Freescale Expands QorIQ Qonverge Base Station-on-Chip for Metro Cells

Freescale Semiconductor is expanding its line of QorIQ Qonverge base station silicon with a new processor designed for LTE, LTE Advanced and WCDMA (HSPA+) for up to 250 users in a metro cell.



The new QorIQ Qonverge B4420 baseband processor, which is built on 28nm process technology and Fre escale's common QorIQ base station architecture, is designed for high-capacity metropolitan areas and enhanced outdoor coverage where macrocell coverage is insufficient. It provides up to two 20 MHz LTE sectors, 600 Mbps of throughput and relay support with optimal power/cost ratios. The metrocell B4420 is software-compatible with the small cell and macrocell members of the QorIQ Qonverge portfolio, and it is package- and pin-compatible with the QorIQ Qonverge B4860 device.



The B4420 integrates two dual-threaded Power Architecture e6500 processor cores running at 1.6 GHz and two StarCore digital signal processor (DSP) SC3900 flexible vector processor cores running at 1.2 GHz, along with the ultra-high performance Multi-Accelerator Platform Engine for Baseband (MAPLE-B) for Layer-1 acceleration, and accelerators for Layer-2 and transport processing. Freescale plans to offer samples of QorIQ Qonverge B4420 devices in Q3 2012.

It is implemented in 28nm technology and offers more than 21 GHz of raw programmable performance. The macrocell SoC integrates four dual-thread, 64-bit e6500 Power Architecture cores with AltiVec SIMD engines running at up to 1.8 GHz. The e6500 core is ideal for Layer 2, control and transport processing, and incorporates an enhanced version of the proven, high performance and widely adopted AltiVec vector processing unit, which boosts performance for Layer 2 scheduling algorithms. The e6500 core has achieved the highest CoreMark® benchmark performance-per-watt profile ever recorded for an embedded processor. The B4860 also integrates six all-new, high performance SC3900 StarCore FVP cores running at 1.2 GHz. Together, these technologies provide a balanced, programmable architecture for all baseband digital processing layers for next-generation base stations.



The macro base station chip extends Freescale’s QorIQ Qonverge small cell products, which were first introduced a year ago. The QorIQ Qonverge portfolio shares a common architecture integrating Power Architecture microprocessors, StarCore digital signal processors and wireless acceleration technologies on a single chip.



Freescale notes that the new B4860 is one of the first single-chip LTE base station products to support three sectors of 20 MHz, and is designed to replace today’s channel cards that can include up to six discrete devices. In addition to simplified design and board-level efficiency resulting from reduced part counts, the B4860 provides 4x cost reduction and 3x power reduction compared to similarly deployed discrete solutions. The chip also supports Multi-RAT (i.e. multi-standard) and Multimode (i.e. LTE-A, LTE and WCDMA) standards simultaneously.



The company cited Fujitsu and Alcatel-Lucent as lead customers for the key technologies powering the QorIQ Qonverge B4860 baseband processor. Alcatel Lucent is already planning lightRadio base station designs built on Freescale’s QorIQ Qonverge B4860.

Astute Raises $12 Million for Networked Performance Flash

Astute Networks, a start-up based in San Diego, raised $12 million in Series B funding for its "Networked Performance Flash" for accelerating virtualized server, desktop, and cloud computing environments.



Astute Networks has developed a patented "DataPump Engine" and Networked Performance Flash architecture to accelerate virtual machine and application performance on major virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, and Red Hat RHEV.



The new funding was led by Samsung Venture Investment Corporation (SVIC), the investment arm of Samsung Group, the world’s leading provider of NAND Flash memory. Current investors Tallwood Venture Capital and Narra Venture Capital also contributed to the round, with participation from new investors Ayala Capital, ICCP Venture Partners, and TIFF (The Investment Fund for Foundations).

Google Acquires Magnolia Broadband's Beam Forming Patents

Google has acquired Magnolia Broadband's beam forming Mobile Transmit Diversity ("MTD") patent portfolio. Financial terms were not disclosed.



Magnolia Broadband said the patents cover methods for increasing spectrum utilization (network capacity), expanding coverage, improving uplink transmission speeds at the cell edge, and improving device battery life. The technology could be applied to smartphones, tablets and other broadband devices.



