Pedestal Secures $20 Million for Line Powered DSLAMs

Pedestal Networks, a start-up based in Fremont, California, raised $20 million in Series C funding for its line-powered DSLAMs. Pedestal Networks' platform combines patent-pending power technology, automated provisioning, and an environmentally hardened and waterproof enclosures that enable a remote DSLAM to be deployed anywhere in a carrier's outside plant, including underground, underwater, in a buried hand-hole, mounted on poles, inside pedestals or crossboxes, or in any similar unconditioned enclosure in the field.

Pedestal Networks has raised $34 million to date. The up-round was co-led by new investor Duff Ackerman & Goodrich LLC (DAG LLC) as well as all existing investors, including Benchmark, Doll Capital Management, and Skymoon Ventures. http://www.pedestalnetworks.com
  • In October 2003, Pedestal Networks introduced a Universal Broadband Server (UBS) DSLAM that features a proprietary line-power technology, automated provisioning, and an environmentally hardened “brick? design. The platform incorporates 24 ADSL modems, built-in line splitters and protection, and an internal digital cross-connect in a 12? x 14? x 2.5?, hermetically-sealed enclosure. The small packaging enables the remote DSLAM to be deployed anywhere in a carrier's outside plant, including underground, underwater, in a buried hand-hole, mounted on poles, inside pedestals or crossboxes, or in any similar unconditioned enclosure in the field. Power is provided through standard HDSL2 or HDSL4 connections. Pedestal's adaptive power technology automatically configures the UBS to use appropriate power for the distance and quality of the links. Carriers can also install the UBS behind “loaded pairs,? copper pairs that use load coils to enhance voice signals over long loop distances. Only the backhaul T1 need be “unloaded? to support the UBS.

CoSine Adds Consumer Features to B-RAS

CoSine Communications expanded its focus in the consumer broadband market with two new Services-centric B-RAS features for its IPSX 9500 and 3500 Service Processing Switches. These features -- Virtual Subscriber Identity (VSI) and Virtualized Multicast -- give service providers the ability to offer more profitable broadband services. With CoSine's VSI feature enabled on the IPSX, a consumer's profile can be carried across all types of broadband access methods, enabling service providers to offer Anywhere Services. CoSine said that by creating a dynamic virtual instance of the consumer's preferences in its IPSX, service providers can offer consumers specific levels of entertainment and information that can be accessed around-the-clock over any network type. Furthermore, a hardware-accelerated Virtualized Multicast capability enables service providers to pursue an Open Content Distribution model for third party video and real-time services. CoSine plans to make the IPSX with Services-centric B-RAS features generally available in Q2 2004 with an entry-level price of around $100,000. http://www.cosinecom.com

CoSine Offers Multicasting for Enterprise Video Services

CoSine Communications announced its a multicast feature set for IPSX 3500 and 9500 Service Switches. The new capabilities include Virtualized Multicast routing initially based on Protocol Independent Multicast Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) and hardware-accelerated Multicast Forwarding, both of which enable service providers to replicate and distribute a single stream of video to a few locations or to several thousand different sites. CoSine said each service can be customized on a per-enterprise basis. The designs scales to support thousands of PIM-SM instances at multi-gigabit speeds. CoSine's IPSX and the new multicast features are currently in trials with carrier customers. CoSine plans to make these features generally available in Q2 2004. An entry level IPSX with the Multicast feature set is available starting at $100K. http://www.cosinecom.com

  • In November 2003, NexTone Communications introduced a new "FlexPeer" technology aimed at normalizing VoIP traffic at the edge of the network before it enters the network core. The technology, which is embedded within NexTone's Multiprotocol Session Controller (MSC), would enable carriers to adapt their VoIP network to the not-so-subtle nuances of reliably interfacing to VoIP solutions found in other carrier networks or enterprise campuses. Slight differences in vendor implementations of VoIP signaling, T.38 fax support and DTMF transport have caused carriers to use TDM to normalize traffic between back-to-back peering VoIP gateways. NexTone's FlexPeer provides the same function while remaining in IP format.

  • Announced NexTone customers include iBasis, ITXC, FreeWorld Dialup.
