products offered through its alliance with Huawei.

SBC Sees DSL as Foundation for Next Gen Services

"Broadband is much more than just another add-on service... broadband is the foundation for the newxt generation of wireline services," said Rick Lindner, CFO of SBC Communications, speaking at the Lehman Brothers conference in New York. "That's why we/ve made broadband a high priority and why you can expect us to remain aggressive with DSL. Speaking to investors, Lindner outlined a roadmap for SBC based on five strategic initiatives: broadband, wireless, service integration, business markets, and cost savings.

In broadband, SBC added more than 504,000 DSL lines in Q1, ahead of its industry peers, giving the company more than 5.6 million broadband customers. Lindner said SBC is now winning more than 50% of new broadband customers in its territory. He noted that penetration has increased from 13% a year ago to 20% overall. In California and Nevada, consumer penetration is now at 25%. Lindner also said the alliance with Yahoo! has been a plus. One third of new DSL customers are also buying a home networking solution from SBC. Meanwhile DSL churn rate is down over the last year. DSL is also the stickiest product in the SBC consumer service portfolio.

Project Lightspeed lab testing is "progressing very well," said Lindner. In its trials, SBC has seen seen data rates of up to 25 Mbps over 4,000 ft. of copper, which he considers to be very good considering that most Project Lightspeed end customers are expected to be at under 3,000 ft. Lindner is also optimistic that the new "U-Verse" brnaded services enabled by Project Lightspeed will be warmly received by consumers as well as regulatory policy makers.

Regarding the recent regulatory fight in Texas, Lindner expressed disappointment that the IPTV bill it support did not come up for a vote before the legistative session ended because SBC believes the bill would have passed. Even so, SBC will not change its Project Lightspeed plans. Lindner contends that Project Lightspeed does not fall under traditional broadcast television regulation because it will use an advanced two-way network.

In wireless, the new Cingular has tremendous scale, extensive spectrum, and is preparing to launch 3G UMTS with HSDPA in its first 15 major markets by the end of this year. Other markets will be added in 2006. Cingular's migration to GSM is going well, said Lindner, with 84% of minutes now riding the GSM network.

As for integrated services, SBC has been very successful with its consumer bundles to date. The new challenge, said Lindner, is to transition from product bundles to integrated networks. Architectures such as IMS will improve interoperability across wireless and wireline networks. Lindner believes this integration will be an important key for differentiation for SBC.

In enterprise services, SBC is looking to its pending acquisition of AT&T to significantly boost its industry presence. The AT&T acquisition will add a global network and strength in enterprise services, especially IP VPNs for large companies.

A final opportunite for SBC is to reduce its overall cost structure. To this end, SBC is enhancing its online capabilities and streamlining and standardizing all its operating procedures across all its services. The new announced $14.95 DSL promotion is an example of a new offering that is available only online and for self-install customers.

Infineon Announces VDSL2/ADSL2+ Silicon

Infineon Technologies is extending its DSL silicon portfolio with VINAX, a VDSL2/ADSL2+ end-to-end solution positioned for Triple Play services such as multi-channel HDTV, on-line/on-demand gaming and video applications, VoIP and high-speed Internet access. The new Infineon VINAX chipset drives symmetric 100 Mbps over copper wires at distances greater than 350 meters (1150 ft), doubling the loop reach performance of existing VDSL solutions.

Infineon said VINAX is fully compliant to the new VDSL2/ G.993.2 (Very-High-Bit-Rate Digital Subscriber Line 2) standard, which is solely based on DMT (Discrete Multi-tone Modulation) technology. It provides the long-reach capabilities of the ADSL2+ technology while enhancing the high data rates of VDSL from 70/30 Mbps to symmetric 100 Mbps. In order to carry such high bit rates within a reach of up to 350 meters the VDSL2 frequency spectrum has been increased from 12 MHz to 30 MHz. To meet carrier access market requirements for medium and long loops the transmit power has been raised up to 20 dBm and echo canceling techniques were specified to allow ADSL-like performance for long reach applications. For most efficient use of bit rate and bandwidth flexible framing and on-line reconfiguration methods like Seamless Rate Adaptation (SRA) and Dynamic Rate Repartitioning (DRR) were included as well.