Osmo Hautanen, CEO of Magnolia Broadband, said; "We believe that Google's acquisition of our more than 50 Mobile Transmit Diversity beam forming technology patents underlines the need for such a technology in mobile broadband devices." Mr. Hautanen further explained Magnolia Broadband's continued vision: "The software, which can be embedded into any mobile broadband device remains the property of Magnolia Broadband and will be made available to mobile device vendors and chipset companies."

EU Digital Agenda: Telecoms Services Improving

The European Commission issued a 46 page report summarizing regulatory changes and key market trends in the EU telecom sector over the past year. In general, the report finds that the telecom market is improving from the consumer perspective with 95% of Europeans now having access to a fixed broadband connection, while the use of mobile internet has gone up by 62%. On the mobile side, the average revenue per user (ARPU) dropped in many EU countries with the average EU level decreasing from €244 in 2009 to €221 in 2010 thanks in part to lower termination rates.



During 2011, a significant amount of radio spectrum was freed up, including: Belgium, Lithuania, Slovenia, Greece, Malta, Spain and Portugal opened up the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands ("GSM bands") to new mobile services, while the 800 MHz band was assigned to mobile broadband in Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Sweden.



However, the report observes that the current EU regulatory framework has been applied unevenly. To date, four countries (Belgium, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia) have not yet transposed the EU telecom rules which were agreed in 2009 into their national legislation. These rule cover mobile number portability, consumer protection against phone theft and opening the market to competition. http://www.europa.eu

Infonetics Predicts Uptick in Telco CAPEX

Infonetics is predicting an uptick in telecom CAPEX this year driven by mobile network modernization, especially in Asia.




Some highlights:

  • Global telecom carrier capex grew 3% to $301 billion in 2011 from 2010

  • Spending on every type of network equipment grew in 2011, with the exception of TDM voice, which continued its steep decline

  • Asia Pacific was again the largest telecom carrier capex region, followed by EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa)

  • Infonetics expects worldwide capex to spike in 2012, then level out in 2015 and 2016 at around the US$345 billion mark

  • Wireless operators’ share of capex is forecast to grow from a quarter to nearly a third of global capex between 2012 and 2016, as the world continues to go mobile

  • Telecom service provider revenue grew 6% to $1.8 trillion worldwide in 2011 over 2010

  • Operators in Asia Pacific and EMEA are the largest revenue generators, each region with about a third of global revenue.


“We’re expecting a telecom capex hike in 2012 as operators around the world ramp their spending like crazy to launch LTE networks, modernize their mobile networks, and carry out national wireline broadband initiatives. Téral adds: “High demand everywhere for telecom services, particularly mobile broadband, is fueling the latest investment cycle. The key capex contributors in 2012 will be Clearwire, Sprint, and T-Mobile USA in the US; NTT DoCoMo and Softbank Mobile in Japan; and KT, LGU+, and SK telecom in South Korea. China recently revealed a US$58 billion economic stimulus package to fund a fresh round of investment in telecom infrastructure. Meanwhile, Europe's Big 5 have increased capital intensity by 2 percentage points for the first time in 5 years, right in the middle of the critical economic downturn! As for Latin America, operators already spiked, with capex there up 25% in 2011, led by América Móvil and Telefónica.�?

Qualcomm Acquires Summit for Programmable Battery Charging Chips

Qualcomm has acquired Summit Microelectronics (Summit), a leading developer and provider of programmable power integrated circuits, for an undisclosed sum.



Summit, which is based in Sunnyvale, California, offers non-volatile mixed-signal IC technology combined with a GUI development environment for addressing common power problems such as dynamic voltage/current control and intelligent battery charging. Summit's fast charging solutions are found in a variety of leading mobile phones, tablets, and e-readers. The company was founded in 1997 and has about 50 employees.



All employees of Summit Microelectronics have joined Qualcomm's CDMA Technologies division.



The demand for more sophisticated battery management is critical in a world of increasingly smart devices with advanced computing capabilities, large high-resolution screens, and advanced modem technologies (e.g. 4G LTE).

