Cisco's Scientific Atlanta Previews D-PON Architecture

Cisco's Scientific Atlanta announced a new DOCSIS Passive Optical Network (D-PON) architecture designed to enable operators to deploy cable-centric/cable-friendly fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology.

The D-PON solution, which is especially designed for greenfield developments, features a 32-way split PON infrastructure. Scientific Atlanta said its design enables cable operators to create an effective optical budget in both directions. Downstream, the D-PON uses 1550nm technology to provide cost-effective forward optics to get to the side of the home. For the upstream traffic, technology developments at the optical network terminal (ONT) location will provide a cost effective way to support very long distances.

"We see the D-PON architecture as a valuable and cost-effective solution for cable operators as they respond to the fiber-to-the-premise requirements that most residential and commercial developers are defining for new planned communities and multi-use facilities," said Mark Palazzo, vice president and general manager, Transport and Access Networks for Scientific Atlanta.

Cisco Unveils Universal Edge QAM Solution

Cisco announced the first of a new RF Gateway (RFGW) series of Universal Edge QAM (U-EQAM) products for cable video on demand (VOD), switched digital video (SDV) and high-speed data (HSD) services.

The Cisco RF Gateway Series products are fully integrated and tested as part of the Scientific Atlanta Digital Broadband Delivery System (DBDS) and the Cisco Modular CMTS (M-CMTS) solution.

The Cisco RF Gateway 1, the first product offering from the Cisco RF Gateway Series, delivers up to 48 D-RFI-compliant QAM channels in a compact 1RU chassis with redundancy options to expand system availability. Frequency agile up to 1 GHz, the modular design supports eight QAM channels per field-replaceable RF module, with four QAM channels per RF output port.

Alcatel-Lucent Enhances Mobile Content Platform

Alcatel-Lucent released an enhanced Mobile Content Platform that mobile operators can use to create a personalized mobile shopping experience for targeted subscriber segments based on individual interests and behaviour. The Alcatel-Lucent 5965 Mobile Content Platform is a software platform that can be added to mobile networks without replacing existing content systems .

Alcatel-Lucent said its enhanced platform, along with an operator's existing content systems (e.g. video, music, games, etc.), can be used to drive marketing campaigns and gain the intelligence to help them sell more. For the end user, the ability of the operator to support content both on and off their network, enables the subscriber to quickly see the content and brands they care about regardless of content type or where it is hosted. In addition, the operator can track purchases and based on that intelligence send targeted advertisements or special offers for related entertainment or brand specific promotions such as buy one get one free or earn a free ringtone.

Navini Partners with ASUS for WiMAX Certified Modems

Navini Networks and ASUS will jointly develop certified Mobile WiMAX subscriber modems to be marketed under Navini's Ripwave brand. These modems will use chips from several vendors and will support key Mobile WiMAX features such as Beamforming and MIMO Matrix A (Space-Time Coding). The agreement includes a commitment to Mobile WiMAX interoperability certification by the WiMAX Forum certification test labs.

The companies said they plan to bring the initial selection of Ripwave Mobile WiMAX modems to market with desktop portable data modems in late 2007 and services -- enabled desktop modems to include VoIP in 2008.

Internet2 Completes 100 Gbps Coast-to-Coast Span

Internet2 has completed deployment of the first East to West Coast span on its new nationwide 100 Gbps network and is providing production IP and circuit services to the research and education community in the United States. Internet2 is now working to transition traffic from the Abilene Network onto the new platform.

In April 2007, Internet2 announced that the first major phase of the deployment was complete which included nodes in the Northeast and Midwest regions. With today's announcement, Internet2 and Level 3 have now completed deployment of important nodes across the northern span of the network including those in Washington DC, Chicago, IL, Kansas City, MO, Salt Lake City, UT, and Seattle, WA. Additionally, network rings have been completed from the Washington DC to Atlanta as well as from Kansas City to Atlanta.

Participants in the rollout include Level 3 Communications, the Global Research Network Operations Center (GRNOC) at Indiana University, and the regional network connectors.

Level 3 is deploying Infinera's Digital Optical Networking equipment across the dedicated high capacity backbone to enable dynamic optical circuit provisioning for the Internet2 community. Internet2 has also partnered with Ciena Corporation to deploy their CoreDirector Multiservice Switch for switching and sub-wavelength grooming services which allows members to customize their connections from 10 Gbps down to 51 Mbps to meet their institutional networking needs. Internet2 will deploy its current Juniper T640 routers to provide advanced IP capabilities.

  • In November 2006, A demonstration conducted by Finisar, Infinera, Internet2, Level 3 Communications, and University of California at Santa Cruz successfully transmitted a 100GbE signal from Tampa, Florida to Houston, Texas, and back again, over ten 10 Gbps channels through the Level 3 network. The transmission used an Infinera-proposed specification for 100GbE across multiple links. A single Xilinx FPGA implemented this packet numbering scheme and electrically transmitted all ten signals to ten of Finisar's 10 Gbps XFP optical transceivers, which in turn converted the signals to optics. These signals were then transmitted to an Infinera DTN DWDM system and handed off to Infinera systems within the Level 3 network where it was transmitted across the Level 3 network to Houston and back. The pre-standard specification for 100GbE guaranteed the ordering of the packets and quality of the signal across 10 Gbps wavelengths. Infinera, which is showcasing the technology at this week's SC06 International Conference in Tampa, said the experiment demonstrated that it is possible for carriers to offer 100GbE services across today's 10 Gbps infrastructure.

Motorola Debuts 10Gbps AdvancedTCA Blade Based on Multi-core Cavium Processor

Motorola introduced an AdvancedTCA (ATCA) blade that leverages two sixteen-core processors with built-in hardware acceleration engines to deliver 10Gbps packet forwarding throughput. The blade uses Cavium Networks' Octeon processors and Wind River's Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition (PNE-LE) operating system. The many-core processor with a standard Carrier Grade Linux programming environment allows both conventional programs and packet processing tasks to be handled on the same hardware.

Target applications include data plane elements that employ deep packet inspection, such as network gateway and edge functions for 4G wireless and IPTV.

Key ATCA-9301 blade features include:

  • Dual Cavium OCTEON CN5860 Many-Core Processing Units (MPUs) with sixteen cores each

  • Hardware acceleration for security, de-/compression, packet queuing, and scheduling functions

  • Wind River PNE-LE Carrier Grade Linux operating environment 10-port Gigabit Ethernet Network Interfaces for operational flexibility

"The ATCA-9301 blade's Cavium-based architecture permits packet processing tasks such as forwarding, packet inspection, and security functions to be done in parallel with control plane tasks at a lower total cost of ownership. This will help providers to spend more time developing the broadest set of applications on a single platform and less time dealing with the power and cooling challenges of conventional communications processors," said Jorge Magalhaes, Director of Marketing, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola.

The ATCA-9301 is available as standalone product or as part of Motorola's Centellis 4000 series of ATCA-based communications servers.