The new Infineon VDSL2 chip set is available as complete end-to-end solution designed for full VDSL2 bandwidth of 30 MHz. The multi-channel Central Office (CO) chipset is based on a 2-chip architecture enabling line card density of 48 full-rate VDSL2 ports in CO and Remote Terminal (RT) applications. MII, R-MII, S-MII, SS-SMII, POSPHY-L2, and Utopia-L2 interface on the backplane side allow full flexibility and in combination with the built-in AAL5 interworking functionality enable system vendors and telecom providers to deploy VDSL2/ADSL2+ line cards in existing Ethernet and ATM networks. To increase service speed and range the solution integrates a 2-port bonding mechanism and therefore enables service providers to reach 100 percent of their customer base. ADSL-like long reach performance is ensured using Echo Canceller algorithms, Time Domain Equalization and a maximum of 20 dBm line power. All service profiles and regional specific requirements can be met with a single hardware platform by appropriate software configuration.

On the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) side, Infineon offers a full standard compliant VDSL2 single-chip solution which addresses both simple bridge modems as well as access gateway applications. The VINAX-CPE can be integrated with the company's new WildPass Wireless Network processor for a complete, ready to deploy, VDSL2 / ADSL2+ gateway reference design.

"We are delighted to see standardized VDSL2 technology entering the market so quickly as it is a key element of next generation DSL business," said Tom Starr, Board Member of the international DSL Forum.

European Regulators See High International Roaming Charges

Regulators from 32 European countries agreed to coordinate their efforts to address the very high retail charges for mobile international roaming services. The European Regulators Group (ERG) said the exorbitant charges appear to result both from high wholesale charges levied by the foreign host network operator and also, in many cases, from high retail mark-ups charged by the customer's own network operator. Reductions in wholesale charges are not being passed on to consumers. Furthermore, consumers often lack clear information on what they will be charged for each call.

The ERG is establishing a project team to identify regulatory measures in order to improve tariff transparency. The issue will be discussed at the next ERG meeting in September.

Level 3 to Deploy Infinera's Optical Transport

Level 3 Communications plans to deploy Infinera's optical equipment across a substantial portion of its 23,000-mile fiber-optic network. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Infinera's DTN platform will provide DWDM at the network's optical transport layer. The Infinera DTN, based on Infinera's photonic integrated circuits, combines DWDM, digital bandwidth management, and advanced network intelligence. The DTN supports 800 Gb/s of DWDM capacity and delivers manageable and protectable SONET/SDH and Ethernet-based services.

Level 3 is continuing its field trials and interoperability testing, and expects to finish installing the Infinera equipment along a majority of its intercity network routes in the U.S., where demand for IP and transport services is greatest, by the end of 2005.
http://www.infinera.com
  • In October 2004, Infinera, a start-up based in Sunnyvale, California, raised $52 million in new funding for its Photonic Integrated Circuit technology. The company has raised $205 million to date. Strategic investors in this round include UTStarcom and CTC (Itochu Techno-Science Corporation), both of which are collaborating with Infinera to provide optical networking solutions in Asia.

  • Infinera is offering an optical transport platform based on its Photonic Integrated Circuits. The Infinera DTN supports 400 Gbps, i.e., forty 10 Gbps channels in a half rack, and 800Gbps (eighty 10 Gbps channels) in a full rack.. 100 Gbps line cards support a variety of hot-swappable client interfaces including OC-192/STM-64, OC-48/STM-16, 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN PHY and WAN PHY, and Gigabit Ethernet. The platform runs Infinera's IQ Network Operating System to automate network discovery, configuration, and provisioning via GMPLS.

