  • In May 2003, Occam Networks introduced its new BLC 6000 Broadband Loop Carrier System for delivery of voice, data and video services using Gigabit Ethernet transport. Occam's BLC 6000 is a modular loop carrier system designed to eliminate the need for additional pieces of access equipment such as a DSLAM, Ethernet switch, Optical Add Drop multiplexor and VoIP gateway. The platform supports TDM services, such as lifeline POTS and T1s, as well as an IP Service Delivery model for the delivery of video and softswitch-controlled voice services. IP support includes Internet Group Multicast Protocol (IGMP) and Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP). The BLC 6000 System can scale from 24 to thousands of subscribers, sharing blades across a variety of chassis sizes.

Transcom Enhanced Services Chooses Veraz to Replace Cisco Gateways

Transcom Enhanced Services, a wholesale provider of domestic and international IP communications, purchased 87,000 ports of Veraz' I-Gate 4000 and I-Gate 4000 Pro media gateways to replace its installed base of Cisco System's media gateways across the US. Transcom is also increasing the softswitch capacity of its previously deployed Veraz ControlSwitch to 87,000 ports. Transcom is rolling out a Global Carrier Peering (GCP) architecture that effectively doubles its VoIP capacity. The GCP solution enables Transcom to support traffic processing and delivery using any combination of signaling: H.323-H.323, H.323-SS7, H.323-PRI, SIP-SIP, SIP-H.323, SIP-PRI, SIP-SS7, SS7-PRI, SS7-SS7, PRI-PRI, and others. All of these types of calls are managed using a common routing, call control, billing and management framework from a central location and eliminates the limitations of H.323 Gatekeeper-centric H.323-H.323 peering. Financial terms were not disclosed.

MCI Counters AT&T Objection to Chapter 11 Reorganization Plan

MCI described the latest charges of fraud regarding its call termination practices as "baseless" and accused AT&T of attempting to "delay and derail" its Chapter 11 reorganization efforts. MCI said its own analysis and a preliminary review conducted by the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP indicate that its call routing practices are legal and comply with regulatory requirements. In a court filing seeking to dismiss AT&T's objections, MCI countered a number of AT&T's specific legal claims. Specifically:

  • MCI stated that its contract with Onvoy -- a provider of "least-cost routing" services was "completely legal and commonplace" and that there is nothing even remotely illegal about Onvoy's routing of domestic traffic via Canada. MCI noted that AT&T engages in the same types of arrangements;

  • MCI claimed that it does not and has not itself routed traffic through Canada (though there would be nothing illegal about such a practice if it did) ;

  • MCI refuted claims by AT&T that MCI has avoided the costs of access charges and that AT&T is not fairly compensated for its role in terminating traffic;

  • MCI stated that it has certain government contracts that require it to carry classified traffic in a secure manner and none of that traffic is or was routed through Onvoy;

  • Finally, MCI described AT&T's invocation of the 'national interest' as a "transparent attempt to promote its corporate interest in shutting down one of its competitors by publishing malicious fabrications."

China's MII Approves Luminous Networks' PacketWave Metro RPR

China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has certified Luminous Networks' PacketWave E-Series platform for metropolitan area networks. Luminous' PacketWave E-Series is a low-cost multiservice transport platform for 1 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps metro rings. Like Luminous Networks' existing M-series (metro core) and C-Series (metro access) platforms, the PacketWave E500 leverages RPR layer 2 technology to integrate Ethernet and TDM services using ring architectures that are cheaper and more bandwidth-efficient than SONET/SDH. RPR. The MII approval follows an extensive battery of voice and data tests performed by the MII in their Beijing lab. These included tests of PacketWave's throughput, latency, quality of service and network management. The PacketWave E-Series platform also successfully passed tests on the delivery of traditional Ethernet services; transparent Ethernet lease line services; TDM lease line services and MPLS services while experiencing heavy emulated Ethernet, TDM and PBX voice traffic. Luminous Networks said it is the first company with an entire product line based on Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology to receive MII approval.
