Paul Baran, a pioneer in packet switching, early proponent of the ArpaNet, and serial networking entrepreneur, passed away on Saturday at his home in Palo Alto, California. He was 84. Baran is remembered for his influential work at the RAND Corporation in the 1960s which set the stage for the distributed routing design of the Internet. He went on to provide key technical roles at a number of networking companies, including Packet Technologies, StrataCom, Metricom, Ricochet, Com21 and Plater Networks.