Verizon Launches "Quantum" FiOS Speeds

Verizon has begun marketing its fastest-ever residential FiOS Internet service. The new FiOS Internet tiers containing the highest speeds are named FiOS Quantum and feature speeds of 50/25, 75/35, 150/65 and 300/65 megabits per second (Mbps). Three of those speeds �� 75/35, 150/65 and 300/65 -- are twice as fast as those previously offered. In addition, Verizon will continue to offer its entry-level speed of 15/5 Mbps.



Verizon noted that while the majority of existing FiOS customers will pay $10 to $15 more per month to double or triple their Internet speed, they may be able to adjust their FiOS TV tiers as desired and pay roughly the same monthly total that they pay now. http://www.verizon.com

ZTE Shows 400G/1T DWDM

ZTE unveiled a 400G/1T DWDM multi-application network device prototype at the 16th WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking Forum in Monaco. The 400G/1T DWDM prototype uses a multi-subcarrier Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology for ultra-long-haul applications. It also is a 16 quadrature amplitude modulation solution for metro and local applications. ZTE said it is also supporting a Nyquist WDM solution for long-haul applications.



ZTE’s 100G DWDM/ optical transport network (OTN) system supports C-band 80-wavelength applications, standard PM-QPSK code pattern adjustment and coherent detection. ZTE has implemented advanced soft decision forward error correction technology. http://www.zte.com.cn

Intel to Acquire Wi-Fi, 3G and LTE Patents from InterDigital

Intel will acquire approximately wireless 1,700 patents and patent applications from InterDigital for $375 million in cash. The patents are primarily related to 3G, LTE and 802.11 technologies.



InterDigital is an active developer of advanced wireless technologies including WCDMA, HSDPA and HSUPA3G technologies as well as LTE and LTE-Advanced.

The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) has selected ADVA Optical Networking's 100G Metro solution as a key part of a new core network connecting locations throughout Amsterdam. The new 100G Metro solution, based on the ADVA FSP 3000 platform, will double AMS-IX's current network capacity.



The ADVA FSP 3000 uses direct detection 4x28G technology for delivering 100Gbps data transport across distances of up to 500km.

Samsung SDS Deploys Optical Mesh with Ciena

Samsung SDS, a global information and communications technology service provider, has deployed Ciena’s full portfolio of intelligent Packet-Optical Switching, Packet-Optical Transport, Carrier Ethernet (CES) and ON-Center Management Suite solutions to create its own private optical mesh network connecting multiple locations globally. The intelligent optical mesh, which replaces aging ATM and MPLS-based equipment, automatically routes traffic around network issues to maximize availability with the lowest level of latency.



The optical mesh leverages Ciena’s OneConnect Intelligent Control Plane and its CoreDirector Multiservice Optical Switch to ensure network capacity in the event of disruptive network failures such as one or multiple and simultaneous fiber cuts. Based on a mesh design, protection is shared across multiple “working�? routes using state-of-the-art restoration technology that can dynamically reroute services around failures using available bandwidth anywhere in the network. This intelligent network is also aware and proactive of all parameters that can impact the performance of applications, including being able to route to ensure low latency, and route around shared risk link group and many others.

ZTE unveiled a 400G/1T DWDM multi-application network device prototype at the 16th WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking Forum in Monaco. The 400G/1T DWDM prototype uses a multi-subcarrier Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology for ultra-long-haul applications. It also is a 16 quadrature amplitude modulation solution for metro and local applications. ZTE said it is also supporting a Nyquist WDM solution for long-haul applications.



ZTE’s 100G DWDM/ optical transport network (OTN) system supports C-band 80-wavelength applications, standard PM-QPSK code pattern adjustment and coherent detection. ZTE has implemented advanced soft decision forward error correction technology. http://www.zte.com.cn

Intel to Acquire Wi-Fi, 3G and LTE Patents from InterDigital

Intel will acquire approximately wireless 1,700 patents and patent applications from InterDigital for $375 million in cash. The patents are primarily related to 3G, LTE and 802.11 technologies.



InterDigital is an active developer of advanced wireless technologies including WCDMA, HSDPA and HSUPA3G technologies as well as LTE and LTE-Advanced.
