OIF to host SDN API interoperability demonstration

OIF will host a Transport SDN Application Programming Interface (API) interoperability demonstration over a six-week period (September to October) using Telefonica’s lab in Europe.

Building on OIF’s 2018 and 2016 interoperability demonstrations that helped establish ONF Transport-API (T-API) as the defacto northbound interface (NBI) standard, the 2020 demonstration will test Ethernet, Layer 1 OTN and Layer 0 OTN control using ONF T-API 2.1.3, with additional testing of OpenConfig device APIs for transport equipment in network-operator-defined use cases.

The multi-vendor interoperability demonstration includes participating vendors ADVA, Ciena, Cisco Systems, Infinera and Nokia. China Telecom and Telia are participating as consulting network operators.

“Interoperability is the key success factor for SDN deployment in production networks,” said Arturo Mayoral, Telefónica Transport Global CTIO Unit – Technology Expert and Lead of Optical SDN strategy. “This OIF interop event arrives at the perfect moment to evaluate maturity of the commercial solutions, fostered by the recent efforts done by Telefónica through the iFUSION project, in the design of reference implementations based on ONF T-API and OpenConfig standards.”

“Widespread adoption of transport SDN is a must for network operators to accelerate their transformation for the 5G era and reap the benefits of a more dynamic and open network,” said Dave Brown, Nokia and OIF Officer - Director of Communications. “OIF’s facilitation of this thorough test of specifications and interoperability of open transport SDN APIs will highlight the tools necessary to create an open manageable, flexible network.”

Public read-out events highlighting the results of the testing will take place at select industry events in Q4 2020. In Q1 2021, OIF will hold a webinar and launch a whitepaper describing the results of the event.

Hawaiki upgrades Oregon-Hawaii route with Ciena GeoMesh

Hawaiki has implemented Ciena’s GeoMesh submarine network solution to upgrade its subsea cable between Oregon and Hawaii.

“This route previously went from Kapolei (Hawaii) to Pacific City (Oregon) where an optical-electrical-optical regeneration was required to allow protection on the terrestrial link to Hillsboro,” Hawaiki chief executive officer, Remi Galasso said. “We upgraded this part of our network with the deployment of a multi-span trunk switching solution from Ciena, enabling optical regeneration only. This allows the link to be extended right into the Hillsboro POP with optical protection while eliminating the need for costly regeneration and reducing latency in our cable landing station.”

The full Hawaiki cable system spans 15,000km, connecting Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Hawaii, and the United States. Shortly after the commercial launch in mid-2018, the cable was upgraded with Ciena’s GeoMesh solution allowing Hawaiki to offer the lowest cost per transported bit, while evolving to a total 67Tbps of capacity, enabling design capacity to be increased by 53 percent.

Hawaiki activates Los Angeles branch on its transpacific cable

Hawaiki Submarine Cable activated a new direct route to Los Angeles for its transpacific network linking Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

The new route – based on the most easterly segment of the SEA-US cable – completes Hawaiki’s existing links to the United States, including Hillsboro, Seattle and Hawaii. Los Angeles becomes Hawaiki’s third PoP on the US West coast.

The new route adds resiliency to the system and cuts latency between Sydney and Los Angelea.

“As demand for capacity continues to rise sharply, customers are constantly looking for versatile connectivity solutions. This expansion marks an important milestone for Hawaiki as it both strengthens our position in the US market and greatly enhances our network flexibility,” said Hawaiki CEO, Remi Galasso.


  • Launched in July 2018, the Hawaiki transpacific cable is a 15,000 km fibre optic deep-sea, carrier-neutral cable with a design capacity of 67 Tbps. Hawaiki is the fastest and largest capacity link connecting Australia and New Zealand to Hawaii and mainland United States.

Credo raises $100 million for serial connectivity devices

Credo, which develops Serializer-Deserializer (SerDes) technology for 100G, 400G, and 800G, closed $100 million in a Series D funding round. Funds & accounts managed by BlackRock led the funding round.

Credo is based in San Jose, California. The company's high performance, low power serial connectivity solutions are designed for next generation platforms requiring 25G, 50G, and 100G signal lane-rate connectivity for 100G, 200G, 400G, and 800G port enabled networks.

CommScope introduced an AI-enabled network management as-a-service platform that enables enterprise IT and managed service providers (MSPs) to manage a converged wired and wireless network.

Digital Realty builds carrier-neutral data center in Seoul

Digital Realty began construction on its first data center in South Korea.

Digital Seoul 1 (ICN10) will be built on a 22,000 square foot land parcel within the Sangam Digital Media City in northwest Seoul.

ICN10 is designed to accommodate 12 megawatts of information technology (IT) load.  The building will encompass over 162,000 square feet, spanning twelve levels.  It will provide seamless connectivity, with a vibrant community of domestic and internal bandwidth and data service providers, internet transit, and multiple internet access services.  The facility is scheduled to be ready for customers in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Nokia to supply DCI for Tencent and Baidu

Nokia has been awarded two contracts with China-based webscale giants, Tencent and Baidu, for data center interconnect (DCI) network solutions.

Tencent and Baidu are two of the top four China-based webscale operators. Baidu is the number one search engine and Tencent leads in social media and online gaming. Both have large cloud operations in China and abroad to support their global businesses.

Nokia’s webscale DCI solutions, which are based on the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Interconnect (PSI) and powered by the Nokia Photonic Service Engine (PSE), are also enabling webscale operators in China to support edge cloud applications such as Industry 4.0, AI, machine learning and autonomous driving. Nokia’s DCI and SDN solutions maximize capacity and agility, while simplifying and automating key operational functions for lower costs.
