Charter Communications named Thomas M. Rutledge as President and Chief Executive Officer, replacing Michael J. Lovett, who announced in October his plan to step down as President and Chief Executive Officer of Charter on the earlier of April 30, 2012 or when a successor was appointed. Rutledge joins Charter from Cablevision Systems, where he served as Chief Operating Officer from April 2004 until December 2011. He began his career in 1977 at American Television and Communications (ATC), a predecessor company of Time Warner Cable. Mr. Rutledge currently serves on the board of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA), and served as Chairman of the NCTA from 2008-2010.

Level 3 will provide IP capacity for the Central Valley Next Generation Broadband Infrastructure project, a $66.6 million total cost project that is being partly funded with $46.6 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The project will bring advanced communications to rural, underserved areas by creating a 1,300 mile, high-capacity fiber-based infrastructure throughout 18 counties in California's Central Valley. Level 3 is providing over 300 route miles of fiber for the project. 



CenturyLink won a multi-year contract valued at more than $250 million from the Defense Information Systems Agency/Defense Information Technology Contracting Organization (DISA/DITCO) to provide private line services for dedicated high-speed connections between military installations. Under the terms of the 5-year order by DISA/DITCO, CenturyLink Government will provide private line services to the DOD as it migrates to Networx, the largest global communications contract program ever developed for the federal government by the U.S. General Services Administration. CenturyLink Government will provide private line services to all DOD agencies, including the Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy.
