Fujitsu and Accelecom deliver Middle Mile for Kentucky

Fujitsu Network Communications is partnering with Accelecom to connect businesses throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky with a high-speed fiber broadband network.

Accelecom leverages dark fiber from the KentuckyWired middle mile network, which connects all 120 counties and provides commercial access to 100G symmetrical data services. Kentucky is the first U.S. state to build an open-access, fiber optic network reaching every county. The Commonwealth, which in 2017 ranked 47th in the U.S. for broadband speeds and capacity, now ranks third in the nation for internet speeds.

Fujitsu serves as the network systems integrator for the project and was responsible for network design, deployment, testing and turn-up of the network, including specifying, sourcing and integrating multi-vendor optical equipment and software. 

The next-generation broadband network incorporates Fujitsu 1FINITY Lambda blades, as well as 1FINITY T300 transport blades, to enable ROADM functionality, reliability and spectral efficiency. Network management is simplified with the Virtuora Network Control software-defined network (SDN) solution. Additionally, Fujitsu provided migration and deployment services to install 21 new huts to house the optical equipment.

NTT DOCOMO announces 6G partnerships

NTT DOCOMO and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) announced partnerships with Fujitsu, NEC, and Nokia to conduct experimental trials of new mobile communications technologies for the targeted commercial launch of 6G services by around 2030.

Launching the envisioned 6G services will require verification of numerous new mobile technologies, including those needed to newly use frequencies in the millimeter and sub-terahertz (above 6 GHz) bands, in addition to bands for existing 5G services. The trials are also expected to verify AI-based wireless transmission methods. DOCOMO and NTT will jointly conduct experimental trials with the three vendors, focusing on mobile technologies using new 6G frequency bands and AI-based wireless technology among these various mobile technologies.

The new 6G system will greatly exceed the performance of 5G and simultaneously provide high-speed, large capacity, and low latency capabilities, use new high-frequency bands such as sub-terahertz bands above 100 GHz, expand communication coverage in the sky, at sea and in space, and enable both ultra-low-power consumption and low-cost communications.

Naoki Tani, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at DOCOMO, said: "6G studies are progressing two or three years ahead of that of 5G. From this early stage, we would like to collaborate with world-leading global vendors to proactively demonstrate breakthrough concepts and technologies and promote them to the world."

DOCOMO and NTT will begin conducting indoor trials within the fiscal year ending in March 2023, and outdoor trials will begin in the following fiscal year. The trials are expected to verify concepts proposed so far by DOCOMO and NTT and will be reported in global research groups, international conferences and standardization activities related to 6G, and will serve as a foundation for more advanced technologies.

Vívaro Telecom picks Fujitsu for optical network in Texas

Vívaro Telecom (formerly Marcatel) has selected Fujitsu Network Communications' 1FINITY platform for a greenfield, DWDM network deployment in Texas to enhance high-speed data services between the U.S. and Mexico. The new network, which will operate between Dallas and McAllen, Texas, is the latest Vívaro Telecom network to be deployed in the U.S.

The next-generation ROADM network will include 1FINITY Lambda blades, as well as 1INITY T700 transport blades, the newest addition to the 1FINITY platform capable of delivering up to 1.6 Tbps capacity per blade. 

Fujitsu's 1FINITY platform features colorless, directionless ROADM technology and Flex-grid functionality. Vívaro Telecom can manage both the new network and their existing infrastructure with the Virtuoso NC software-defined network (SDN) solution.

Fujitsu Network Communications announces new CEO

Fujitsu Network Communications named Shingo Mizuno as its new president and CEO, replacing Doug Moore, who has been appointed CEO of Fujitsu North America.

Mizuno is currently Global Head of the Fujitsu Network Business and has been with Fujitsu for 33 years. He currently serves on the board of directors for the IOWN Global Forum, and contributes to industry committees for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Association of Radio Industries and Business (ARIB), Photonics Electronics Technology Research Association (PETRA) and the ITU-Association of Japan. Mizuno holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Tokyo University of Science.

