Xelerated Samples its Programmable Ethernet Switches

Xelerated has begun sampling its AX family of programmable Ethernet switches, designed for high-capacity access systems, including point-to-point Ethernet, GE and 10GE, as well as point-to-multipoint EPON, GPON, 10GEPON and XGPON.

Xelerated's wirespeed dataflow architecture and AX family integrates Ethernet MAC, switching, programmable packet processing and traffic management into a single chip. The AX family consists of four devices: AX340, AX310, AX240, and AX210. They differ in capacity and in traffic management capabilities. The chips enable unified processing of subscriber sessions and OAM functions -- key components of a carrier grade data plane. System vendors can now build fiber access line cards and pizza boxes supporting advanced broadband services at 50-88 Gbps duplex using a single chip.

In addition, Xelerated highlighted its support for Synchronous Ethernet and Packet Time Protocol (PTP-2008) for distribution of synchronization services. These capabilities are required in Packet Transport Network (PTN) and mobile backhaul networks, including fiber-based mobile backhaul networks in China.

Xelerated is also releasing a range of software, development tools and a hardware reference design kit (RDK). A full-featured data plane software designed specifically for the Unified Fiber Access market will also be available to reduce development time for FTTx system vendors.

Australia's NBN Hangs in the Balance

The fate of Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN), which has been described as the nation's largest infrastructure project, remains uncertain following the nearly tied election, writes columnist Adam Turner in Monday's Sydney Morning Herald.

As the author explains, the Labor party seeks to push ahead with the $43 billion national fibre rollout, designed to offer at least 100 Mbps to at least 90 percent of Australian homes. It would do so while also requiring ISP-level Internet filtering. On the other hand, the Liberals prefer a plan to invest $6 billion and relying mainly on wireless to deliver at least 12 Mbps to at least 90 percent of Australian homes. Meanwhile, the Greens prefer the fibre rollout but without ISP-level filtering. Politics will now run its course.

Lantiq Samples 65nm VDSL2 CO Chipset with Line Bonding

Lantiq unveiled its latest generation 65nm chipset for central office linecards supporting the global VDSL2 and ADSL/2/2+ standards. The design can drive data rates up to 150 Mbps/downstream and 100 Mbps/upstream on a single line.

The new VINAX V3 chipset, which boasts the smallest package size and highest channel count, gives network equipment vendors a single solution to meet carrier requirements for all xDSL deployments. Sampling is underway. Some key features include:

  • Power consumption of just 0.9W per channel to meet future green design goals for broadband infrastructure, including requirements defined in the EU Code of Conduct (CoC) on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment. VINAX V3 also is the first VDSL2 solution to work with either Class AB or low-power Class H line drivers.

  • the small package size and highest channel count (per chipset) allows double VDSL2 linecard density compared to all on-market alternatives. Each VINAX V3 chipset occupies an area of 29 mm x 29 mm for 16 channels in VDSL2 Profile 17a. An 8-channel solution for VDSL2 profile 30a requires 30 percent less area.

  • On-chip integration of a MELT controller for remote line testing by carriers with no external equipment needed.

  • VINAX V3 uses the same Analog Front End (AFE) chip to support all of the VDSL2 profiles. The same PCB design can be used for a card deployed at a DSLAM or CO (Profile 17a, supporting up to 100 Mbps downstream/50 Mbps upstream) and a MDU card running Profile 30a (up to 150 Mbps downstream/100 Mbps upstream).

  • Higher density cards, up to 72 channels compared to 24 - 48 channels with earlier generation chipsets, reduce costs for both system vendors and carriers.

Lantiq noted that its VINAX V3 also supports line bonding techniques at chip and linecard levels that boost data-rate or data-reach for home and business users and support mobile backhaul applications with up to 500 Mbps symmetrical data rates. The chipset is also ready to support full System Vectoring, a VDSL2 enhancement that will reduce crosstalk in dense cable bundles.

