Keysight intros new network packet brokers for 400G visibility

Keysight Technologies introduced new Vision 400 Series Network Packet Brokers to deliver advanced visibility in high-speed 400G hybrid networks.

The platform offers advanced packet grooming features that strip and terminate 20 different tunnel headers to eliminate blind spots in complex software-defined networks used for application delivery. Multiple port configurations support current network performance while ensuring the networks can be upgraded with 10G/25G/40G/50G/100G/200G/400G offerings. It also offers support for both NRZ and PAM4 standards for maximum port density and flexibility.

Windstream Wholesale launches nationwide 400G routes

 Windstream Wholesale announced the following 400G wave service routes:

  • Ashburn, Va., to Chicago, Denver, San Jose and Los Angeles
  • Atlanta to Dallas, Phoenix, San Jose and Los Angeles
  • Seattle to Portland, San Jose and Los Angeles
  • Chicago to Dallas and Atlanta

“The bandwidth demands facing large enterprise and hyperscale customers are expanding and evolving rapidly as the transition to cloud services and cloud computing accelerates, and Windstream Wholesale is enhancing our long-haul network to ensure we meet their needs,” said Joe Scattareggia, chief revenue officer of Windstream Wholesale. “We are cascading a phased approach that gives our customers time to plan as we continue to invest and enable 400G services across our entire core long-haul network.”

Windstream Wholesale is also taking orders now for the following routes, which will be 400G capable in the second half of 2022:

Windstream Wholesale completes 400G ZR+ trials

GTT targets 400G upgrade of Global IP Network

GTT Communications confirmed plans to investin a 400G upgrade to its global Tier 1 IP network. Juniper Netwoks has been selected for the IP upgrade.

The phased rollout will begin with global metropolitan city locations in the initial phase, eventually spanning GTT’s core IP switching and routing fabric connecting more than 260 cities on six continents. The initial phase of deployment is expected to complete in the second half of 2023. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The network augmentation to 400G will be implemented at multiple network layers that include the core IP backbone and metro extensions as well as customer service nodes where demand dictates.

Marvell has shipped more than 3 million 400G switch ports to date

Marvell has more than doubled its growth year-over-year (YOY) in cloud data center Ethernet switch port shipments, based on 650 Group's quarterly switch report for Q4'21 released last month. 

The company said its share of the overall data center switch market grew from 6% to 10% YOY and specifically within the 50G SerDes segment of switches, deployed by the fast-growing cloud infrastructure market, the company attained a record high of 31% share in Q4'21. 

Notably, Marvell confirmed that it has shipped more than 3 million 400G switch ports to date.

"The continued, and growing, traction of Marvell's Teralynx switch family in tier-1 cloud data centers demonstrates its compelling value proposition for customers requiring the best possible application performance," said Guy Azrad, senior vice president and general manager, Switch Business Unit at Marvell. "Our Teralynx switches are built upon a highly efficient and scalable architecture which delivers the power efficiency and roadmap for 51.2 Tbps and beyond. "The Ethernet switch market reached a new all-time high in 4Q'21, exceeding a $9 billion per quarter run-rate for the first time, driven by cloud data centers," said Alan Weckel, founding analyst for 650 Group. "This past quarter, our research found that Marvell's market share reached 31% for 50G SerDes shipments, achieving the highest to date, with growth YoY at 104%."

Marvell intros 400G/800G PAM4 DSPs for Active Electrical Cables

Marvell introduced its Alaska A PAM4 DSP family for Active Electrical Cables (AECs) designed for data center interconnects by hyperscale customers.

The new Alaska 400G/800G DSPs, fabricated in 6nm process, leverages Marvell’s PAM4 DSP technology to improve signal integrity in copper, short reach AECs to address emerging 100G/lane adoption in cloud data center interconnect architectures. 

The new Alaska 400G/800G DSPs add to Marvell’s comprehensive portfolio of high speed transceivers, including line card retimers, gearboxes and MACsec PHYs supporting rates up to 800G, and active optical cable (AOC) interconnect solutions. 

Marvell said its Alaska A DSPs for AECs can compensate for >40db of loss, which enables longer reach and thinner cables, both of which are key requirements for high density data center deployments. The Marvell AEC platform includes a complete cable reference design for 400G and 800G AECs and software stack with CMIS5.0 support as well as proven interoperability with leading switch and NIC platforms. Marvell’s Alaska A platform brings Marvell’s PAM4 DSP leadership coupled with the state-of-the-art cable manufacturing and assembly expertise of leading cable manufacturers. This combination delivers best-in-class AECs as well as the scalability and supply assurance to meet the critical requirements of cloud customers.