FiberLight upgrades with Fujitsu's 1FINITY

FiberLight, which operates more than 17,000 miles of fiber networks in more than 30 U.S. metropolitan areas, has again selected the modular Fujitsu 1FINITY platform to enhance their high-bandwidth fiber network. 

Upgrades include deployment of 1FINITY T700 transport blades and L130/ L140 ROADM blades to empower improved performance, efficiency and speeds up to 400G.

Fujitsu said the installation enables FiberLight to deliver high-capacity 400 GbE services over their existing fiber network serving both major and rural markets throughout Texas.  The latest 1FINITY innovation, the T700 transport blade enables flexible, cost-effective C-Band and L-Band optical connections to be deployed across new or existing regional and metro networks. With sophisticated modulation techniques and variable Forward Error Correction (FEC), the T700 blade delivers exceptional balance of reach and capacity, extending the life of legacy infrastructure with 200, 300 and 400 Gbps line rates and up to 1.6 Tbps capacity per blade. FiberLight is the first network operator in the U.S. to deploy the T700 transport blade in combination with the L130/ L140 Colorless-Directionless-Contentionless (CDC) ROADM solution.

Ekinops signs reseller partnership with Fujitsu

Fujitsu will integrate the Ekinops next generation OTN compact modular switches into the Fujitsu 1FINITY open optical networking portfolio.

The Ekinops ETSc, an OTN compact platform optimized for metro and metro-access services, provides greater scaling capacity for optical networks from 1GbE to 200G, while giving service providers more choice in open networking solutions. Virtuora, Fujitsu's multi-layer, multi-vendor control and orchestration software platform, will provide automated and seamless network operations for the Ekinops platform. In addition to scalability and flexibility, the compact form factor delivers operational efficiencies to service providers.

Fujitsu debuts 100G QSFP28 ZR4 transceiver

Fujitsu Optical Components (FOC) introduced a low-power 100G QSFP28 ZR4 optical transceiver designed with an 80-km reach.

The transceiver enables direct connection between routers/switches without the use of optical amplifiers, thereby contributing to the reduction of overall network equipment costs and energy savings. 

Key features

  • Supports high optical output power, accommodates OTU4 signal.  Optical output power (Tx Power [OMA]) was increased to + 2.5 dBm. In addition, while maintaining the same power consumption (5.5W), FOC added the high optical output power + 3.5 dBm specification to the product lineup, making it possible to support more optical networks. 
  • FOC has also specified a 100G OTU4 signal (111.8 Gbps), which is faster than 100G Ethernet signals (103.1 Gbps transmission data rate), and added this dual-rate variant to the product lineup so as to enable the provisioning of services based on the OTN standards.
  • Complies with standards for form factor, electrical interface, and support functions. The 100G QSFP28 ZR4 transceiver has a common platform design with the 100G QSFP28 ER4 for 40 km transmission and conforms to the SFF-8661, 8679 and IEEE 100GBASE-ER4 standard for 40 km transmission and the ITU-T G. 959.1 OTU4 standard (4L1-9 C1F).

KT, NTT DOCOMO and Fujitsu test O-RAN in Korea

The KT Research and Development Center in Seoul, South Korea, has tested Fujitsu’s Open RAN based 5G base station equipment in trials for open fronthaul. NTT DOCOMO provided Fujitsu with technical support throughout the project. With the construction of this new test facility, KT will accelerate the introduction of Open RAN technology to Korea’s 5G network.

The three companies have concluded a Memorandum of Understanding centered on the introduction of software-defined virtualized RAN and RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs).

The three companies agreed to cooperate towards further activities including the construction of an O-RAN test facility and multi-vendor interoperability testing in Korea.

KT is considering the introduction of multi-vendor Open RAN to reduce equipment procurement and construction costs and to achieve flexible network construction capabilities. To this end, KT and Fujitsu constructed an Open RAN verification facility and conducted testing for multi-vendor interoperability with O-RAN open fronthaul in October 2021.