  • Unlike conventional optical systems, which use analog optical devices for key networking functions, the Infinera DTN uses digital technology. Its photonic integrated circuits convert all traffic from optical to electronic signals, allowing the DTN to add and drop, multiplex, groom, and protect circuits digitally rather than optically. Infinera's Photonic Integrated Circuits include a 100 Gbps transmitter, which integrates ten lasers, ten 10 Gbps modulators, and an optical multiplexer; as well as a 100 Gbps receiver, which integrates an optical demultiplexer and ten photodiodes. Each enables low-cost optical-electrical conversion on a semiconductor chip.

BT Cuts Prices for Local Loop Unbundling

BT Wholesale launched a special offer to make it cheaper for service providers to move customers onto unbundled local loops. Under this variant of unbundling, the LLU operator chooses to unbundle just the broadband channel on the line with either BT or a wholesale line rental operator providing the narrowband voice service. Line sharing is made possible by installing ‘splitters' in the end user's home or office and another within the LLU operator's network equipment. Under line sharing, the end user has contracts with both the narrowband provider and the LLU supplier for the services each provides.

For LLU operators, BT is offering a 42% reduction in the price for migrating their customers from BT Wholesale's other broadband products to its shared LLU offering.

From 1 July, the price for migrating end-customers from BT Datastream and BT IPstream to shared LLU with the same operator will be reduced from £34.86 to £20.00 (ex.VAT). This offer will apply to LLU operators migrating end-customers in bulk per exchange and will be available for a period of 12 months. This special offer follows the 70 per cent reduction in total charges for shared LLU introduced by BT Wholesale in September 2004. With the introduction of these price reductions, the UK is now ranked third in Europe on price comparison for shared LLU.

Paul Reynolds, CEO, BT Wholesale said, "We are fully committed to seeing LLU a success. Industry interest has grown significantly since BT delivered price reductions of up to 70% on shared LLU in 2004, and we are confident that the special offer announced today will further boost demand."

BT's vision is that by January 2006, LLU operators will have the operational capability to deliver more than one million unbundled local loops a year.
http://www.btplc.com
  • According to the Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator, the total number of unbundled lines in the UK is currently just over 47,000 and is increasing at 2,000 lines per week.

Acme Packet Announces Lawful Intercept/CALEA Support

Acme Packet announced support in its Net-Net session border controller (SBC) for global lawful intercept (LI) capabilities, including compliance with the US Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). LI requires sending call data (the voice over IP signaling messages) and call content (the actual voice media packets) to one or more law enforcement agencies for detection and storage. This intercept must be transparent or undetectable to the both the target subscriber and to the service provider's management systems. In addition, each law enforcement agency eligible to receive the intercepted call must not be aware that other agencies are also intercepting the call. Acme Packet said that for IP networks, which utilize separate signaling and media protocols and paths, these requirements present a challenge.

Acme Packet is working with leading product vendors and trusted third-party service providers - NeuStar, SS8 Networks, Verint and VeriSign - to provide a complete solution for LI. In addition, for MSO cable networks, Acme Packet supports the dynamic provisioning of the targeted subscribers by the Call Management Server (CMS).

In the solutions announced today, Acme Packet's Net-Net SBC is the intercept access point in an IP network. Provisioning of the target subscriber in the SBC is performed by SS8 Networks' lawful intercept platform Xcipio or Verint STAR-GATE products or within SIP signaling messages sent to the SBC by the CMS in a MSO cable network. The Acme Packet SBC forwards intercepted call data and content to the SS8 Networks or Verint delivery functions which in turn provide trusted, secure interfaces to law enforcement agencies.

Acme Packet and its product partners SS8 Networks and Verint support managed services from NeuStar and VeriSign. Service providers use those third-party managed services of Neustar and VeriSign to meet their law enforcement compliance needs while remaining able to keep their focus on delivering innovative, high-quality subscriber services. http://www.acmepacket.com

Global Crossing Introduces Carrier VoIP Outbound Service in Europe

Global Crossing introduced a Carrier VoIP Outbound Service in Europe that provides wholesale IP interconnection, transport and call completion of packet-based voice traffic over its network.