“100G/lane-enabled products are the next inflection point for data centers, as artificial intelligence, machine learning and other data-intensive workloads grow,” said Achyut Shah, senior vice president and general manager of Marvell’s PHY business unit. “Achieving the reach needed for AI accelerators and server to top-of-rack links and switch-to-switch interconnects requires an active electrical cable (AEC) solution because of the reach limitations and cable thickness challenges of passive direct attach offerings at 100G/lane. Marvell also confirmed that it is working with leading data center cable manufacturers, including Amphenol, Celestica, Luxshare-tech, Molex, TE Connectivity, and Volex.

PacketLight announces 4.8T transponder for 400G transport

PacketLight Networks introduced its PL-4000G 4.8T Transponder for transporting a flexible mix of 400GbE and 100GbE client services over 400G wavelengths.

The company says its new PL-4000G modular, standards-based device increases network capacity and enables flexible pay-as-you-grow architecture by delivering up to 12x400GbE or up to 48x100GbE client services using QSFPDD-SR8/LR8 or QDFPDD-DR4/FR8 standard MSA pluggable modules, respectively. The device supports 400ZR, and OpenZR+ standards with industry-standard CFEC and OFEC respectively.

The PL-4000G supports standard MSA pluggable modules, which reduce power consumption by more than 70 percent and improve 100/400GbE port density. The transponder integrates mux/demux, two EDFAs and an optical switch, delivering the entire DWDM/OTN end-to-end infrastructure solution in a 1U form factor, and facilitating a cost-saving solution. The PL-4000G provides a full demarcation point between the 100GbE and 400GbE client services and the DWDM, and is interoperable with any third-party vendors’ switches and routers.

Arista intros 400G Switches at OCP Summit

Arista Networks introduced its next generation of 7050X and 7060X Series switches optimized for 400G networks.

Introduced at OCP 2021, the all new Arista 7388X5 continues the modular system innovation from the 7368X4 and is compliant to the OCP Minipack2 specifications, doubling performance with 30% improved power efficiency. The Arista's 7388X5 shares Meta’s Minipack2 goals of a choice of form factor that supports high density 200G and 400G links. Arista offers a choice of operating systems with enhancements and supports additional use cases with operational efficiency benefits that simplify cloud network designs.

The Arista 7060X5 systems are the highest density 400G options for leaf-spine architectures, offering next-generation performance at the lowest power consumption and leverages the latest Broadcom 25.6Tbps silicon. With up to 64 ports of 400G in 2U, the 7060DX5-64S delivers 10.6Bpps that can be flexibly used in 100G, 200G and 400G environments.

“We are seeing customers of all sizes show interest in the next generation of 400G systems that provide incremental improvements without sacrificing backward compatibility. The 7050X4 Series 32 x 400G and 7358X4 Series 128 x 100G / 32 x 400G systems enable large enterprise and service provider customers to unlock the potential of 400G. 

Arista says the new systems provide a smooth evolution to higher performance without disruption to existing architectures and increase network capacity by 4 times over the previous generation. All parts of the 7358X4 are field replaceable, simplifying deployment and leveraging the same common equipment and modules as the Arista 7368X4 Series, accelerating the migration to 400G data center networks with up to 32 ports of 400G in 4RU with pay-as-you-grow flexibility.

The 7050X4 and 7358X4 feature:

  • Enhanced network telemetry to detect and address congestion hotspots in real time
  • Traffic management enhancements tuned for RoCE and NVMEoF workloads
  • Support for 10G to 400G to ease the transition to higher performance compute

The new 7050X4 and 7358X4 are available in Q1 2022. The 7050X4 is available in a choice of two port configurations supporting 32 ports of 400G OSFP or QSFP-DD in 1RU. The 7358X4 modular system provides a choice of 25G, 100G and 400G ports.

Arista 7060X5 and 7388X5 doubles performance from the 7060X4 and 7368X4 in a choice of form factors:

  • 64 x 400G in 2U fixed or 128 x 200G in 4U modular systems 
  •  Increase network radix by a factor of 2 or allow the migration to 200G

The 7388X5 and 7060X5 will be available in 1H 2022, with customer testing currently in progress. Pricing starts at $1800 / 400G.

EXA Infrastructure activates 400G linking Europe and North America

EXA Infrastructure, which is a new carrier that consists of the subsea European, and North American infrastructure and data centre assets previously owned by GTT Communications, introduced 400 Gbps transport services across its network.

EXA Infrastructure will initially enable 65,000km of its network footprint to support 400G, including two transatlantic cables, which equate to more than 3000 possible route combinations. 400G wavelengths are available from EXA with immediate effect, with further routes and POPs to be added over the coming 12 months..

