Solarflare Announces 10 Gigabit Controller Family, 10GBASE-T LOM Chip

Solarflare Communications introduced its new family of 10GbE controllers, including the industry's first 10GBASE-T LAN-on-motherboard (LOM) product.

This new product family, which represents the company's third-generation 10GbE products consists of the Solarstorm SFL9022 dual-port LOM, the Solarstorm SFL9021 single-port LOM and the Solarstorm SFC9020 dual-port controller.

Solarflare said its 10GbE controllers achieve sub-6 microsecond latency, enabling the use of 10GbE interfaces in high-performance, real-time applications, such as high-frequency trading, Web 2.0 and cloud computing applications.

The SFC9000 family also features a fully-virtualized architecture, which supports 10x the number of virtual machines and virtual NICs as leading competitors, and the ability to provision and manage IP flows to ensure optimal application performance and network resource utilization. The family also includes the world's first fully-integrated 10GBASE-T LOM, which enables the lowest cost, backwards compatibility with 1000 Mbps Ethernet and support for installed cabling media. These are all critical requirements for broad-based adoption in industry standard and volume servers. Solarflare's controllers deliver 37 Gbps aggregate bandwidth and a full array of stateless offloads.

Other key features include:

  • Less than half the power consumption of 1oGbE solutions, enabling 10GbE to be deployed in high-density servers with limited airflow and power budget

  • Support for 10x the number of virtual machines and virtual NICs as the leading competitors, and the ability to provision and manage IP flows to ensure optimal application performance and network resource utilization

  • 37Gbps aggregate bandwidth and a full array of stateless offloads that are fully compliant with leading operating systems and hypervisors

  • 10GBASE-T LOM, enabling backwards compatibility to 1GbE

  • Driver support for Microsoft Windows, Redhat and SUSE Linux, Solaris, VMware and Citrix XenServer.

The SFC9000 family is now sampling.

Level 3 Requests Federal Stimulus Funding

Level 3 Communications has applied for federal stimulus funding to expand broadband access under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The applications propose $15 million in grant funding and an additional $5 million in Level 3 matching funds to create new access points or "middle mile" connections to the Level 3 network in more than 50 rural markets in six states.

Level 3 said it would use grant funding and its own capital to deploy new equipment in existing buildings located on the Level 3 network in rural areas. The additional equipment would create middle mile connections to the Level 3 network between major metropolitan markets for more efficient delivery of Internet, voice, data and video services to local or "last mile" providers, including telephone, cable and wireless companies, as well as governments and educational institutions.

The addition of middle mile connections to a neutral carrier such as Level 3 offers an alternative to incumbent providers and establishes a platform forhttp://www.Level3.com/Stimulus

Microsoft Unveils OneApp for Feature Mobile Phones

Microsoft unveiled OneApp, a new software application that enables feature phones -- commonly found in emerging markets -- to access mobile apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live Messenger, and other popular apps and games.

OneApp is a lightweight software client with an on-phone footprint of just 150 KB. It dynamically launches just the parts of a mobile app that a person wants to use, eliminating additional installation time and the need for a person to store all of the mobile apps on the phone. OneApp includes cloud services that help offload processing and storage from the phone to the Internet, improving overall performance. Software developers can write new apps for OneApp using industry standards such as JavaScript and XML. An SDK will be launched later this year. Microsoft said OneApp is optimized for GPRS.

Blue Label Telecoms in South Africa will use OneApp as part of a new and upcoming release of its mibli consumer mobile service. As a result of a strategic relationship with Blue Label Telecoms, mibli, powered by Microsoft OneApp, will ship with more than a dozen new mobile apps. Additional apps will be available in the future, focusing on areas such as healthcare. Consumers in South Africa can download and install mibli for free.

Microsoft said OneApp complements its existing mobile strategy by bringing mobile apps and services to feature phones in emerging markets.

Cisco Doubles Line Card Density of ASR 9000

Cisco introduced a single-slot 16 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) line card that effectively doubles the density of its flagship edge router, the Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series. Cisco also announced Telstra as a new ASR 9000 customer.

Cisco introduced the ASR-9000 in November 2008 and shipped the first systems to select customers in March 2009.

The ASR 9000 platform, which entered general release in May 2009, offers 6.4 terabits per second of total capacity and 400 Gbps capacity per slot, enabling to it accept the new 16 x 10 GE card and grow to 320 x 10GE, or 32 x 100 GE per system. Cisco has not yet announced 100 Gbps interfaces for the platform, saying that an announcement is likely to come when the 100G standard gets closer to ratification.

Cisco said its ASR 9000 is designed for video services over next-gen access networks in the "zettabyte era." The platform leverages the same 40-core "QuantumFlow" processor that is featured in the smaller capacity Cisco ASR 1000 edge router. It also incorporates the Cisco Advanced Video Services Module (AVSM), which provides terabytes of streaming capacity at the aggregation edge while simultaneously offering content caching, ad insertion, fast channel change and error correction. The platform could also be used for aggregating backhaul traffic in a 3G/4G network.

Cisco predicts global IP traffic is expected to increase fivefold from 2008 to 2013, approaching 56 exabytes per month in 2013, up from approximately 9 exabytes per month in 2008.  IP traffic in Asia Pacific will lead the geographic areas. It is forecast to reach 21 exabytes per month in 2013, accounting for more than one third of the global traffic.
Telstra is deploying Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series (ASR) as their carrier Ethernet platform supporting a range of bandwidth-intensive, content-based services such as video.  Financial terms were not disclosed. In addition to Telstra, announced customers for the ASR 9000 include Cogent, Softbank, and Verizon Wireless
"We are honored that Telstra has chosen the Cisco ASR 9000 for its network edge," said Praveen Akkiraju, vice president and general manager, service provider business unit, Cisco.  "The Cisco ASR 9000 at the edge, coupled with the Cisco CRS-1 carrier routing system, helps enable Telstra to deliver a broader range of innovative offerings in less time, with more capacity and using less energy."http://www.cisco.com
