ADVA Selected for Slovenia's National Research Network

The Academic and Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES) has deployed ADVA Optical Networking's FSP 3000 to significantly expand its capacity. ARNES connects 200,000 users in over 1,100 education, research and cultural organizations throughout Slovenia. Built upon a single dark fiber, the new network offers its users a flexible IP backbone using dedicated point-to-point gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) links. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Bel Fuse Teams with Teranetics, Packing 48 10GBASE-T in 1RU

Teranetics, a start-up specializing in high performance Ethernet silicon, and Bel Fuse introduced a high-density 10GBASE-T solution that enables switch manufacturers to design up to 48 RJ-45 ports into a single rack unit. The joint solution showcases Bel's G08-8NNR-031 2x4 MagJack connector along with the recently dual-port 10GBASE-T PHY IC from Teranetics.


The Teranetics TN2022 features multi-rate capabilities, consuming only six watts of power per port at the full 10 Gigabit rate, and operates at cable lengths exceeding one hundred meters. Bel's G08-8NNR-031 MagJack connector delivers the highest density with its double stack, eight-port format, while supporting Ethernet signal transmission at 10GBASE-T data rates
and distances.

Germany's Media Broadcast Delivers Bundesliga in HD over Alcatel-Lucent's IP/MPLS

MEDIA BROADCAST GmbH will begin transmitting HD video of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga, Germany's national soccer league, to the living rooms of millions of fans via DVB-H, DVB-T, DSL or cable. The new broadcast network supports the simultaneous transmission of multiple transparent HDTV signals and a wide range of interfaces. The IP/MPLS network is based on the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router, which manages voice, video and data signals and guarantees the network availability, which is crucial to the live transmission of soccer matches. To date, 18 points of presence have been linked with fixed connections, IP/MPLS and Ethernet technology with a capacity of 10 Gbps.


"This next-generation IP/MPLS network will allow German soccer fans for the first time to enjoy the live broadcast of the games in HD quality in the comfort of their homes," said Alf Henryk Wulf, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Alcatel-Lucent in Germany. NSN Takes Over Operations of EMBARQ's Voice Network

Nokia Siemens Networks has completed the transition of responsibility for Embarq's (EQ) voice network operation center (NOC) function. The seven-year agreement between the companies was announced June 12, 2008. Financial terms were not disclosed.


Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will perform network operations for EMBARQ's voice networks, ensuring high network quality and providing ongoing technical assistance. Kenya Links its National Parks with RADWIN

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has deployed RADWIN's Multiple point-to-point (MPtP) wireless systems to connect its headquarters in Nairobi to eight national parks. UUNET Kenya, a leading systems integrator in Kenya, was in charge of project deployment. The network is being used to transfer E-Ticketing information, Safari Card data, Internet and VoIP from the parks to the KWS main office. Alcatel-Lucent Supplies WiMAX Rev-e network in Azerbaijan

Delta Telecom has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy Azerbaijan's first commercial WiMAX 802.16e-2005 (Rev-e) network. This new network will provide Delta Telecom's customers with high-speed Internet access as well as other data services and VoIP. It will accommodate stationary, nomadic and mobile applications and will complement Delta Telecom's existing fixed broadband services in sparsely populated areas, where technical and economic factors sometimes make fixed broadband deployments impractical. Delta Telecom plans to launch the commercial services on the network at the end of 2008. Financial terms were not disclosed.


Alcatel-Lucent said it will supply infrastructure and services to both deploy WiMAX and modernize Delta Telecom's nationwide carrier backbone infrastructure. The solution includes base stations, WiMAX access controllers, terminals, an IMS core network and applications software and platforms. Exalt Introduces 5 GHz Microwave Backhaul Radio

Exalt Communications introduced its EX-r GigE series of microwave radios, covering all three 5 GHz bands in a single carrier-class system and featuring native Ethernet and native TDM support integrated in a single system.


Exalt said its new EX-r GigE series microwave platform provides sufficient capacity and resiliency to allow wireless operators, enterprises and broadcasters to deliver the bandwidth they need for campus connectivity, camera backhaul, 3G or 4G backhaul, WiMAX backhaul, and high-definition video broadcast. The GigE series delivers 440 Mbps aggregate throughput at link ranges of up to 15 miles with guaranteed five 9s (99.999 percent) availability. By contrast, weather sensitive radios operating in the 60 to 80 GHz bands are typically limited to a range of one to three miles.


The EX-r GigE radios are available in two versions, offering maximum deployment flexibility. The EX-5r GigE features a high performance integrated antenna, while the EX-5r-c GigE includes type-N female connectors for flexible external antenna mounting. Along with native Ethernet, the EX-5r and EX-5r-c provide up to four T1/E1 ports. Exalt also provides proprietary link security and integrated AES 128- and 256-bit encryption.