“400G is the next step in high-capacity bandwidth technology, and by introducing it on our network we can now look to make a substantial leap forward in the bandwidth density and service speed we offer,” said Steve Roberts, Senior Vice President Product and Marketing.

“There continues to be surging demand from our customers to carry more data, at greater speeds, and with greater efficiency, particularly for data centre-to-data centre connectivity. 400G interfaces answer this call, with a 75% reduction in patching costs and 75% fewer QSFP pluggable modules required, resulting in simplified service delivery and reduced power consumption. It is the first of many steps we intend to take to invest in further network capacity and reach,” he said.

Credo debuts 400G and 800G MACsec devices

Credo introduced its Osprey family of second-generation Media Access Control Security (MACsec) solutions for 400G and 800G networks. 

Credo’s high-speed Osprey MACsec devices address security requirements for various Ethernet data link configurations. Credo's latest 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) cipher technology is integrated to deliver increased data security to critical high-speed data links between servers, switches, and routers. Osprey devices are Cryptographic Algorithm Validation Program (CAVP) certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Credo says the new Osprey devices deliver a 40% power savings versus competing devices and allow Credo to deliver the industry’s most comprehensive family of PHY devices to support the IEEE 802.1AE MACsec and Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) standard for 10G through 400G port interconnects used in the most demanding data center environments.

“Credo is extending our established MACsec leadership with the lowest power MACsec solutions in the industry — the new Osprey 400 and Osprey 800. MaxLinear demos 400G transceivers

At the China International Optoelectronic Exposition (CIOE, September 16-18), MaxLinear demonstrated Molex LLC’s 400G-DR4 optical modules based on MaxLinear’s Telluride (MxL9354x) pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM4) digital signal processors (DSPs). 

MaxLinear’s MxL9354x Telluride family of SoCs are key components in the deployment of hyper-scale data centers based on 100Gbps single lambda optical interconnects. They enabled Molex to build their high-performance 400Gbps optical modules in a compact QSFP-DD form factor for intra-datacenter applications and meet the strict performance and interoperability requirements of next-generation hyperscale data centers.

The Telluride family of high-performance PAM4 DSP SoCs enable 400Gbps optical modules using a 4x100Gbps optics interface. These SoCs are suitable for use within QSFP-DD and OSFP module form factors. The MxL9354x 400G PAM4 DSP integrates an optional EA-EML driver with 1.8V PP SE swing. Asynchronous breakout mode clocking is an essential feature for hyperscale data center customers initiating 400G DR4 deployments. MaxLinear’s 400G Telluride DSPs (MxL9354x) integrate this clocking requirement.

The devices feature a comprehensive digital pre-distortion (DPD) engine in the transmit direction to compensate for laser non-linearity and to cancel packaging limitations that cause reflections and bandwidth degradation at these extremely high signal frequencies. On the receive path, the DSP includes an auto-adaptive signal enhancement engine, which integrates a continuous time linear equalizer (CTLE), automatic gain control (AGC), a feed forward equalizer (FFE), and a decision feedback equalizer (DFE).

Credo's Active Electrical Cables carry 400G over 7m

Credo announced its second generation HiWire LP SPAN AEC (Low Power SPAN Active Electrical Cable) family, promising a reduction in power of nearly 50% and while increasing reach 40% compared to first generation.

The hot-swappable LP SPAN AEC is positioned as a reliable, plug and play replacement of Active Optical Cables (AOC) for high-speed interconnects up to 400Gbps at approximately half the power and lower cost. 

Credo says its LP SPAN AECs are easier to deploy than DACs due to their longer reach, lighter weight, and tighter bend radius.  It’s designed for rack-to-rack connectivity, especially in Distributed Disaggregated Chassis (DDC) implementations.


400G LP SPAN AECs are terminated with QSFP-DD modules and support 8x56G lanes while 200G LP SPAN AECs are terminated with QSFP65 modules and support 4x56G lanes. The cables use PAM4 modulation at both ends and have integrated retimers.

Zayo lays out its 400G upgrade plan

Zayo announced the planned deployment of thirty-one high capacity, 400G-enabled long haul routes across North America and Western Europe. The significant network update is expected through Q1 of 2022. Up to 800G transmission will be available in select areas as Zayo deploys significant speed enhancements in anticipation of future network needs.

Aqua Comms, Telia Carrier and Ciena test transatlantic 400GbE

Aqua Comms, Telia Carrier, and Ciena completed a trial of 400GbE services between New York and Frankfurt.

The trial follows the announcement that Aqua Comms upgraded its two transatlantic submarine cable routes with Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution, which leverages WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent optical technology. Aqua Comms provided the Trans-Atlantic capacity and 400GbE service  from New York to London with Telia Carrier providing the ongoing terrestrial service from London to Frankfurt demonstrating that their traffic can be passed on seamlessly across their respective transmission networks and utilized on Telia Carrier’s IP Backbone (AS1299) with active 400G interfaces routing on both continents.