NEC and Fujitsu collaborate on O-RAN testing

NEC and Fujitsu are collaborating on interoperability testing between 5G base station equipment conforming to O-RAN specifications.

The initiative will be implemented as part of the "Post 5G Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project" under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan. 

Through this initiative, NEC, Fujitsu, and NEDO will accelerate the global reach of base station equipment that conforms to O-RAN specifications and contribute to stimulating growth and innovation in the open 5G market.

NEC is conducting trials at its Open RAN laboratory in NEC Europe Ltd., London, U.K., while Fujitsu is doing so at its laboratory hosted at Fujitsu Network Communications, a Fujitsu group company in the United States.

Colorado's FastTrack Comm selects Fujitsu for optical transport


FastTrack Communications selected Fujitsu Network Communications' modular 1FINITY optical networking platform to upgrade their fiber optic network.

FastTrack Communications, which was formed in 2002 by two rural electrical cooperatives and is based in Durango, Colorado, is deploying a disaggregated architecture based on the 1FINITY platform to boost network capacity, agility and scalability.

The network upgrade includes the 1FINITY Lambda and Transport series blades deployed in a Colorless, Directionless ROADM (CD ROADM) network with in-line amplification and up to 200G data rates - matching functionality to site requirements and a scalable pay-as-you-grow approach. Fujitsu and HFR Networks enhance Smart xHaul for 5G transport

 Fujitsu Network Communications and HFR Networks introduced new and enhanced Smart xHaul solutions for 5G network transport. Enhancements include new  optics for the M6424 time sensitive networking (TSN) aggregation and transport switch — which is in use with a Tier 1 U.S. service provider as the lead customer — and the new M6208E TSN switch for hardened environments.

The enhanced M6424 delivers up to 400G transport capacity with the new xWave 400G optical solution for high-capacity TSN with precision time protocol (PTP) over a single fiber. This significant increase in transport efficiency results in an 8 to 1 fiber savings, with a pay-as-you-grow solution provisioned in 100G increments.


Moreover, the M6424 switch includes integration of 10Gbps/25Gbps Smart Tunable Optics, offering a powerful “semi-active” transport solution when cell site power and space challenges exist. The M6424 utilizes its management software to access the smart self-tuning optics for automated turn-up and remote visibility at passive cell sites, allowing proactive Operations, Administration and Management (OA&M) capabilities, resulting in high availability services support. In this way, optics can be disaggregated from the transport system and plugged directly into radios at space constrained or zoning-restricted locations such as lamp posts, utility poles or building facades, solving challenges related to power, aesthetics and space.

The new M6208E switch is a scalable, high-capacity TSN switch in a compact, hardened enclosure for outside plant wall or pole mounting, built for rapid site deployment in challenging conditions ranging from rural cell sites to constrained environments, such as subways or venues. The versatile M6208E reduces fiber needs by enabling service blending across legacy 3G or 4G LTE common public radio interface (CPRI) infrastructure at remote radio heads with 5G enhanced CPRI traffic and Ethernet services on a common RAN.

HFR and Fujitsu debut 25G Smart Tunable Optics for 5G transport

HFR Networks and Fujitsu Network Communications introduced 25G Smart Tunable Optics as part of Fujitsu's flexiHaul portfolio of solutions. HFR Networks’ Smart Tunable Optics seamlessly integrate into Fujitsu's flagship flexiHaul transponder based and Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) portfolios. 

The Smart Tunable Optical transceivers automatically self-tune to the correct wavelength without intervention by the host system or a field technician. This automates fast service turn-up, and enables full operational visibility on xHaul transport links for proactive management of active or passive remote sites. Smart Tunable Optics are also available supporting 10G.

Fujitsu says 5G fronthaul is driving 25G transport as an essential requirement, including the ability to combine existing 10G services across a variety of equipment and technologies from different RAN suppliers. Intelligent self-tuning optics enable network operators to maximize valuable fiber capacity while saving on space and power at remote sites by using only passive components. Fujitsu teams up with the TIP on O-RAN compliant 5G radios


Fujitsu Network Communications is collaborating with the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) OpenRAN Project Group to accelerate adoption of open radio access network infrastructu. 