The EX-r GigE series also features an 80:20 traffic symmetry control that can be used to accommodate highly asymmetric traffic such as video surveillance, broadcast, and storage backup. In addition, the EX-r GigE series provides the ability to remotely upgrade and manage the radios, user-selectable bandwidth and modulation, low latency, and advanced interference avoidance with spectral efficiency, tuning resolution, spectrum management, and system collocation.

Arcadian Deploys 700 MHz Wireless Network with Freewave

Arcadian Networks, a wireless communications carrier serving energy companies with dispersed assets (electric, gas and water utilities, and oil and gas companies), announced the delivery of its new 700 MHz wireless radio to serve the energy industry. The announcement comes just six months after the two companies announced a joint strategic partnership back in March of this year. The service uses 700 MHz radios from FreeWave Technologies.


The companies said the new network provides an opportunity for electric utilities and oil and gas companies to incorporate an advanced ISM band radio technology and wireless data solutions on a 700 MHz private, licensed and secure communication platform as a single, seamless and integrated "Smart Grid" or "Smart Field" solution. Spirent Launches Fibre Channel over Ethernet Test System

Spirent Communications introduced its Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) test solution to help assess the interaction of storage and data centre traffic over a common interface. Test engineers now have the ability to analyze a number of critical occurrences including the encapsulation of a native Fibre Channel frame into an Ethernet frame, the emergence of Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) to help ensure lossless fabric, and the effect of replacing a Fibre Channel link with MAC addresses in CEE environments. Spirent TestCenter FCoE provides support for FCoE Initialization Protocol (FIP), a control plane protocol, and Priority Flow Control (PFC), the advanced quality of service protocol for Ethernet. Ultimately, users of Spirent's FCoE solution can easily understand latency issues as well as the impact of packets which are dropped and scenarios such as loss of power.

Cisco Expands its Carrier Ethernet Portfolio

Cisco announced a number of enhancements to its Carrier Ethernet portfolio, including new line cards for its core Cisco 7600 chassis, two new access switches and a Carrier Ethernet platform for wireless backhaul applications.


Cisco has doubled aggregation service capacity with a new Ethernet Series Plus 40G line card for the Cisco 7600 Series Routers. More than 70,000 units of the Cisco 7600 are deployed worldwide. The Cisco 7600 Series 40G line card delivers line-rate multicast and unicast along with per-subscriber hierarchical quality of service (QoS).




The new line card also extends the Cisco IP over DWDM (IPoDWDM) capability to the Cisco 7600 Series Router, enabling IPoDWDM in aggregation, at the edge and in the core of a service provider's IP NGN network. Cisco recently announced IPoDWDM enhancements to its CRS-1 Carrier Routing System and XR 12000 Series Routers.


Additionally, Cisco announced enhancements to two key Ethernet access platforms. The Cisco ME 4500 Series increases platform switching capacity by 2.5 times to a total of 160 Gbps and increased its per-slot capacity four-fold to 24 Gbps while adding increased service delivery capability, investment protection, simplified operations, and a green footprint.. The Cisco ME 3400E Series, a next generation of the Cisco ME 3400 Carrier Ethernet Access Switches, is designed to enhance availability, flexibility, manageability and security for Ethernet business services.


Cisco also introduced a new cell-site router, the Cisco Mobile Wireless Router (MWR) 2941, which extends the Cisco mobile-transport-over-pseudowire (MToP) solution and supports the seamless backhaul of IP radio-access network (RAN) traffic from the cell site over Carrier Ethernet. The Cisco MWR 2941 thus makes possible a cost-effective fixed-mobile convergence. This new platform is a key component of the Cisco MToP solution, which also includes the Cisco 7600 Series Router. It allows operators to backhaul 2G, 3G and evolving 4G mobile traffic from the cell site over Carrier Ethernet.


Cisco has also announced a network-availability service-level agreement (SLA) for its Carrier Ethernet solution based on a foundation of lifecycle support services. Juniper Introduces Dynamic Services Architecture, SRX Gateways

Juniper Networks introduced its family of SRX dynamic services gateways based on a new "Dynamic Services Architecture" that aims to consolidate multiple specialized networking appliances while keeping pace with the scalability and performance requirements of next gen enterprise networks. The new SRX dynamic services gateways deliver up to 120+ Gbps firewall throughput -- an order of magnitude increase in processing speed compared to traditional firewalls. In addition to offering firewall services, the SRX device natively integrates other key services such as Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Distributed Denial of Service (DDos/DoS) protection, Network Address Translation (NAT), dynamic routing, and QoS.


Juniper said its Dynamic Services Architecture includes its dedicated dual management engine and purpose-built, carrier-class terabit speed fabric that allows for massive scale of Ethernet ports and services processing independently.