Global Crossing's Carrier VoIP Outbound Service is available using three different access methods. Customers can choose to connect either through Global Crossing IP VPN Service, IP Transit service or via the public Internet. The three access options allow customers to match Quality of Service levels to their requirements. The latter option also allows customers worldwide, beyond Global Crossing's network reach, to cost-effectively connect to the VoIP Outbound service using any public Internet connection for termination of traffic to any telephone in the world.

Global Crossing has deployed session border controllers (SBCs) to provide a secure interconnection point that protects both Global Crossing's and the customer's networks from each other. High performance is guaranteed because traffic is carried over the Global Crossing MPLS private backbone.

Hellas On Line, a Greek Internet service provider (ISP), is using the service to offer Internet-based services, including telephony and unified messaging, Internet connectivity, and value-added and content services, to consumers and enterprises. Global Crossing's Carrier VoIP Outbound service directly connects IP networks, enabling Hellas On Line to avoid the expense of connecting to TDM equipment.

BT 21CN Builds on MSF Implementation Agreements

Several of the MultiService Forum (MSF) Implementation Agreements (IAs) are incorporated into BT's 21st Century Network (21CN) program. MSF IAs build upon protocols issued by standards bodies such as the ITU and IETF, providing practical methods for applying standards to real world networks.

The major elements of BT Group's overall strategy including ICT, mobility, broadband, netcentricity and portfolio transformation are underpinned by the 21CN initiative. An early deliverable of this transformation is the first phase of the migration of services from the existing UK public switched telephone network (PSTN) to a multi-service IP based network which will carry both voice and data services.

"BT's use of MSF IAs is a perfect example of the way that industry leaders benefit from collaboration on the detailed technical work necessary to implement 21st century open architecture networks," said Roger Ward, MSF President. "The MSF's carrier-led collaborative environment develops IAs that support the deployment of VoIP networks with enhanced revenue earning services."

"MSF IAs add the necessary meat to the bones of the work emerging from the international and regional standards organizations," said Alan Nunn, chief voice architect and CTO at BT Group. "Last year's Global MSF Interoperability event (GMI2004), as well as validating MSF IAs and MSF Release 2 architecture, also provided many proof-points for BT's 21CN architecture. As a result, we have been able to de-risk solutions more quickly, which will help us in our goal of achieving an accelerated migration from PSTN to a multi-service IP-based network."http://www.msforum.orgIn April 2005, BT announced eight preferred vendors for its 21st Century Network, an ambitious undertaking in which it plans to invest up to £10 billion over the next five years to migrate to a fully-converged, packet network.

  • Access -- Fujitsu and Huawei have been chosen in the access domain which will link BT's existing access network with the new 21CN.

  • Metro -- Alcatel, Cisco and Siemens have been selected as preferred suppliers for metro nodes which provide routing and signalling for 21CN's voice, data and video services.

  • Core -- Cisco and Lucent will be 21CN's preferred suppliers for core nodes providing high capacity and cost efficient connections between metro nodes.

  • Softswitching -- Ericsson has been selected in the i-node domain – in essence the intelligence that controls the services.

  • Optical Transmission -- Ciena and Huawei have been chosen in the transmission domain. BT plans to deploy Ciena's optical switching and transmission and Ethernet transport platforms.

BT said the selection of these eight suppliers will allow dozens of smaller and innovative subcontractors to become involved in the delivery of the 21st Century Network, attracting significant new investment and employment to the UK. BT expects to conclude contractual agreements with named preferred suppliers for 21CN over the summer.

Occam Unveils Active Gigabit Ethernet FTTP

Occam Networks expanded its line of Broadband Loop Carriers with an Optical Line Termination (OLT) blade that delivers gigabit class active Ethernet services over fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) networks. The company said active Ethernet FTTP offers several significant advantages over BPON or GPON solutions, including the ability to deliver up to one gigabit per second 1 Gbps of bandwidth to each subscriber premise, rather than sharing the capacity via a 1:16, 1:32 or 1:64 split. Occam argues that active Ethernet makes more efficient use of expensive optical ports, allowing the telco to install lasers when subscribers order a higher bandwidth service and to add capacity only when the number of subscribers increases. Because there are no load balance issues as with PON splitters, telcos should be able to control bandwidth according to established service level agreements (SLAs). An active network plant enables location-based fault discovery from the central office using a handheld tester. Active Ethernet can support single or dual fiber topologies with a range laser power budgets. Finally, Occam argues that an active Ethernet architecture would enable a telco to maintain a mixed fiber and copper plant without a change in CO equipment.