Specifically, Fujitsu is contributing 5G multi-band O-RAN compliant radios to the TIP OpenRAN project group. The dual-band and tri-band radios are certified by Fujitsu and listed on the TIP Exchange marketplace, allowing service providers to quickly find interoperable solutions and reference designs for 4G and 5G networks.

Fujitsu samples 100GBaud coherent receivers for 800G

Fujitsu Optical Components Limited (FOC) is launching a 100GBaud integrated coherent receiver for applications in 800 Gbps optical networks.

The device integrates 90-degree hybrid, balanced receivers, polarization beam splitter and VOA function into a small, single package using micro assembly technology. Sampling is underway.

The 100GBaud integrated coherent receiver supports three times higher symbol rates than the traditional 32GBaud integrated coherent receiver. This supports flexible QPSK and xQAM modulation methods from 32GBaud to 100GBaud, enabling optimization of the transmission distance and capacity of optical networks.

FOC notes that it is already developing  products for 130 GBaud and beyond.

Fujitsu Network Communications demos open optical network control with TIP

 Fujitsu Network Communications demonstrated open optical network control in collaboration with the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Converged Architectures for Network Disaggregation & Integration (CANDI) project group. The proof of concept, conducted in collaboration with the project team including Tier 1 network operators, demonstrates end-to-end service operations and network visibility across multi-vendor optical networks.

Fujitsu contributed the Virtuora Network Controller (NC) to enable multi-vendor SDN control across a partially disaggregated Open Line System (OLS), helping to define real-world operator use cases to accelerate adoption of open converged and packet optical networks. The controller supports both a standard T-API interface for the ROADM network as well as an OpenConfig interface for the transponders.


The proof of concept is the first integration of a commercial SDN controller based on the OpenDaylight platform, along with GNPy, the only vendor-neutral, open-source optical planning tool for optical reach verification. Virtuora NC supports both OLS domain control and optical SDN control, leveraging OpenDaylight to deliver a blend of openness and out-of-the-box capabilities for optical network design, installation, service creation, assurance and maintenance.

Fujitsu Network Communications said ths proof of concept demonstrates how flexible, modular optical hardware products and software control solutions based on open-source platforms provide a unique offering that achieves immediate needs for new network infrastructure, while positioning the network itself for migration to open networking in phases. This inherent flexibility allows communications service providers to deploy an optical architecture today and achieve an open network architecture tomorrow.

Fujitsu enters strategic agreement with AWS


Fujitsu  announced a Strategic Collaboration Agreement with Amazon Web Services to accelerate the digital transformation (DX) of the mobility industry in Japan.  Fujitsu will integrate its Digital Twin and security solutions for the mobility industry with AWS' cloud services.

Fujitsu will work with the AWS Professional Services Team  to help companies in the mobility industry develop and operate new systems, as well as modernize their existing systems. Fujitsu will also boost its own system development capabilities by certifying an additional 750 engineers on AWS. The companies are targeting industries such as automobile manufacturers, insurance providers, and logistics companies.

NTT and Fujitsu focus on silicon photonics manufacturing

 NTT Corporation (NTT) and Fujitsu Limited announced a strategic alliance focused on innovations for the “Realization of a Sustainable Digital Society,” including the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) initiative.

A key focus is on establishing photonics-electronics convergence manufacturing technology. Key points:

  • NTT Electronics Corporation (NEL), which develops hardware products utilizing NTT R&D’ s advanced device technologies, will acquire a 66.6% stake in Fujitsu Advanced Technologies Limited (FATEC), which possesses semiconductor mounting technology. The business will be renamed NTT Electronics Cross Technologies Corporation, and commence operations on June 1, 2021.
  • By the end of fiscal year 2022, the new company will start to provide compact, power-saving optical communication co-packages (2) that integrate digital coherent optical communications LSIs and COSA (Coherent Optical Sub Assembly) (3) based on silicon photonics technology. 
  • The new company plans introduce a new architecture for applying ultra-high-speed, compact, and low-cost photonics-electronics convergence devices on mobile communication products, as well as a wide range of other ICT products, starting with Fujitsu’s 5G base stations. 