The product launch includes the Juniper Networks SRX 5600 and 5800 series dynamic services gateways, which are built on Juniper's terabit speed fabric and run the same JUNOS software as the company's other switching and routing products. By using the same single-source code base network operating system, the SRX series promises secure access to applications and services from a single management framework. The SRX can also leverage the Advanced Insight Solutions (AIS) intelligence built into JUNOS software. The AIS is the enabling technology for Junipers J-Care Technical Services that provides tools and technologies to automate the delivery of network and device information for proactive network protection and support services.


Juniper Networks SRX 5600 and 5800 dynamic services gateways are designed for large enterprise and service provider networks. The SRX 5800 dynamic services gateway can support more than 120 Gbps of stateful firewall and up to 30 Gbps of IPS, as well as 350,000 connections per second. Each deployment of SRX devices can be tailored to the specific network requirements, enabling the SRX 5800 to be configured to support more than 400 Gbps interfaces with choices of Gigabit Ethernet or 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The scalability of the services processing cards (SPC) and input/output cards (IOC) are enabled by the terabit speed fabric employed in the dynamic services gateways, which allows for massive scale of Ethernet ports and services processing. The design could handle 2 to 30 Gbps of IPS functionality with 500,000 to 4 million sessions running through the box. The SRX 5600 dynamic services gateway uses the same SPCs and IOCs as the SRX 5800 and can support up to 60 Gbps stateful firewall and 15 Gbps IPS.


The base list price for the SRX 5600 chassis starts at USD $65,000 while the list price of the SRX 5800 chassis starts at USD $68,000. The list price for the services processing cards and input/output cards start at USD $100,000.

On2's Latest Codec Claims 50% Bandwidth Savings Compared H.264

On2 Technologies launched its latest video compression format, On2 VP8, designed for web TV, IPTV and video conferencing. On2 claims its eighth generation On2 video implementation surpasses the compression efficiency and performance of every other video format on the market by employing over 40 technical innovations, among them:

  • Advanced prediction through constructed reference frames

  • Macroblock row level threading

  • Improved small area referential encoding

  • Advanced contextual entropy coding without the added complexity of bit level adaptability

  • Sparse targeted adaptive loop filtering


On2 says it can deliver broadcast quality 720p using 1.2 Mbps.


In comparison, leading H.264 implementations require as much as twice the data to deliver the same quality video as On2 VP8 (as measured in objective peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) testing). In addition, the On2 VP8 bitstream requires fewer processing cycles to decode, so users do not need to have the latest and greatest PC or mobile device to benefit from On2 VP8 video quality. Harmonic Announces Wins with Portugal Telecom, Kabel Deutschland

Portugal Telecom has deployed Harmonic's IP-based MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) compression and stream processing solutions for its nationwide launch of satellite direct-to-home (DTH) television. The new service is offered as part of Portugal Telecom's triple-play Meo package and complements its IPTV offering, also powered by Harmonic. Financial terms were not disclosed.


Portugal Telecom is one of Europe's first telcos to offer a MPEG-4 DTH service. The carrier has built a new digital video headend -- which was implemented by Novabase/OctalTV, a leading video system integrator in Portugal. The facility includes Harmonic's DiviCom Electra 7000 high definition (HD) encoders, Electra 5400 standard definition (SD) encoders, and the ProStream 1000 stream processing platform with DiviTrackIP distributed statistical multiplexing, DVB scrambling and Forward Error Correction capability. The video service is managed by Harmonic's versatile NMX Digital Service Manager.


Separately, Harmonic announced a contract to supply Kabel Deutschland (KDG) with its suite of encoding, re-encoding, multiplexing, scrambling, network management, and related training and support services for KDG's new IP-enabled headend located in Frankfurt. KDG is Germany's--and one of Europe's--largest cable operators, serving approximately 9 million subscribers in 13 of 16 German federal regions.


Harmonic said its IP-based digital video solutions enable KDG to intelligently manage content delivery across its MPEG-2 network bringing immediate bandwidth and operational efficiencies. Ipanema Technologies introduced a major update to its WAN optimization solution, adding Intelligent Acceleration capabilities. Intelligent Acceleration leverages Ipanema's Autonomic Networking System, which provides the most complete traffic management feature set on the market.


Ipanema's system by looking at layer 7 classification of data flows, intelligently inspecting traffic to differentiate between business critical and non-critical and recreational applications. The system then applies a combination of redundancy elimination, TCP acceleration and application acceleration mechanisms. In addition to large pattern caching and other protocol acceleration techniques, a dedicated zero delay processing path enables quality of experience improvements for interactive applications, including terminals (telnet, SSH, etc.) and virtualized desktops (Citrix, VMware, etc.). Real-time applications (video streaming, VoIP, etc.) may also be both compressed and protected against jitter, delay and loss. The combination of all these technologies delivers guaranteed Mean Opinion Score (MOS) and Application Quality Score (AQS) values and provides excellent WAN capacity improvements.