Lantiq Intros Wireless LAN Chips with Beamforming

Lantiq introduced its latest 802.11n WLAN chips, featuring advanced beamforming and an integrated "Thick MAC" processor for increased reach and radio coverage while maintaining links with a minimum or even zero packet-error rate performance.

Lantiq expects the WLAN market to grow significantly in the years ahead. According to In-Stat the market will see an increase in the number of Wi-Fi-enabled devices, from over 500 million in 2009 to nearly 2 billion pieces in 2014. An obstacle as the market becomes more diversified is that related WLAN solutions have to address different application needs. Its beamforming technology aims to extend the reach of WLAN devices and literally eliminate wireless dead spots for users at home.

Specifically, Lantiq claims that its designs result in about 8-10dB increased gain and an up to
300 percent increased reach compared to standard WLAN. Furthermore, the WAVE300 architecture intelligently offloads the main processor by executing all real-time and processor-intensive operations on the "Thick MAC," which results in higher throughput and more free performance on the SoC for other applications and services.

The WAVE300 family also significantly enhances the streaming of HDTV via WLAN. Compared to existing solutions where only best-effort streaming is available, the Lantiq solution enables a full wireless IP HDTV experience. The Lantiq 11n family achieves a maximum 3x3 MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) data rates up to 200 Mbps net throughput on single band implementation and dual-mode capable chips in the family reach up to 270 Mbps net throughput in concurrent mode operation.

This results in sustainable bit rates and elimination of pixel errors, allowing multiple simultaneous HD streams without packet loss. On reference systems, Lantiq demonstrated the transmission of four HD streams with 20 Mbps simultaneously with maximum reach.

In addition, Lantiq notes that its WAVE300 beamforming technology delivers high data rates directly to end user devices regardless of whether the device is "beam-forming ready" or not.

"The use of WLAN is changing. Originally developed to connect notebooks to routers,
new user scenarios such as connecting smart phones to high-data broadband applications and supporting HD video links are now required," said Ulrich Huewels, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Lantiq's CPE Business Unit. "Each scenario has specific requirements that our best-in-class WLAN solutions meet in terms of reach and Quality of Service."http://www.lantiq.com/WAVE300

Lantiq Debuts Family of Gigabit Speed Gateway Processors

Lantiq expanded its family of home gateway processors with three, new single-chip Gigabit Ethernet processors designed for DOCSIS3.0, VDSL2 and xPON access technologies.

The new "XWAY" GRX168, GRX188 and GRX288 ICs are based on the same architecture as Lantiq's existing "XWAY" ARX100 and VRX200 ADSL2+ / VDSL2 solutions, with a 32-bit MIPS CPU core and separate 32-bit Protocol Processor Engine (PPE). The IPv6-ready PPE offloads all data routing from the CPU for optimal throughput at much lower system clock speeds than alternative chips and supports QoS features that enable smooth handling for concurrent serving of IPTV, voice lines, and data on wired or wireless LANs.

The designs also enable concurrent operation of 802.11n WLAN at 2.4 and 5 GHz with aggregate throughput up to 270 Mbps. The highest performance device in the family, "XWAY" GRX288, achieves routing throughput up to 2 Gbps to meet the requirements of xPON connectivity.

Lantiq said the common architecture of the xRX family allows system builders to produce a complete portfolio of home gateway solutions, including platforms that support new "Over-The-Top" services may be linked to a residence's broadband gateway via Ethernet/Gbps Ethernet, WLAN, or the emerging G.hn standard.

"As the range of applications running on or beside residential gateways broadens, system developers face challenges to meet operator requirements and match device functionality to suit specific customer needs within tight time and budget constraints," said Ulrich Huewels, Senior Vice President and Head of the Customer Premises Equipment Business Unit at Lantiq. "The GRX family provides full flexibility for our customers to design a range of solutions while controlling R&D spending. Lantiq continues to deliver on its promise: one investment, many applications."

Additional common features across the GRX family include integrated data encryption for IPsec and energy savings features that enable designs to meet the recently defined 2011/2012 requirements of the European Union Code of Conduct (CoC) on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment.