Occam's product rollout includes the BLC 6312 Optical Line Termination (OLT) blade for the company's BLC 6000 Broadband Loop Carrier System and the ON 2240, an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The BLC 6312 OLT blade is an Ethernet switch with 22 optical Gigabit Ethernet subscriber ports and two 10 Gigabit Ethernet Intelligent Blade Interconnect Architecture (IBIA) ports. It can be deployed as a single, standalone 1 RU product, which can be stacked with additional units to add capacity and redundancy, or it can be added to the BLC 6000 System chassis for use in high-density deployments. As with other blades for Occam's BLC 6000, the 6312 OLT is environmentally hardened and suitable for deployment in either Central Offices or Remote Terminal cabinets closer to the subscribers.

Occam is partnering with two other companies for the customer-located ONT. Interfaces on the ONT will include 2 POTS (optional 2 additional POTS), 6 Ethernet 10/100TX ports, and a GigE SFP Socket for single or dual fiber plant. Bandwidth can be set in 64 kbps increments. Software support for the ONT includes, VoIP, IGMP for IPTV, NAT, Firewall, and SNMP Management. The ONT is powered by a 12 V DC Power supply inside the home and comes with an outside enclosure with space for a backup battery.

Wisconsin-based independent operating companies (IOCs), LaValle Telephone Cooperative and Richland-Grant Telephone Cooperative, will be among the first companies to field test the Occam FTTP solution.

  • Earlier this month, Occam Networks enhanced its BLC 6000 System with a software upgrade that adds support for several new ADSL2Plus features, including bonding, Annex M, Annex L and Seamless Rate Adaptation (SRA). Bonding provides the ability to bond or combine two ADSL2Plus channels to deliver a single high-speed data stream over a DSL service. This data stream provides an aggregate data rate of more than 48 Mbps. Annex M doubles upstream data rates. Annex L, also known as Reach Extended ADSL, extends DSL line reach, making it possible for Telcos to offer DSL service to subscribers who are more than 18,000 feet from the BLC 6000 System. ADSL2Plus Seamless Rate Adaptation (SRA) software allows modems to make seamless data transfer rate changes to avoid dropping a connection.

Spirent and Psytechnics Partner on Video Quality Assessment for Triple Play

Spirent Communications and Psytechnics are collaborating to offer a video quality assessment test system for carriers, service providers and equipment vendors. The test system measures video quality as well as a broad range of video distortion and degradation parameters under various network configurations and real-world load conditions. The solution is aimed at video on-demand and IPTV services, where ensuring satisfactory end user experience is a necessary ingredient of a successful service rollout.

Spirent has licensed the Psytechnics Video Agent (PVA), a full reference video quality measurement tool based on the ITU J.144 standard and part of the Psytechnics family of Assessment Modules. Spirent has integrated the PVA into its Abacus 5000 IP Telephony Test Migration System.

The test system works by sending reference video clips into the device or system under test. Using a complex video quality assessment algorithm, the test system compares the received video clip from the output of the system under test to the reference clip and provides a MOS (Mean Opinion Score) video quality rating score on a scale of 1 to 5. Additionally, the test system provides several video degradation metrics including Blockiness, Blurriness, Jerkiness, Frame Freeze Events, Frame Skip Events, Temporal Complexity and Spatial Complexity. In addition to performing this testing in a lab environment, two or more test systems can be distributed at various points of the network to perform pre-production assessment of voice and video quality in a real network environment with various levels of real world traffic load. This will help carriers diagnose problems in the network and get an accurate picture of what the network is capable of and where it may break down.
