Ubiquisys and Public Wireless Announce 3G Metro Femtocell

Public Wireless, which specializes in wireless siting solutions, and Ubiquisys announced the commercial availability of the Public Wireless Colo-Node HSPA, the first metro femtocell solution specifically designed for outdoor hotspot locations.

An HSPA metro femtocell is a new class of device that provides a targeted, low-cost solution that provides seamless capacity relief for increasingly congested macro networks. It backhauls over the IP infrastructure already deployed -- typically cable or DSL. A single Colo-Node HSPA metro femtocell provides a range of up to 2km at pedestrian and vehicular speeds.

Each Colo-Node HSPA unit contains up to four Ubiquisys femtocell modules, each with 16 calls / 14.4Mbps HSPA data capacity. The modules are powered by Ubiquisys Femto-Engine software, which ensures adaptive compatibility with the macro network and provides handover with other femtocells and the macro network for service continuity. If the macro is replanned, the metro femto immediately adapts according to operator policies.

Motorola Focuses its LTE Self-Organizing Network (SON)

Motorola's SON solution offers revolutionary approach for OPEX, designed to avoid and reduce operating costs by simplifying the management of the LTE network.

Motorola announced several improvements to its LTE self-organizing network (SON) solution that enables greater network optimization. The company said its aim is to help operators reduce expenses from day 1 of their LTE network by leveraging advanced algorithms to optimize network resources.

Motorola's SON is a 3GPP Release 8 standards-compliant solution that draws upon the company's research in network autonomics. The solution automates previously manual steps involved in planning, deploying, optimizing and operating the network - hence reducing or eliminating the need for new operation and management resources that typically are required to manage an additional network technology (2G, 3G, plus LTE).

"In this next release, we are leveraging our heritage in radio frequency, OFDM expertise, cell designing and optimization techniques gleaned from years of real-world experience with public safety networks to offer more features and functionality, providing even greater network optimization and savings," said Fred Gabbard, vice president, Motorola Networks.

Spirent Offer LTE Device RF Testing

At CTIA Wireless 2010 in Las Vegas, Spirent Communications demonstrated its system for testing the RF performance of a pre-commercial LTE modem. For an LTE deployment to meet its technical and business objectives, devices will need to be verified against a new set of technical challenges prior to commercial launch. There are band-specific issues due to spectrum availability and the difficulties of effectively implementing Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology in a mobile device form factor. Spirent said performance testing is fundamental to the LTE ecosystem's ability to seamlessly deliver a full range of voice, data and media services, between devices, networks and multiple generations of wireless technologies, across the globe.

Spirent's LTE RF Performance solution offers an open, scalable multi-purpose test system that is expandable beyond initial testing needs to include LTE pre-conformance and validated conformance test cases.