Aqua Comms upgrades trans-Atlantic submarine cable routes with Ciena

Aqua Comms has upgraded its two Trans-Atlantic submarine cable routes with Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution.

Aqua Comms owns two major subsea networks: AEC-1 that connects the US, Ireland, the UK, and AEC-2, which connects North America with Scandinavia, Ireland and the UK. With Ciena, the AEC-1 path, that spans 5,521 km and connects New York to Ireland and the UK, has been completely modernized and upgraded to support 400GbE services leveraging Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e), doubling the cable’s capacity to almost 20 Tbps.

Aqua Comms is also utilizing Ciena’s technology to enhance the 7,650 km AEC-2 network to support up to 500G Trans-Atlantic channel rates and the introduction of spectrum sharing and backhaul capabilities for its customers.

Ciena said both upgrades were successfully completed with the networks in-service. The upgrade will also provide Aqua Comms with access to Ciena’s Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) domain controller that offers a more sophisticated management and control capability, translating into significant operating efficiencies. Aqua Comms is also adopting Ciena Insights Service and predictive software capabilities to help resolve network issues.

Aqua Comms activates AEC-2 transatlantic cable

NTT launches 400 Gbps service

 NTT West and NTT East are now offering a 400 Gbps "High-speed Broadband Access Service" intended for data center connection and transmission / reception of big data sets, including video. 

The service provides high-speed, large-capacity bandwidth-guaranteed Ethernet communication by limiting communication between two "Point to Point" bases specified by the customer (limited to communication within the same prefecture).

Hengtong Rockley Technology Co. announces 400G QSFP-DD DR4

Hengtong Rockley Technology Co., a subsidiary of Hengtong Optic-Electric Co., introduced a 400G QSFP-DD DR4 transceiver based on silicon photonic circuits made by Rockley Photonics Limited.

The mass production version of 400G QSFP-DD DR4 transceiver based on silicon photonic circuits and 400G QSFP-DD FR4 transceiver based on traditional free space solution were released, making Hengtong capable of providing customers with 400G single mode optical transceiver modules for different transmission distances.

Hengtong’s 400G transceivers utilize a chip-on-board (COB) assembly solution. A unique fabrication process and passive alignment is used for the optical coupling between fiber and silicon photonic chips.

Hengtong Rockley plans to accelerate mass production on 400G QSFP-DD DR4 silicon photonic transceivers.

Gigalight launches 400G QSFP-DD PSM8 transceivers

Shenzhen-based Gigalight introduced its 400G QSFP-DD PSM8 transceivers for 400G Ethernet and OTN at distances of 2km or 10km.

Gigalight said its new 400G PSM8 modules are based on a unique parallel optical design. The inside of the module uses a single PCB design, which reduces the difficulty of attaching the board. The process is simple, easy to mass produce, reliable in process, and controllable in thermal design. The performance and power consumption are excellent, which is believed to be the leading level in the industry.

Key features of GIGALIGHT 400G QSFP-DD PSM8 optical modules:

  • 8-lane parallel light engine
  • Dual rates of 400G Ethernet and OTN

Nikhef and SURF activate 400G between Amsterdam and CERN

Nikhef and SURF activated their first 400G connection between Amsterdam and CERN in Switzerland, a distance of 1650 kilometres. This connection builds on the successful pilot project in the Randstad conurbation in 2020.

CERN plans to bring back the LHC particle accelerator slowly over the course of 2021, reaching full production status by 2022. The data generated by the LHC will then be distributed worldwide via Nikhef.

IEEE forms 802.3 Beyond 400Gb/s Ethernet Study Group


IEEE has formed a study group within the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group with an aim to standardize capabilities exceeding today’s maximum data rate of 400 Gbps.

The first meeting of the newly launched IEEE 802.3 Beyond 400 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group is scheduled for the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group’s interim session the week of 18 January 2021.

“The path to beyond 400 Gb/s Ethernet exists, but there are a host of options and physical challenges that will need to be considered to take the next leap in speed rate for Ethernet,” said John D’Ambrosia, Distinguished Engineer, Futurewei Technologies, who led the call for interest in forming the IEEE 802.3 Beyond 400 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group. “Both the historical trend lines for Ethernet bandwidth demand and everything the industry understands today about its future needs and technology growth curves indicate that the time to take the next step is now, in order to satisfy humanity’s needs and desires for connectivity. It will be the responsibility of the study group to examine the problem and develop the project authorization documentation necessary to launch a new standard-development project.”
