Data Connection Launches Messaging Solution for TDM, VoIP

Data Connection introduced a carrier-class voicemail, e-mail and fax messaging solution that supports both traditional TDM connectivity and VoIP. The "MailNGen" solution enables a carrier to offer messaging services with easily-branded web interfaces. It includes a broad set of voicemail and email capabilities, such as web access to voicemail and telephone access to e-mail.

Data Connection's messaging platform leverages a server-farm software architecture that employs low-cost hardware and off-the-shelf storage solutions. Another key aspect is the open standards-based design, which offers native support for POP-3, IMAP-4, SMTP, HTTP, LDAP, VXML and VPIM standards for easy interoperability and integration with third party clients and network components.

Vitesse Introduces New Gigabit Ethernet Switch ICs

Vitesse Semiconductor introduced two new Gigabit Ethernet switch ICs: Gatwick -- a Layer 3, 24-port tri-speed (10/100/1000) plus 2-port 10 Gbps Switch/Router Integrated Circuit (IC), and Fairoaks -- a low-cost Layer 2+, 24-port tri-speed plus 2-port 10 Gbps Switch IC. Both devices support advanced features such as deep packet and programmable classification for optimizing Quality of Service. They can also differentiate packets and prioritize them based on information inside the packet including Differential Service Code Points (DSCP) and VLAN priorities (IEEE 802.1p). The products also provide jumbo packet support allowing packet sizes greater than 10 Kbytes, as well as double VLAN tag support. Gatwick and Fairoaks have two uplink ports of 10 Gbps and require no external memory or CAMs. Additionally, two of either ICs can be directly connected together to produce a 48-port switch system in a standard 19 inch, 1U high form factor. Vitesse said its two chip count solution for a 48-port Gigabit switch system would reduce the cost of such systems, which currently requires five component chips.

Redback Files Prepackaged Chapter 11 Case to Eliminate $467 Million in Debt

Redback Networks filed a pre-packaged plan of reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The plan would eliminate $467 million in existing debt and reduce operating expenses by a third by relieving real estate obligations in exchange for new equity in the company. Existing shareholders would retain an estimated 5 to 15% of the company. Its plan also calls for a 73:1 reverse split in order to preserve its listing on NASDAQ.

In July 2003, Redback Networks presented the plan to its creditors, who voted overwhelmingly for its approval. The plan was presented to shareholders, who also accepted the out-of-court plan. However, Redback was unable to obtain the required quorum and has now presented the pre-negotiated restructuring proposal to the bankruptcy court. Redback expects to emerge from the Chapter 11 process as a restructured company in possibly as few as 60 days.

During the period of reorganization, Redback expects its business operations to continue as usual. Kevin DeNuccio, president and CEO of Redback, said that by virtually eliminating existing debt and achieving a new financial model, the Chapter 11 process would greatly reduce "the hurdles to reaching profitability, and easing concerns surrounding our balance sheet."http://www.redback.com

Charter Adds 140,700 cable modem customers in Q3

Charter Communications, the nation's third largest MSO, reported Q3 revenues of $1.207 billion, an increase of 4% over last year's third quarter revenues of $1.166 billion. The increase is due primarily to growth in high-speed data revenues of $54 million or 59%, reflecting 519,800 additional customers since September 2002 including 140,700 in Q3 2003. Video revenues totaled $866 million in the quarter as compared to the prior year's third quarter revenues of $862 million. Some highlights from the quarter:

  • revenue generating units (RGUs) totaled approximately 10,676,700 at the end of Q3, an increase of approximately 511,800 units, or 5% from the 30-Sept-02 totals. Charter said this increase in RGUs was driven by an extensive marketing campaign, including free periods of service, resulting in an increase in high-speed data and digital video customers of 519,800 and 137,100, respectively. These increases were partially offset by a loss of 149,500 analog video customers, or 2% over the past twelve months. RGUs increased approximately 213,200 units, or 2%, as compared to Q2 2003.

  • Charter reported sequential net gains of analog and digital video customers of approximately 11,200 and 60,900, respectively, during the third quarter. Q3 analog video customer gain was 0.2%, and quarterly digital video customers increased 2%.

  • Charter added approximately 140,700 cable modem customers in Q3, a sequential increase of 10%, during the quarter, bringing the total high-speed data customers served to 1,489,700.

  • Income from operations grew 29% year over year to $117 million in Q3

  • Capital expenditures totaled $239 million, a decrease of 57% as compared to Q3 2002.

  • Charter generated $96 million in free cash flow for the first nine months of the year, an improvement in excess of $1.1 billion as compared to the first nine months of 2002.
