At CTIA Wireless 2010 in Las Vegas, Sprint and HTC Corporation unveiled the first 3G/4G Android handset.

The HTC EVO 4G, which will be offered exclusively by Sprint beginning this summer, is designed for multimedia experiences at 4G speeds. Key features include a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, dual cameras - an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, built-in mobile hotspot functionality for up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices, and an HDMI port for displaying downloaded or captured video on a TV screen. Text messaging and email composition feature built-in voice-to-text technology.
Sprint also has released a 4G developer guide explaining how to develop on an Android 2.1 handset and how to take advantage of 4G and unique hardware/software capabilities, including how to use a forward-facing camera in an app; how to use HDMI output; and how to build in network detection (3G, 4G or Wi-Fi) to optimize quality of data in an app. The Sprint 4G developer also will include sample apps and source code that highlight these features. It will supplement the Android 2.1 SDK. As a charter member of the Open Handset Alliance, Sprint is actively engaged with the Android community.

The company previously indicated that some of its new 4G markets scheduled to launch in 2010 include: New York City, Houston, Boston, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Denver, Minneapolis, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Additional markets to be reached with the 2010 rollout include Los Angeles, Miami, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Salt Lake City. Additional cities will be announced later this year. As previously announced, Clearwire will launch service in Houston in the coming weeks and the majority of the new 4G markets will launch toward the end of the year.