NTT and Fujitsu also agreed to promote open optical transport and mobile communications. Specifically, the companies are promoting an open whitebox solutions running general-purpose software that can be supported in multiple vendor environments.

In the field of optical transport communications, Fujitsu and NTT will work together to plan new optical devices based on an open architecture, build system products developed by Fujitsu, and control supply chain management. The two partners aim to expand the business globally with a strategic entry into the data center interconnect market, where demand is expected to grow and the adoption of open architectures is accelerating.

In the mobile communications field, the two companies will study the development and promotion of open interface-based technologies, as well as the development of global businesses based on the results of these activities. The first step is to develop technologies that can be established globally with a variety of partners through avenues including the "5G Open RAN Ecosystem" launched by NTT DOCOMO. For example, the two companies will work on measures to improve performance, which remains a challenge for expanding the adoption of virtualized radio access network (vRAN) and develop control technologies to optimize radio access networks. NTT will use these technologies to further enhance mobile network infrastructure in preparation for full-scale 5G deployment. Technology developed through the collaboration will be used by telecommunications carriers on a global basis through the "5G Open RAN Ecosystem" initiative and other means.

NTT and Fujitsu will work to develop innovative computing technologies by combining the photonics-electronics convergence technology being researched and developed by NTT with technologies developed by Fujitsu for the supercomputer "Fugaku". By leveraging this technology, the partners will be able to securely link a wide variety of real-world data, efficiently and quickly realize services that create value for diverse stakeholders, while simultaneously contributing to a more sustainable future by maximizing energy efficiency.

Fujitsu has established an "IOWN/6G Platform Development Office" with the aim of developing technologies for the IOWN initiative and the 6G era.

Fujitsu supplies FTTP in rural Virginia


Fujitsu Network Communications was selected to be the prime broadband network and integration partner for a 53-mile fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband network for Craig-Botetourt Rural Electric Cooperative (CBEC) headquartered in New Castle, Virginia. Fujitsu is responsible for network design and build-out, multivendor equipment and software procurement, network integration, testing and service turn-up. 

The new fiber broadband network, which passes 700 addresses, makes it possible for CBEC to serve the essential connectivity needs of their cooperative members, delivering symmetrical, high-speed internet services up to 300 Mbps and digital voice services. Since the launch on February 1, 2021, the co-op already has 155 new subscribers.

Fujitu leverages Xilinx for O-RAN 5G radios

Xilinx is supplying its  UltraScale+ technology to Fujitsu Limited for its O-RAN 5G radio units (O-RUs), which will be deployed in the first O-RAN-compliant 5G greenfield networks in the U.S. Fujitsu is also evaluating Xilinx RFSoC technology to further reduce cost and power consumption for additional future site deployments.

HFR and Fujitsu debut 25G Smart Tunable Optics for 5G transport

HFR Networks and Fujitsu Network Communications introduced 25G Smart Tunable Optics as part of Fujitsu's flexiHaul portfolio of solutions. HFR Networks’ Smart Tunable Optics seamlessly integrate into Fujitsu's flagship flexiHaul transponder based and Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) portfolios. 

The Smart Tunable Optical transceivers automatically self-tune to the correct wavelength without intervention by the host system or a field technician. This automates fast service turn-up, and enables full operational visibility on xHaul transport links for proactive management of active or passive remote sites. Smart Tunable Optics are also available supporting 10G.

Fujitsu says 5G fronthaul is driving 25G transport as an essential requirement, including the ability to combine existing 10G services across a variety of equipment and technologies from different RAN suppliers. Intelligent self-tuning optics enable network operators to maximize valuable fiber capacity while saving on space and power at remote sites by using only passive components. This is critical for operators around the world as they continue deploying additional LTE capacity in parallel with quickly ramping new 5G services.
